土と汗の中で育む命

記者「北里さんの牛の育て方の工夫やこだわりについて教えてください。」

北里さん「ええ、私たちの育て方には確かに特別な工夫があります。一番大事なのは、餌の与え方ですね。うちでは、子牛を親に付けていて母乳で育てるんですが、母乳の栄養は時間が経つとどんどんなくなっていくんですよね。ということは栄養の摂取は餌からになってきます。小さな頃からしっかりと餌を食べさせ、早期に栄養をたっぷりと摂取させます。これによって、牛たちは健康的に、そして迅速に成長します。早めに餌を与え始めれば乳離れも抵抗がないように感じています。」

記者「その餌を与えるタイミングや方法についてもう少し詳しく教えていただけますか？」

北里さん「親付けで飼育する農家では通常は3ヶ月くらい親に付けるのですが、うちでは生後70日程度で親から離し餌を与えます。その切り替えがうまくいくように生後20日くらいから昼だけ親から離したりして親離れの抵抗をなくしています。うちではこのやり方は牛たちの成長を加速させる秘訣の一つですね。また、天候や季節の変化に敏感になり早期発見することで、牛たちが健康を保つよう細心の注意を払っています。」


記者「では、北里さんの牧場に点数をつけるとしたら、どのように評価しますか？」

北里さん「正直に言えば50点くらいでしょうか。理由としては、牛たちが健康に成長しているという点で高評価です。しかし、育成の過程で常に完璧とは言えません。全ての牛が期待通りに成長するわけではないので、そこにはまだ改善の余地があります。オスとメスの牛それぞれに合わせた最適な飼育方法を模索しており、より良い結果を目指して努力を続けています。」


記者「さらなる改善のために現在取り組んでいることはありますか？」

北里さん「確かに改善のために色々と試行錯誤しています。最近では、さまざまな添加剤を使って牛の健康と成長を促進しています。ただし、添加剤の使用は慎重に行い、牛の健康にとって最適なものを選ぶよう心がけています。さらに、飼育方法の改善や環境の調整も継続しており、牛たちの成長をより良い方向に導くためには何が必要か、常に考えています。牛たちの成長を80%、90%向上させるためには、継続的な改善と試みが不可欠なのです。」"

Reporter: "Please tell us about the ingenuity and attention to detail that you put into raising your cows."

Kitasato: "Yes, we do have some special ingenuity in the way we raise our cows. The most important thing is the way we feed them. We keep our calves attached to their mothers and breastfeed them, but the nutrition in the mother's milk gradually disappears over time. That means they need to get their nutrition from food. We feed them well from a young age and give them plenty of nutrition early on. This allows the cows to grow healthy and quickly. I feel that if we start feeding them early, they have no resistance to weaning."

Reporter: "Could you tell me more about the timing and method of feeding them?"

Kitasato: "Farmers who keep their cows with their mothers usually keep them with their mothers for about three months, but we separate them from their mothers at about 70 days old and feed them. To make the transition go smoothly, we separate them from their mothers only during the day from about 20 days old, eliminating their resistance to being separated from their mothers. This method is one of the secrets to accelerating the growth of our cows. We also pay close attention to keeping our cows healthy by being sensitive to weather and seasonal changes and discovering them early."

Reporter: "So, what about your farm, Kitasato-san? If you were to give the farm a score, how would you rate it?

Kitasato: "Honestly, I'd give it about 50 points. The reason is that the cows are growing healthily, which is a high rating. However, the breeding process is not always perfect. Not all cows grow as expected, so there is still room for improvement. We are looking for the best breeding method for both male and female cows, and we are continuing to work hard to achieve better results."

Reporter: "Are you currently working on anything to further improve?"

Kitasato: "We are certainly trying various things to improve. Recently, we have been using various additives to promote the health and growth of the cows. However, we use additives carefully and try to choose the best additives for the health of the cows. In addition, we continue to improve the breeding method and adjust the environment, and we are always thinking about what is needed to lead the cows in a better direction. Continuous improvement and experimentation are essential to improve the growth of the cows by 80% or 90%."

