牛の足元から見る世界

記者「祥子さんが削蹄師を目指そうと思ったきっかけは何ですか？」

祥子さん「実は、以前JAに勤めていた時、削蹄の仕事を初めて目の当たりにしました。そこでプロフェッショナルな方々と働く機会があり、その刺激的な経験から自分も挑戦してみたいと強く感じるようになりました。女性としての壁や限界を言われることもありましたが、できないならできるようになろうと決意。夫の支持も得て、資格取得のために勉強を始めました。」


記者「祥子さんの旦那様である侑紀さんも削蹄師として活動されていると聞きましたが、その影響は大きかったですか？」

祥子さん「はい、夫はもう10年以上削蹄師として活動していて、彼の働く姿から多大な影響を受けました。肉体労働の厳しさや、それに立ち向かう精神力を間近で見て、私もやれるかもしれないと思い始めたんです。夫の支えがあったからこそ、挑戦する勇気が持てました。」


記者「女性としての挑戦にはどのような困難がありましたか？」

祥子さん「確かに物理的な強さや、社会的な偏見といった障壁は存在します。しかし、私は幼少期から負けず嫌いで、できないと言われると余計にやりたくなる性格なんです。だから、できないことがあれば、できるようになるまで挑戦する。知らなければ勉強する。その精神で今まで乗り越えてきました。」


記者「削蹄師としての今後の目標は何ですか？」

祥子さん「まだ修行中の身で、完璧ではないですが、できるところまでチャレンジしてみたいと思っています。削蹄師としての技術を磨きながら、女性でもこの道で成功できることを証明したい。そして、いつかは安全で効率的な削蹄ができるような環境を自分たちで整えられたらと考えています。」

Reporter: "What made you want to become a hoof trimmer?"

Shoko: "Actually, when I was working at JA, I first saw hoof trimming work. There, I had the opportunity to work with professionals, and that exciting experience made me feel strongly that I wanted to try it myself. I was told that there were barriers and limitations as a woman, but I decided that if I couldn't do it, I would become one. With my husband's support, I started studying to get the qualifications."

Reporter: "I heard that your husband, Yuki, is also a hoof trimmer. Did he have a big influence on you?"

Shoko: "Yes, my husband has been working as a hoof trimmer for over 10 years, and I was greatly influenced by watching him work. Seeing up close the harshness of physical labor and the mental strength it takes to face it, I began to think that maybe I could do it too. My husband I had the courage to take on the challenge because of the support of my parents."

Reporter: "What difficulties did you face in taking on the challenge as a woman?"

Shoko: "It's true that there are barriers such as physical strength and social prejudice. However, I've been competitive since I was a child, and when I'm told I can't do something, I want to do it even more. So if there's something I can't do, I'll try until I can. If I don't know, I'll study. With that spirit, I've overcome so far."

Reporter: "What are your future goals as a hoof trimmer?"

Shoko: "I'm still in training, and I'm not perfect, but I want to challenge myself as much as I can. I want to prove that women can succeed in this field while honing my skills as a hoof trimmer. And I hope that one day we can create an environment where hoof trimming can be done safely and efficiently."

記者「削蹄師とは具体的にどのような仕事をするのですか？」

祥子さん「削蹄師とは、牛の足、つまり爪のケアを専門とする職人のことです。牛が快適に歩けるよう、爪を整えたり、必要に応じてグラインダーで削るなどして、牛の最適な爪の状態を実現します。よく言われるのが削蹄師とは牛のネイリストで、牛の体重が重いため、爪の健康は牛自体の健康に直結しています。年に1回から2回のケアで牛の状態を大きく改善できる、非常に重要な仕事です。」

記者「削蹄師の仕事の重要性についてもう少し教えてください。」

祥子さん「牛の足は、その重量を支える重要な役割を担っており、『第二の心臓』とも称されるほどです。爪の状態一つで牛の健康状態が大きく左右されるため、私たちの仕事は牛の命を守る上で非常に重要です。経験に基づき、どのように爪を切るかを決定し、牛が心地良く過ごせるように細心の注意を払います。」


記者「削蹄師の数はどれくらいいるのですか？」

祥子さん「私の地域では削蹄師会に15名ほどが在籍していますが、全国的に見てもプロとして活動する削蹄師は決して多くはありません。農家自身で削蹄される場合も多いですが、削蹄には専門的な知識と技術が求められるため、プロに依頼する価値は非常に大きいのです。」


記者「プロに依頼するのはどのような時ですか？」

祥子さん「牛の爪は一頭一頭異なり、正確な判断が求められます。素人でも削蹄することは可能ですが、その後どのように爪が伸びていくのか？、どのような負荷がかかっていくのか？まで予測することはできません。ですがプロが削蹄すると、経験豊富な削蹄師ならではの判断で、牛が心地よく感じる最適な爪の状態を実現できるのです。短期的には費用がかかるかもしれませんが、長期的に見れば牛に足周りからのストレスを与えず健康を保ち、生産性を高めることができるため、欠かせない投資だと考えています。」

Shoko: "A hoof trimmer is a craftsman who specializes in caring for the feet, or claws, of cows. They trim the claws and grind them down as necessary to ensure that the cows can walk comfortably, achieving the optimal condition of the cows' claws. A hoof trimmer is often referred to as a manicurist for cows, and because cows are heavy, the health of their claws is directly linked to the health of the cow itself. It is a very important job that can greatly improve the condition of the cows by caring for them once or twice a year."

