牛たちの一年を支える

記者「西尾さんの牧場でこだわっているポイントを教えてください。」

西尾さん「うちは繁殖農家なので、一年一産することを非常に重視しています。一年一度で確実に牛を出産させるための環境作りに力を入れています。」


記者「一年一産を実現するために具体的にどのような行動を取っていますか？」

西尾さん「牛の妊娠期間は大体285日ですから、年産を実現するためには分娩後80日以内に再度種付けを行わなければなりません。分娩直後はすぐには種付けできないので、約40日後から種付けを開始し、残りの40日以内に成功させるようにしています。このスケジュール管理が非常に重要なんです。」


記者「その種付けを成功させるために必要なことは何ですか？」

西尾さん「まず、牛の健康状態を常にチェックし、ビタミンや微量要素の管理を徹底しています。そして、分娩後できるだけ早く初回の発情を見つけるために、牛の観察をしっかり行います。この観察と栄養管理が、種付けの成功に直結する大事な要素です。」


記者「子牛のケアについても重要だと思うのですが、その点はいかがでしょうか？」

西尾さん「そうですね。一年一産を達成するためには、子牛のケアも非常に重要です。うちでは早期に母牛から子牛を離し、ミルクを与えています。全国的には3日から1週間で離すところが多いですが、うちは可能な限り早く行っています。これにより母牛の回復を促進し、次の繁殖サイクルに備えることができます。また、子牛の栄養管理も徹底し、分娩前後のケアを行うことで、健康な成長をサポートしています。」

Reporter: "Please tell us what you focus on at your ranch."

Nishio: "We are a breeding farm, so we place great importance on giving birth once a year. We focus on creating an environment that will ensure that cows give birth once a year."

Reporter: "What specific actions are you taking to achieve this?"

Nishio: "A cow's gestation period is roughly 285 days, so in order to achieve annual birth, they must be re-inbred within 80 days of calving. Since cows cannot be inbred immediately after calving, we start inbreding about 40 days later and try to succeed within the remaining 40 days. This schedule management is very important."


Reporter: "What do you need to do to make the breeding successful?"

Nishio: "First, we always check the health of the cows and thoroughly manage their vitamins and trace elements. We also carefully observe the cows to find their first heat as soon as possible after calving. This observation and nutritional management are important factors that directly link to the success of the breeding."


Reporter: "I think that taking care of the calves is also important. What do you think about that?"

Nishio: "That's right. In order to achieve one birth per year, it is also important to take good care of the calves. It is very important. We separate the calves from their mothers early and feed them milk. Many cows across the country separate them after 3 days to a week, but we do it as soon as possible. This helps the mothers recover and prepare for the next breeding cycle. We also thoroughly manage the nutrition of the calves and provide care before and after calving to support their healthy growth. ”

牛たちの健康管理を極める

記者「西尾さんの牛の状態に点数をつけるなら何点ですか？」

西尾さん「そうですね、最良の状態だと90点くらいですが、今の状態は80点くらいでしょうか。まず、一年一産が目標ですが、うちはこの10年間、ほぼ全ての牛が一年一産を達成しています。しかし、全体の健康状態を見ると、100頭中いくつかは軽い病気や肺炎などの問題が発生します。それでも大きな問題なく順調に育っていますので、80点と評価しています。」


記者「母牛の繁殖成績は具体的にどのようなものですか？」

西尾さん「うちの平均分娩間隔は約11.6ヶ月です。12ヶ月を切れば一年一産が可能になりますが、これを10年以上達成してきました。種付けの回数は平均1.8回で、理想は1回ですが、現実的には1.5回を目標としています。また、全ての牛が均等に良い成績を出すように、さらに改善を目指しています。」


記者「点数を100点に近づけるために改善したいポイントは何ですか？」

西尾さん「今のところ、分娩前後の栄養管理を徹底していますが、種付けの成功率をさらに高めるために、ホルモン注射などを活用しています。また、個々の牛の状態をより詳しく観察し、必要に応じて適切な対応を行うことが重要です。今後もこの一年一産という基本方針を維持しつつ、さらに細かい管理を行っていきたいです。」


記者「具体的にどのような改善が効果的だと考えていますか？」

西尾さん「今も飼養管理はしっかり行っていますが、牛の栄養状態を常に最適に保つことが重要です。特にビタミンやミネラルの不足を防ぐため、適切なエサや添加剤を使用しています。また、繁殖機能をサポートするために、種付けのタイミングを正確に見極めるための観察を徹底しています。これらの取り組みを継続し、さらに改善することで、牛の状態を100点に近づけていきたいです。」

Reporter: “If you were to rate the condition of your cows, Mr. Nishio, how many points would you give them?”

Nishio: “Well, at their best, they’d be about 90 points, but right now, I’d say they’re about 80 points. First of all, they only give birth once a year, so Our goal is to have almost all of our cows give birth once a year for the past 10 years. However, when we look at their overall health, some out of 100 cows develop minor illnesses or problems such as pneumonia. Still, they are growing well without any major issues, so we give them an 80% rating.


