牛観察の徹底と効率化

記者「今村さんの牧場で、技術的なこだわりについて教えてください。」

今村さん「技術的なこだわりというよりも、特に注意して力を入れているのは牛の観察です。私たちの牧場では13か所にカメラを設置しており、毎日朝と夕方に録画をチェックしています。実際に自分の足で牧場を見回ることもしますが、それに加えてカメラチェックを重視しています。1日あたりトータルで約30分、カメラの画面を確認しています。特に発情のチェックでは、録画を早送りして確認することで、効率よく発情を発見できるようにしています。」

記者「1日30分のカメラチェックということですが、具体的にどのようなタイミングで行っていますか？」

今村さん「朝15分、夕方15分を目安にチェックしています。また、休憩時間もカメラが見える位置にいるので、その時も観察しています。このようにして時間を短縮しつつ、録画チェックで効率的に牛の発情や健康状態を確認しています。例えば、夜間の発情を確認したい場合は、録画を1時間おきに飛ばしてチェックすることで、長時間の録画を数秒で確認できるようにしています。」


記者「効率的にカメラを活用しているんですね。他にこだわりのポイントはありますか？」

今村さん「最近、自分で受精卵移植を行うようになりました。3年前に免許を取得し、最初はうまくいかず一度諦めましたが、再び挑戦しています。自分で移植することでコストを削減し、経済的に厳しい状況でも牧場経営を続けられるようにしています。今年から再開し、年間200万円以上のコスト削減を目指しています。これにより、経済的な負担を減らしつつ、牧場の持続可能性を高めることを目標としています。」


記者「受精卵移植は専門的な作業ですね。具体的な方法や工夫について教えていただけますか？」

今村さん「最近、カラードプラ機能付きの超音波診断装置を導入しました。これにより、卵巣の黄体サイズだけでなく、黄体の血流も確認できるようになりました。以前は黄体の大きさで判断していましたが、カラードプラ機能を使うことで、より正確に機能的な黄体かを把握することができます。導入して間もないので、効果はまだ確認中ですが、これにより、無駄な受精卵の使用を回避できるとともに、移植の成功率を向上させることができると考えています。」

Reporter: "Please tell us about the technical aspects of your farm."

Imamura: "Rather than being technically particular, what I pay particular attention to is observing the cows. We have cameras installed in 13 places on our farm, and we check the recordings every morning and evening. We walk around the farm on foot, but we also place importance on checking the cameras. We check the camera screens for a total of about 30 minutes per day. When checking for estrus, we fast-forward the recordings and check them so that we can efficiently detect estrus."


Reporter: "You say you check the cameras for 30 minutes a day, but when exactly do you do it?"

Imamura: "We check them for 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening. We also observe during breaks, as we are in a position where we can see the cameras. In this way, we can shorten the time and efficiently check the cows' estrus and health by checking the recordings. For example, if we want to check for estrus at night, we skip the recordings and check them every hour, so we can check long recordings in just a few seconds."


Reporter: "So you use the cameras efficiently. Are there any other points you are particular about? ”

Imamura: “Recently, I have started to perform embryo transfer myself. I got the license three years ago, but it didn’t work out at first, so I gave up, but I’m trying again. By doing the transfer myself, I can reduce costs and continue to run the farm even in economically difficult situations. I started again this year, and aim to reduce costs by more than 2 million yen per year. By doing this, I aim to reduce the economic burden while increasing the sustainability of the farm.”


Reporter: “Embryonic transfer is a specialized task. Can you tell me about the specific method and ingenuity?”

Imamura: “Recently, we have introduced an ultrasound diagnostic device with a color Doppler function. This allows us to check not only the size of the corpus luteum in the ovary, but also the blood flow of the corpus luteum. Previously, we judged it by the size of the corpus luteum, but by using the color Doppler function, we can more accurately determine whether the corpus luteum is functional. We have only just introduced it, so we are still checking the effectiveness, but we believe that this will prevent the use of unnecessary fertilized eggs and improve the success rate of transfer.”

牛の管理に妥協なし！

記者「自分の牛の状態に点数をつけるなら何点ですか。」

今村さん「はい、70点ですね。良い点としては、子牛の病気に関してはよく観察することで早期発見できて対処できていることが挙げられます。また、飼料を十分に与え、子牛がしっかりと食べていることも重要なポイントです。これにより市場では平均以上の成果を上げることができています。また、親牛に関しても、カメラを使った観察で、発情や病気の早期発見ができています。これらの努力が実を結び、全体的には良好な状態を保つことができています。」

記者「その70点を改善するためにはどのような改善点がありますか。」

今村さん「子牛に関しては、生まれてから3か月までの間に、消毒や環境の改善などでさらに手を加える余地があります。また、親に付けている子牛の飲みが悪い場合に、追加哺乳するなどして、早期に対処することも必要です。これにより、子牛の健康状態や増体をさらに向上させることができます。親牛に関しては、年１産できるかどうかが課題です。農場の状況を確認してみたら平均分娩間隔が１２ヶ月を超えていました。大きな要因は母牛の約半数を占める借腹交雑牛にあるとわかりました。こちらは、人工授精ではなく受精卵移植により、牛を妊娠させるため、今年は受精卵移植に力を入れて、年１産を目指しています。また、添加剤等を活用し、必要な栄養素を徹底して与えることで、受胎率を向上させたいと考えています。」


記者「おすすめのアイテムや道具があれば教えてください。」

今村さん「そうですね。発熱の早期発見にも役立っています。体温が極端に高くなると通知が来るので、それを見て早めに対処することができるようになりました。以前は見逃していたような問題にも気づくことができ、牛の健康管理が大幅に改善されました。」

Imamura: "Yes, 70 points. The good points are that by observing the calves closely, we are able to detect and deal with illnesses early on. It is also important that the calves are given sufficient feed and eat well. This has enabled us to achieve above-average results at the market. We are also able to observe the parent cows with cameras, which allows us to detect estrus and illnesses early on. These efforts have borne fruit, and we are able to maintain good overall condition."

