肥育から一貫農家への転向

記者「竹内さんの就農のきっかけを教えてください。」

竹内さん「就農のきっかけは、幼少期からずっと牛と一緒に過ごしていたことです。実は、小学校から高校までは逆に牛飼いにはなりたくないと思っていたんです。しかし、大学に進学した頃に、実家が牛を飼っていることもあって、家業を継がなければならないという気持ちが強くなりました。また、収入面でも安定しており、将来的に家庭を守ることができると考えて、就農を決意しました。」


記者「なるほど。肥育農家から一貫農家に変わられたと思いますが、一貫経営に取り組まれたきっかけは何でしょうか？」

竹内さん「一貫経営に取り組んだ理由の一つは、若かったこともありますが、その時期に繁殖牛の価格が非常に高かったことが大きな要因です。これはチャンスだと思い、思い切って繁殖にも手を出しました。繁殖牛を自分で育てることで、コストを抑えながら収益を上げられると考えました。」


記者「経営的な部分で将来の見通しも考えて、繁殖にも取り組まれたということですね？」

竹内さん「はい、そうです。繁殖と肥育の両方を手掛けることで、どんな状況になっても強みを持てると考えました。自分で育てた牛を肥育まで行うことで、経営の安定性を高められると思っています。これからの農業経営において、多角的に取り組むことが重要だと感じました。」

記者「確かに、最近では繁殖と肥育の両方を行う農家が増えていますね。」

竹内さん「そうですね。繁殖と肥育の両方を行うことで、技術的にも経営的にも自分の価値を高めることができます。それにより、経営の幅が広がり、安定した収入を得ることができます。これからもこのスタイルで頑張っていきたいと思います。」

Reporter: "What made you decide to become a farmer?"

Takeuchi: "My reason for becoming a farmer was that I had always been with cows since I was a child. In fact, from elementary school to high school, I didn't want to become a cowherd. But when I went to university, my parents kept cows, and I felt a strong need to take over the family business. I also thought that the income was stable and I would be able to take care of my family in the future, so I decided to become a farmer."


Reporter: "I see. I believe you went from being a fattening farmer to being a full-scale farmer. What prompted you to take on the full-scale management? What was the gamble?"

Takeuchi: "One of the reasons I decided to try integrated management was that I was young, but the main reason was that the price of breeding cattle was very high at the time. I thought this was an opportunity, so I took the plunge and tried breeding. I thought that by raising the breeding cattle myself, I could increase profits while keeping costs down."


Reporter: "So you started breeding with the future outlook in mind from a management perspective?"

Takeuchi: "Yes, that's right. I thought that by doing both breeding and fattening, I would have an advantage no matter what the situation. I raised the cattle myself. I think that by raising cattle up to fattening, we can increase the stability of our business. I feel that it is important to approach agricultural management from various angles in the future. ”

Reporter: “Indeed, there are more and more farmers who do both breeding and fattening these days.”

Takeuchi: “That’s right. By doing both breeding and fattening, you can increase your value both technically and in terms of business. This will broaden the scope of your business and give you a stable income. I would like to continue working hard in this style.”

竹内牧場の牛育て奮闘記

記者「自分の牛の状態に点数をつけるなら何点でしょうか？」

竹内さん「50点くらいでしょうか。理由としては、繁殖を始めたばかりなので、まだ経験が浅いです。周りからは若手と言われますが、それでも『いい牛だね』と言ってもらえることもあれば、まだまだだと感じることもあります。値段面でもまだ満足いく結果が出せていません。今の状態では、繁殖と肥育のどちらもまだ成長の余地が多いと感じているので、50点としました。」

記者「その50点を100点に近づけるためにどのようなことをしていきたいと考えていますか？」

竹内さん「まずは飼料の改良ですね。今使っている粗飼料と濃厚飼料の比率を見直し、与える量を調整していきたいと思います。具体的に言うなら、牛一頭一頭に対して適切な比率を考えることが大切です。牛によって食べる量が違いますので、それぞれに合った飼料を与えることで、健康な牛を育てたいと考えています。」


記者「購入飼料を使用されている理由は何ですか？」

竹内さん「家族経営なので時間がないというのが大きな理由です。自分たちの労働時間を考慮して、購入飼料を使うことで効率よく仕事ができるようにしています。原価は高くなりますが、その分、時間と労力を節約できるので、この方法を選んでいます。」


記者「おすすめのアイテムや道具があれば教えてください。」

竹内さん「牛舎ですね。特に肥育用と繁殖用で牛舎を分けることが重要です。繁殖牛舎では、作業効率を上げるために高さや幅に気を付けました。他の牧場を見学して、いいところを取り入れつつ、自分たちの環境に合った設計にしました。例えば、親と子牛が一緒にいると怪我するリスクがあるので、子牛だけが入れる扉を作ったりしています。」

Reporter: “If you had to rate the condition of your cattle, how many points would you give them?”

