小さな始まり、大きな成果

記者「永瀬さんの牧場の技術的なこだわりについて教えていただけますか？」

永瀬さん「私たちの牧場では、繁殖牛の“親付け”を基本にしています。ただ、特に但馬系の牛は母乳の出が少ないことが多いので、そこを補う形で“追加哺乳”を行っています。この方法は岐阜の繁殖農家ではそれほど一般的ではないかもしれませんが、とても重要だと考えています。乳量が足りないと子牛が必要な栄養を十分に摂取できず、成長に影響が出ることがあります。追加哺乳では人工乳を使用し、子牛の成長を安定させると同時に、親牛にも余計な負担をかけないようにしています。手間はかかりますが、これによって親牛の受胎率も下がらず、子牛の健康状態や増体が向上するため、牧場全体の成果にもつながっています。」


記者「肥育牛の導入に関しては、どのような工夫をされていますか？」

永瀬さん「肥育牛を導入するときは、200kg前後の小柄な牛を選ぶようにしています。理由は、導入後の管理がしやすく、自分の牧場環境に合った成長を促せるからです。確かに、小さい牛は最初に手間がかかります。体が小さい分、飼料管理や環境適応に注意が必要です。でも、その分だけ自分たちの手でしっかりコントロールできるのが大きなメリットです。例えば、高たんぱく飼料を与えることで骨格をしっかり形成させ、便の量が少ないことも管理面での助けになります。こうして育てた牛は、結果的に市場でも評価が高い良質な肥育牛になります。」

記者「飼料管理についての工夫を教えてください。」

永瀬さん「飼料管理にはかなり力を入れています。自家製飼料と市販の高品質飼料を組み合わせて、牛に必要な栄養を効率的に与えるようにしています。特に、大豆粕や高たんぱくな飼料を活用し、子牛の離乳後に必要な栄養をしっかり補っています。また、乳酸菌を含む整菌剤も積極的に取り入れており、これが牛の健康管理に大きく寄与しています。結果として、病気になる回数が減り、安定した成長を実現できています。こうした細やかな管理が、牛たちの良好な状態を保つ鍵だと思っています。」

​Reporter: "Could you tell us about the technical commitment of Mr. Nagase's farm?"

Nagase: "At our farm, we basically "parent" the breeding cows. However, Tajima cows in particular often don't produce much milk, so we supplement that with "additional feeding." This method may not be very common among Gifu breeding farms, but I think it's very important. If the amount of milk is insufficient, the calf won't be able to get enough of the nutrients it needs, which can affect its growth. We use artificial milk for additional feeding, which stabilizes the calf's growth while also avoiding putting unnecessary strain on the mother cow. It takes a lot of work, but it keeps the conception rate of the parent cows high, improves the health and weight gain of the calves, and leads to overall success on the farm.

Reporter: "What kind of ideas do you have for introducing fattening cattle?"

Nagase: "When introducing fattening cattle, we try to choose small cattle of around 200kg. This is because they are easier to manage after introduction and we can encourage them to grow in a way that suits our farm environment. It's true that small cattle require more work at first. Because they are small, we need to be careful about feed management and environmental adaptation. But that's because we can control them more with our own hands. This is a big advantage. For example, feeding high-protein feed helps to form a strong skeleton, and the small amount of feces also helps with management. Cows raised in this way ultimately become high-quality fattening cattle that are highly valued in the market. ”

Reporter: “Please tell us about your ideas for feed management.”

Nagase: “We put a lot of effort into feed management. We combine homemade feed with commercially available high-quality feed to efficiently provide the cows with the nutrition they need. In particular, we use soybean meal and high-protein feed to thoroughly supplement the nutrition needed after the calves are weaned. We also actively use bacteria regulators containing lactic acid bacteria. We have been incorporating this system, which has contributed greatly to the health management of our cows. As a result, they get sick less often and we have been able to achieve stable growth. I think this kind of detailed management is the key to keeping our cows in good condition. ”

手間の先に見える奇跡

記者「自分の牛の状態に点数をつけるとしたら、どのくらいですか？」

永瀬さん「まだまだ改善の余地がありますね。母牛については70点といったところです。種付けの成功率が良いのでそこは評価できますが、コストの面で課題があります。例えば、添加剤などのコストが高いので、もう少し効率的な方法を模索している段階です。一方で子牛は40点くらいです。去年からワクチン投与を始め、予防策を強化したことで改善は見られましたが、まだ課題が残っています。」


記者「課題克服のために、どのような取り組みをされていますか？」

永瀬さん「昨年から、子牛に予防的な添加剤やワクチンの使用を始めました。これにより、下痢や風邪の発生率が大幅に減少しました。また、飼料の質を見直し、生産性を高めるために工夫を重ねています。母牛の健康管理にも力を入れ、種付けの成功率を維持しながらコストの見直しを進めています。全体的には着実に改善が進んでいると感じています。」


記者「おすすめのアイテムや道具があれば教えてください。」

永瀬さん「“ミラクルアニマル”という名前の整菌剤を使っています。これは、生きた乳酸菌やビタミンB群が含まれており、牛の消化を助けるとともに健康維持にも役立っています。この整菌剤を使うようになってから、下痢や風邪が減っただけでなく、牛全体が元気になったと実感しています。特に子牛に使用すると、病気予防効果が顕著です。これまで試した中でも、最も効果を感じるアイテムですね。」

Reporter: “If you had to rate the condition of your cows, how much would you rate it?”