Reporter: "What improvements can be made to improve that 70 points?"

Imamura: "As for calves, there is still room for further intervention in the first three months after birth, such as disinfection and improving the environment. Also, if a calf attached to its mother is not drinking well, it is necessary to address this early, such as by providing additional milk. This will further improve the health and weight gain of the calves. As for the parent cows, the challenge is whether they can give birth once a year. When we checked the situation on the farm, we found that the average calving interval was over 12 months. We found that the main reason for this was the borrowed litters of crossbred cows, which make up about half of the mother cows. These cows are impregnated by embryo transfer rather than artificial insemination, so this year We are focusing on embryo transfer and aiming for one birth per year. We also want to improve the conception rate by thoroughly providing the necessary nutrients using additives, etc. ”


Reporter: “Please tell us if you have any recommended items or tools.”

PDCAを回して結果を出す

記者「新規就農者の方へのメッセージをお願いします。」

今村さん「最初、新規就農するときは気合が入っていると思います。私もそうでした。でも、あまり気合を入れすぎると、いつまでも働けてしまう仕事ですから、自分の体調を見ながら無理せず、オンとオフの切り替えを持つことが大切です。自分のペースを守り、長く続けられるように心がけてください。」

記者「勤めを経験しているからこそのアドバイスですね。他に重要なポイントはありますか？」

今村さん「あとは、作業に集中しすぎず、全体を見渡すことも大事です。作業に没頭すると事故の危険もあります。例えば、子牛が生まれたときに親牛から攻撃を受けそうになったり、牛舎の補修作業で怪我をしたりした経験があります。全体を見渡して、怪我や事故を防ぐことが大切です。」


記者「座右の銘を教えてください。」

今村さん「『結果が全て』です。これは自衛隊にいた頃の上司から受け継いだ言葉です。その上司は非常に厳しい方で、訓練の際に常にこの言葉を強調していました。当時は受け入れがたかったのですが、訓練に真剣に取り組むうちに、結果にフォーカスすることの重要性に気づきました。また、結果にフォーカスすると、プロセスの質も向上するということを実感しました。」


記者「その結果を振り返ることの大切さに気づかれたんですね。」

今村さん「そうですね。自分でやっている仕事なので、いろいろ試す機会がありますが、試しただけでなく、結果をしっかり振り返ることが重要です。無駄なコストや労力を避けるためにも、結果を見て、良ければ継続し、悪ければ改善するという循環が大事です。自衛隊で学んだPDCAサイクルが、今の仕事にも活きています。」


記者「自衛隊での経験が今の仕事にも役立っているんですね。」

今村さん「はい。自衛隊の上司から『どこに行っても仕事のやり方は一緒だ』という言葉もいただきました。この言葉に背中を押され、新しい環境でも結果を出すために頑張っています。結果を重視し、PDCAサイクルを回し続けることで、どんな仕事でも成功できると思っています。」

Imamura: “When you first start farming, you’re probably full of enthusiasm. I was too. But if you’re too enthusiastic, you’ll end up working forever, so it’s important to watch your physical condition and not push yourself too hard, and to be able to switch between on and off. Keep your own pace and try to keep going for a long time.”


Reporter: “That’s advice you can only get from someone who has worked. Are there any other important points?”

Imamura: “Also, it’s important not to concentrate too much on your work, but to keep an eye on the whole picture. If you get too absorbed in your work, there’s a risk of accidents. For example, when a calf was born, I was almost attacked by the mother cow, and I was injured while repairing the cowshed. It’s important to keep an eye on the whole picture and prevent injuries and accidents.”


Reporter: “What is your motto?”

Imamura: “‘Results are everything.’ This is a phrase I inherited from my boss when I was in the Self-Defense Forces. My boss was very strict, and he always emphasized this phrase during training. It was hard to accept at the time, but after training, As I worked on it seriously, I realized the importance of focusing on results. I also realized that focusing on results improves the quality of the process. ”


Reporter: “So you realized the importance of reflecting on the results.”

Imamura: “That’s right. Since it’s my own job, I have the opportunity to try various things, but it’s important not only to try them out, but also to reflect on the results carefully. In order to avoid unnecessary costs and effort, it’s important to look at the results, continue if they’re good, and improve if they’re bad. The PDCA cycle I learned in the Self-Defense Forces is also useful in my current job.”

Imamura: “Yes. My boss in the Self-Defense Forces told me, ‘The way you work is the same no matter where you go.’ This encourages me, and I’m working hard to produce results in my new environment. I believe that by focusing on results and continuing the PDCA cycle, I can succeed in any job.”