Takeuchi: “About 50 points. The reason is that I have just started breeding, so I am still inexperienced. People around me say I am young, but even so, sometimes they say, ‘These are good cattle,’ and sometimes I feel that there is still a long way to go. I have not yet achieved satisfactory results in terms of price. As of now, I feel that there is still a lot of room for growth in both breeding and fattening, so I gave it 50 points.”

Reporter: “What do you want to do to get closer to 100 points from 50 points?”

Takeuchi: “First of all, I would like to improve the feed. I would like to review the ratio of roughage and concentrated feed we are currently using and adjust the amount we give them. To be more specific, it is important to consider the appropriate ratio for each cow. Since each cow eats different amounts, we want to raise healthy cows by giving them feed that suits each cow.


Reporter: "Why do you use purchased feed?"

Takeuchi: "The main reason is that we are a family-run business and we don't have much time. By using purchased feed, we can work more efficiently, taking into account our working hours. Although the cost is higher, we choose this method because it saves us time and effort."


Reporter: "Please tell us if you have any recommended items or tools."

Takeuchi: "The cowshed. It is especially important to separate the cowshed for fattening and the one for breeding. In the breeding cowshed, we paid attention to the height and width to increase work efficiency. When I looked at other farms, We learned from them, incorporated their good points, and designed it to suit our environment. For example, there is a risk of injury if mothers and calves are together, so we made a door that only calves can enter.

逃げずに頑張る

記者「座右の銘は何ですか？また、それが大事だと思う理由を教えてください。」

竹内さん「座右の銘は『逃げずに頑張る』です。逃げるのは簡単だと思うんです。特に今の畜産業は不景気で、厳しい状況が続いています。でも、その状況にどう立ち向かうかが重要だと思っています。逃げずに頑張っていけば、後々きっと良いことが訪れると信じています。だからこそ、この言葉を大事にしているんです。」


記者「確かに、不景気の中で赤字になるリスクは昔に比べて高いですもんね。」

竹内さん「そうなんです。その中でどうやって黒字にしていくかが課題です。でも、諦めずに努力を続ければ、必ず結果はついてくると思っています。やめなければ、逃げなければ、道は開けると信じています。」


記者「最初は牛飼いをしようと思っていなかったのに、今こうして牛を飼っていることについてどう思いますか？」

竹内さん「いざやってみたら、やりがいがあると感じています。もう7年になりますが、もっと早くから継ぐために勉強していれば良かったなと思うこともあります。ただ、今はこの仕事に誇りを持っていますし、収益を上げるために努力することにやりがいを感じています。」


記者「畜産のやりがいとは、具体的にどんな点にありますか？」

竹内さん「やはり、良い成績が出たときです。自分が理想とする牛が育った時に非常に大きなやりがいを感じます。例えば、理想的な体型や健康状態の牛が育ち、その牛が市場で高評価を受けた時の達成感は何にも代えがたいものです。」

Reporter: "What is your motto? Also, please tell us why you think it is important."

Takeuchi: "My motto is 'Don't run away, just do your best.' I think it's easy to run away. Especially in the livestock industry right now, the economy is in a slump and the situation is tough. But I think it's important how you face that situation. If you don't run away, but do your best, I believe that if you do, good things will come your way. That's why I treasure these words."


Reporter: "It's true that the risk of going into the red in a recession is higher than it was in the past."

Takeuchi: "That's true. The challenge is how to turn a profit in that environment. But I believe that if you don't give up and keep trying, you'll definitely see results. I believe that if you don't quit, if you don't run away, a path will open up."


Reporter: "At first you didn't want to be a cattle farmer, so how do you feel about being a cattle farmer now?"

Takeuchi: "When I tried it, I feel it is rewarding. It's been seven years already, and sometimes I wish I had started studying earlier to take over. But now I'm proud of my work, and I feel rewarded by working hard to increase profits.


Reporter: "What do you find rewarding about livestock farming?"

Takeuchi: "It's when we get good results. I feel very rewarded when I raise the cows I want. For example, when I raise a cow with the perfect body shape and health, and it is highly rated in the market, the sense of accomplishment is irreplaceable."

竹内牧場の牛舎は作業効率を重視して設計されています。見学した牧場の良い点を取り入れつつ、環境にあった形で設計をしているそうです。親牛と子牛を分けるための扉を設置し、怪我のリスクを軽減しています。