試行錯誤の中の成長と発見

記者「北里さんが中村さんから学んで先行投資を行ったことなど教えてください。」

Reporter: "Are you having any problems with the condition of the cows?"

Kitasato: "Well, recently we have been worried about the difficulty of them coming into heat and the decline in conception rate. There are several possible reasons for this. For example, feeding methods and climate change may be contributing factors. The health of the cows and external factors may also be contributing factors. To solve this problem, we are trying various things, such as reviewing the environment in which the cows are raised. "

Reporter: "Is there anyone who has particularly influenced you or who you use as reference in running your ranch?"

Kitasato: "There is a man named Nakamura who is no longer a cattle farmer. He understands cattle very well, and when he starts talking, he never stops. I learned a lot from him. What is particularly important is the importance of upfront investment. He has actively invested in new breeding methods and technologies. As a result, our cattle breeding techniques have improved, and this has contributed greatly to the profits of the ranch. His experience and knowledge are extremely valuable for us in running our ranch."

Reporter: "Please tell us about the upfront investments that you have learned from Nakamura."

Kitasato: "What I particularly value is the health management of the cattle. For example, we administer various vaccines to prevent diseases and change the feed to improve the condition of the cattle. These investments are very important for maintaining the health of the cattle and improving productivity. Following Nakamura's advice and investing in these areas has improved the overall performance of the ranch."

「一日一歩」の力

記者「新規に牛の飼育を始める方々に向けて、何かメッセージはありますか？」

北里さん「牛の飼育を始める方には、まず牛や仕事が好きであることが重要だと思います。牛に対する情熱も大切ですが、毎日の作業にも熱意を持つことが成功の鍵です。毎日の仕事を続けることは容易ではありませんが、その中で感じる達成感や喜びを見つけることが重要です。牛に対する愛情と仕事に対する情熱があれば、困難を乗り越えていけるでしょう。」


記者「牛の飼育における楽しい部分はどのようなところですか？」

北里さん「牛の飼育においては、楽しいというよりも、感動と達成感が大きな要素です。例えば、牛が生まれたときの感動や、一日の作業が無事に終わったときの達成感は特別です。日々の作業を終えた後、家族と過ごす時間や風呂に入ってビールを飲むような日常の小さな幸せも、私にとっては大切な楽しみの一つです。このような日々の小さな喜びが、長い間仕事を続ける原動力になっています。」

記者「座右の銘や、牧場経営における哲学について教えてください。」

北里さん「私の座右の銘は「一日一歩」です。毎日少しずつでも前進することが大切だと思っています。若い頃は多くのことを同時に進められますが、年を重ねると無理はできなくなります。毎日コツコツと一歩ずつ進むことで、長期的な成功を築くことができると信じています。この座右の銘は、牛の飼育においても、そして日々の生活においても私の指針となっています。」

Kitasato: "I think it's important for people who are starting to raise cattle to love cattle and their work. Passion for cattle is important, but the key to success is to be enthusiastic about your daily work. If you have love for cattle and passion for your work, you will be able to overcome the difficulties."

Reporter: "What is the fun part of raising cattle?"

Kitasato: "Rather than being fun, the big elements of raising cattle are the excitement and the sense of accomplishment. For example, the excitement when a cow is born and the sense of accomplishment when a day's work is completed safely are special. For me, small everyday joys like spending time with my family after finishing my daily work, taking a bath and drinking a beer are also important pleasures. These small daily joys are what motivate me to continue working for a long time."

Reporter: "Please tell us your motto and your philosophy on running a ranch."

Kitasato: "My motto is 'One step a day.' I think it's important to make progress every day, even if it's just a little bit. When you're young, you can do many things at the same time, but as you get older, you can't push yourself too hard. I believe that by taking small, everyday steps, you can build long-term success. This motto guides me in both raising cattle and in my daily life."