Nagase: “There is still room for improvement. I would give the mother cows a score of about 70 points. The success rate of insemination is good, so I can appreciate that, but there are issues in terms of cost. For example, the cost of additives is high, so we are in the process of looking for a more efficient method. On the other hand, I would give the calves a score of about 40 points. We have seen improvements since we started administering vaccines last year and strengthened preventive measures, but there are still issues to be addressed. "

Reporter: "What efforts are you making to overcome these challenges?"

Nagase: "Since last year, we have started using preventative additives and vaccines for calves. This has significantly reduced the incidence of diarrhea and colds. We have also reviewed the quality of feed and made efforts to increase productivity. We are also focusing on managing the health of the mother cows, and are reviewing costs while maintaining the success rate of insemination. Overall, we feel that we are making steady improvements."

Reporter: "Are there any items or tools you would recommend?"

Nagase: "We use a bacteria-conditioning agent called 'Miracle Animal.' This contains live lactic acid bacteria and B vitamins, which aids in digestion and helps maintain the health of cows. Since I started using this bacteria conditioner, not only have I noticed a decrease in diarrhea and colds, but I also feel that the cows as a whole have become healthier. ゲームのように牛と向き合う

記者「橋本さん、師匠や目標にしている方がいらっしゃれば教えてください。」

​永瀬さん「はい、橋本俊介さんと、平田篤史さんのお二方です。橋本さんは、牛作りの丁寧さが際立っています。頭数を増やすのではなく、一頭一頭に手間をかけて高品質な牛を育て上げるその姿勢にはいつも感銘を受けます。牛への愛情と手間のかけ方が本当に素晴らしく、私にとって理想の繁殖農家です。」


記者「平田さんについてはいかがですか？」

永瀬さん「平田さんはもともと看護師をされていた方で、同じくらいのタイミングで就農されました。平田さんも牛を育てる独特の方法をお持ちです。例えば、安価な牛を購入して、手間をかけて高品質に育て上げるというやり方は、自分のやり方とも共通していて、とても共感しています。また、成績も素晴らしく、人間的にも非常に尊敬できる方です。牛作りだけでなく、人としての在り方も学びたいと思っています。」


記者「永瀬さんの座右の銘についても教えていただけますか？」

永瀬さん「私の座右の銘は“継続は力なり”です。この言葉の大切さを実感したのは、牛飼いを始めたばかりの頃です。最初は正直、牛飼いに対して特別な思い入れもなく、ただ流されて仕事をしていました。でも、師匠の橋本俊介さんに『何かを続けてみろ』とアドバイスをもらい、“追加哺乳”を始めてみたんです。すると少しずつですが牛の状態が良くなり、それが自信につながりました。今では、継続することが一番の武器だと感じています。」


記者「最後に、永瀬さんが牛飼いという職業を好きになった理由を教えてください。」

永瀬さん「牛は手間をかけた分だけ答えてくれるんです。それが好きになったきっかけですね。以前は、牛任せの飼い方をしていて、母牛に子牛の世話を丸投げすることもありました。でも、自分の手を加えた育成方法を実践し始めてから、牛が目に見えて健康的になり、結果が出る喜びを知りました。まるで育成ゲームのように、試行錯誤しながら調整を加える作業が楽しくなってきたんです。今では、牛作りの奥深さに夢中です。」

Reporter: “Mr. Hashimoto, please tell us if you have a mentor or someone you look up to.”

Nagase: “Yes, Mr. Hashimoto Shunsuke and Mr. Hirata Atsushi. Mr. Hashimoto is outstanding in the care he takes in raising his cows. I am always impressed by his attitude of not increasing the number of cattle, but instead taking care of each individual cattle to raise high-quality cattle. His love for his cattle and the care he takes are truly wonderful, and to me, he is the ideal breeding farmer.

Reporter: "What do you think of Hirata-san?"

Nagase: "Hirata-san used to be a nurse, and started farming around the same time. Hirata-san also has a unique way of raising cattle. For example, his method of buying inexpensive cattle and taking care to raise them to high quality is similar to my own method, and I really empathize with him. His results are also excellent, I respect him very much as a person. I want to learn not only about raising cattle, but also about how to be a person. ”

Reporter: “Could you tell us about your motto, Mr. Nagase?”

Nagase: “My motto is ‘persistence is power’. I realized the importance of this phrase when I first started raising cattle. To be honest, at first, I didn’t have any special feelings about raising cattle, and I just went with the flow. But my master, Shunsuke Hashimoto, gave me advice to ‘try doing something consistently’, so I started ‘additional feeding’. Then, little by little, the condition of the cattle improved, which gave me confidence. Now I feel that persistence is my greatest weapon. ”

Reporter: “Finally, please tell us why you like being a cowherd.”

Nagase: “Cows respond to the amount of effort you put into them. That’s what made me like them. In the past, I left the care of the cows to the mothers, and sometimes I left the care of the calves to her. But after I started to practice my own breeding methods, the cows became visibly healthier, and I learned the joy of seeing results. It was like a breeding game, and I started to enjoy the process of making adjustments through trial and error. Now I’m fascinated by the depth of cow-raising.”