Reporter: "What is the breeding performance of the cows specifically?"

Nishio: "Our average calving interval is about 11.6 months. If we could get it to be less than 12 months, we would be able to give birth once a year, and we have been achieving this for over 10 years. We breed 1.8 times on average, and although once is ideal, we are aiming for 1.5 times in reality. We are also aiming to improve further so that all cows can perform equally well. "


Reporter: "What points would you like to improve in order to get closer to 100 points?"

Nishio: "For now, we are thoroughly managing the nutrition before and after calving, but we are using hormone injections to further increase the success rate of insemination. It is also important to observe the condition of each cow more closely and take appropriate measures as necessary. We would like to continue to maintain this basic policy of one calf per year while managing the cows more precisely."


Reporter: "What specific improvements do you think would be effective?"

Nishio: "We are still managing the feeding process carefully, but we are looking into the nutritional status of the cows. It is important to keep them in the best condition at all times. We use appropriate feed and additives to prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies in particular. We also thoroughly observe the cows to accurately determine the timing of breeding in order to support their reproductive function. By continuing these efforts and making further improvements, we hope to bring the cows' condition closer to 100%. "

二度と来ない今日を百日のように

記者「師匠や目標にしている方はいらっしゃいますか？」

西尾さん「はい、私には二人の師匠がいます。まず一人目は長崎農大の研修で出会った荒木大作さんという方です。大学のカリキュラムで1年生の時に1週間、2年生の時には1か月の研修があり、その時に出会った方なんです。元々地元では農業には興味がなかったのですが、その方の牧場での経験が大きな影響を与えました。彼の牧場では120頭の牛を飼っていて、規模の違いに驚きました。彼は学生だった私に機械の操作や牛の種付けなど、さまざまな経験をさせてくれました。この経験が私が地元に戻って牧場を継ぐ決意を固めるきっかけになりました。」


記者「もう一人の師匠についても教えてください。」

西尾さん「もう一人は地元の農家の鳥山さんです。大学を卒業して地元に戻った後、国の後継者育成制度を利用して鳥山さんのもとで2年間研修を受けました。彼もまた、多くの経験をさせてくれる方で、牛の共進会に参加したり、地元の農家コミュニティに私を紹介してくれたりしました。彼のおかげで地元での活動がスムーズに進みました。」


記者「そうした経験が牧場経営にどのように役立っていますか？」

西尾さん「鳥山さんのおかげで、地元の農家コミュニティに溶け込みやすくなりました。また、牛の共進会などのイベントに参加することで、多くの知識と経験を得ることができました。これらの経験が、現在の牧場経営に大いに役立っています。」


記者「最後に座右の銘を教えてください。」

西尾さん「『二度と来ない今日というこの日、この一日を百日のように生きたい』という言葉です。この言葉は小学生の頃に出会い、今でも心に残っています。毎日を大切にし、一瞬一瞬を全力で生きることが大事だと感じています。」


記者「その言葉を大事にしている理由を教えてください。」

西尾さん「小学生の頃、親しい人の死や大切なものを失う経験を通じて、日々を大切に生きることの重要性を感じました。後悔しないためにも、今できることを全力でやることが大切だと思っています。」

Reporter: "Do you have a mentor or someone you look up to?"

Nishio: "Yes, I have two mentors. The first is Daisaku Araki, whom I met during training at Nagasaki University of Agriculture. I met him for one week in my first year and then again for two years as part of the university curriculum. When I was a student, I had a one-month training course, and that's when I met him. I wasn't originally interested in farming in my hometown, but my experience at his farm had a big impact on me. His farm had 120 cows, and I was surprised at the difference in scale. He gave me a variety of experiences, such as operating machinery and breeding cows, when I was a student. This experience was what made me decide to return to my hometown and take over the farm.


Reporter: "Please tell us about your other mentor."

Nishio: "The other is Toriyama, a local farmer. After graduating from university and returning to his hometown, he joined the national successor training program. I took advantage of this opportunity to train under Toriyama for two years. He also gave me a lot of experience, participating in cattle shows and introducing me to the local farming community. Thanks to him, my activities in the local area went smoothly."


Reporter: "How has that experience helped you in running your farm?"

Nishio: "Thanks to Toriyama, it became easier for me to blend into the local farming community. Also, by participating in events such as cattle shows, I was able to gain a lot of knowledge and experience. These experiences are very useful in running my farm today. "


Reporter: "Finally, please tell us your motto."

Nishio: "'Today, this day will never come again, so I want to live this day as if it were a hundred days.' I first encountered this phrase when I was in elementary school, and it has stayed with me to this day. I feel it is important to cherish each day and live every moment to the fullest."


Reporter: "Please tell us why you value this phrase."

Nishio: "When I was in elementary school, I experienced the death of a loved one and the loss of something important, and through that experience, I felt the importance of cherishing each day. In order to avoid regrets, I think it is important to do everything I can now to the fullest."