Reporter: "Please tell me more about the importance of the hoof trimmer's work."

Shoko: "A cow's feet play an important role in supporting its weight, and are even called the 'second heart.' The condition of the claws greatly affects the cow's health, so our work is very important in protecting the cows' lives. Based on our experience, we decide how to cut the claws and take great care to ensure that the cows are comfortable."

Reporter: "How many hoof trimmers are there?" How many are there?"

Shoko: "In my area, there are about 15 people in the hoof trimmers' association, but there are not many professional hoof trimmers nationwide. Farmers often trim their hooves themselves, but because hoof trimming requires specialized knowledge and skills, it is very valuable to ask a professional."

Reporter: "When do you ask a professional?"

Shoko: "Each cow's claws are different, so accurate judgment is required. Even an amateur can trim the hooves, but it is impossible to predict how the claws will grow after that, or what kind of stress they will be subjected to. However, when a professional trims the hooves, they can make the judgment of an experienced hoof trimmer to achieve the optimal condition of the claws that the cow feels comfortable in. It may be expensive in the short term, but in the long term, it is an essential investment because it prevents stress on the cow's feet, keeps the cow healthy, and increases productivity."

笑顔で切り拓く未来

記者「削蹄師に必要なおすすめの道具とその特徴について教えてください。」

祥子さん「あまり知られてない道具としては『括削刀（かっさくとう）』という道具が挙げられます。これは、爪の病気治療に使われる細いかぎ爪の形をした道具で、耳かきに似た形をしています。爪の中にたまった膿を除去する作業に使うのですが、この道具を使って正確に膿を取り除くことで、牛の足の健康を保つことができます。非常に特殊な道具ですが、削蹄師にとっては欠かせないものの一つです。削蹄師は刃物の手入れが非常に重要で、切れ味を維持するために砥石での研ぎ作業が欠かせません。砥石で研ぐ際は、粒度を変えて段階的に行い、最終的には細かい粒度で仕上げることで切れ味を保ちます。このプロセスは技術と経験が要求されるため、削蹄師として日々勉強し続けています。」

記者「牛の爪を扱う上での困難はありますか？」

祥子さん「牛の爪は、その硬さが異なり、牛舎の環境によっても大きく変わります。例えば、床が乾燥している場所にいる牛は爪が硬く、濡れた環境にいる牛は爪が柔らかくなります。硬い爪を扱う際は、バーナーで熱して柔らかくする必要があることもあります。このように、爪の状態を見極めて、適切な道具を選んで使用する技術が求められるのです。」


記者「尊敬する人物はいらっしゃいますか？」

祥子さん「はい、私の夫であり、削蹄師でもある侑紀さんです。彼は牛に対する深い愛情と、仕事における真面目さで私をいつも支えてくれます。技術的な面だけでなく、牛を心から理解しようとする姿勢が、私が尊敬するところです。彼のように牛の健康を第一に考え、日々技術を磨き続けることが私の目標です。」


記者「座右の銘はありますか？」

祥子さん「私の座右の銘は、「笑っているやつが一番強い！」です。仕事でも日常生活でも、どんなに厳しい状況にあっても、笑顔を忘れずに前向きに取り組むことで、意外にも困難を乗り越えられると信じています。現在、経済的な厳しさもありますが、夫と二人で新たな挑戦を探しながら、笑顔を絶やさずに乗り越えていきたいと思っています。」

Shoko: "One tool that is not well known is a tool called a "claw cutter." This is a thin, claw-shaped tool used to treat nail diseases, and is shaped like an ear pick. It is used to remove pus that has accumulated in the nail, and by using this tool to accurately remove the pus, the health of the cow's feet can be maintained. It is a very specialized tool, but it is one of the essentials for a hoof trimmer. Hoof trimmers need to take great care of their blades, and sharpening them with a whetstone is essential to maintain their sharpness. When sharpening with a whetstone, the blade is sharpened in stages with different grit sizes, and the blade is sharpened by finishing with a finer grit size. This process requires skill and experience, so as a hoof trimmer, I continue to study it every day."

Reporter: "Are there any difficulties in handling cow's claws?"

Shoko: "The hardness of cow claws varies, and it also changes greatly depending on the environment of the cowshed. For example, cows in a place with a dry floor have hard claws, while cows in a wet environment have soft claws. When handling hard claws, it may be necessary to heat them with a burner to soften them. In this way, it is necessary to determine the condition of the claws and select and use the appropriate tools."

Reporter: "Is there anyone you respect?"

Shoko: "Yes, my husband, Yuki, who is also a hoof trimmer. He always supports me with his deep love for cows and his seriousness in his work. I respect not only his technical skills, but also his attitude of trying to understand cows from the bottom of his heart. My goal is to put the health of the cows first like him and continue to hone my skills every day."

Reporter: "Do you have a motto?"

Shoko: "My motto is, 'The one who smiles is the strongest!' I believe that no matter how tough the situation is, whether at work or in daily life, by always smiling and approaching it positively, you can unexpectedly overcome difficulties. Although we are currently facing financial difficulties, my husband and I are looking for new challenges and hope to overcome them with a smile on our faces.
