450年の伝統を守る牛越祭

記者「山下さんが今情熱を込められているという、牛越祭の歴史や伝統について教えてください。」

山下さん「この牛越祭はもう400年以上続いている古いお祭りです。元々、菅原神社という、学問の神様である菅原道真公を祀っている神社がこの地にありまして、道真公が牛を愛していたという伝説が残っているんです。祭りはその縁で始まったと言われています。神社は京都の北野天満宮や福岡の太宰府天満宮と同じくらい格式が高いとされているんですよ。ただ、文献は江戸時代に火災で焼失してしまったため、はっきりした起源は不明ですが、戦国時代から約450年は続いていると言われています。お祭りのメインイベントは、牛が高さ50センチほどの丸太を飛び越えるもので、その際には牛にカラフルな飾りを付けて、祭りらしい華やかさを演出するんです。」


記者「とても歴史のあるお祭りなんですね。どの地域で行われているものなのでしょうか？」

山下さん「このお祭りは、西川北地区を中心に行われています。元々はこの地区の農家たちが中心となって守ってきた祭りなんですが、約50年前からは人吉や伊佐の方からも子牛を連れて参加するようになっていました。私も昔は、通りに牛の行列ができるくらい多くの人や牛が集まっていたと聞いています。地元だけでなく、周囲の農家からも親しまれ、地域を越えて賑わっていたんです。」

記者「それほどまでに多くの人々に愛されてきたお祭りなんですね。しかし、今何か問題点があるともお聞きしましたが、具体的にはどのような課題がありますか？」

山下さん「そうですね、まず牛の価格が下がっていることと、飼料代の高騰が続いているため、牛を飼う農家が減ってしまっているんです。10年ほど前は15～16軒の農家が参加していたんですが、今ではその数が半分以下の7軒ほどに減ってしまいました。それに、次世代へ祭りを継承していく若い農家も少なく、今では2～3軒しか後を継ぐ見込みがないんです。そして、コロナ禍の影響で、外出自粛や集まりが減ったことで、観客も減り、祭りの盛り上がりが以前よりも少なくなってきています。加えて、高齢化も進んでおり、地域の人手不足も問題ですね。」

Reporter: "Please tell us about the history and traditions of the Ushigoe Festival, which you are so passionate about."

Yamashita: "The Ushigoe Festival is an old festival that has been held for over 400 years. Originally, there was a shrine here called Sugawara Shrine, which enshrines Sugawara Michizane, the god of learning, and there is a legend that Michizane loved cows. It is said that the festival started because of this connection. The shrine is said to be as prestigious as Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka. However, the documents were lost in a fire during the Edo period, so the exact origin is unknown, but it is said to have been held for about 450 years since the Sengoku period. The main event of the festival is when a cow jumps over a log about 50 cm high, and the cow is decorated with colorful decorations to create a festive atmosphere."

Reporter: "It's a festival with a long history. Where is it held?"

Yamashita: "This festival is held mainly in the Nishikawakita area. It was originally a festival that was mainly protected by the farmers of this area, so However, about 50 years ago, people from Hitoyoshi and Isa started bringing their calves to participate. I also heard that in the past, so many people and cows gathered that the cows would parade down the street. It was loved not only by locals but also by surrounding farmers, and was lively beyond the region. ”


Reporter: “So it’s a festival that has been loved by so many people. However, I’ve heard that there are some problems now. What are the specific issues?”

Yamashita: “Well, first of all, the price of cows has fallen and the cost of feed has continued to rise, so the number of farmers raising cows has decreased. About 10 years ago, 15 to 16 farmers participated, but now the number has decreased to less than half, about 7. In addition, there are few young farmers who will pass on the festival to the next generation, and now only 2 to 3 farmers are expected to take over. And because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, people have refrained from going out and gathering less, so the number of spectators has decreased and the festival is less exciting than before. In addition, the aging population is progressing, and the shortage of manpower in the area is also a problem.”

消えゆく伝統に抗い、若者が守る牛越祭の未来

記者「この牛越祭が抱える問題を解決するために、何か取り組んでいることがあれば教えてください。」

山下さん「やっぱり、若者が盛り上げていかないと、この祭りも10年、20年先には続かないと思います。幸いなことに、地元の若者たちは皆、この祭りが昔から自分たちの身近にあるものだと感じていて、どうにかして次に繋げていきたいという情熱や思いを持っているんです。ただ、自分たちだけの力では限界があることも感じていて、祭りをもっと広く知ってもらうためには、こうした取材を通じて発信することが重要だと思っています。この牛越祭は宮崎県内では知られている方ですが、全国的にはまだ珍しい存在ですから、テレビや新聞などを通じて発信してもらえると嬉しいです。そんな取り組みを今、少しずつ進めています。」


記者「地元の若者たちが積極的に活動されているのはとても素晴らしいことですね。このようにお祭りを広げたい、盛り上げたいと思う理由について教えていただけますか？」

山下さん「そうですね、やっぱり自分も子どもの頃、父に連れられてこの祭りを見に行ったんですが、その時に牛が飛び越える姿を見てすごくかっこいいと思ったんです。父が牛を引いて飛ばす姿は憧れでもありました。それに、他にない独特なお祭りだからこそ、この伝統を絶やさずに続けていきたいという気持ちが強いです。昔のように多くの人が集まる光景をもう一度見たいし、次の世代にもこの魅力を伝えていけたらと思っています。」


記者「そうした思いを胸に活動されているのですね。ちなみに、山下さん自身も牛を飛ばされた経験はありますか？」

山下さん「はい、初めて牛を飛ばしたのは小学生の時でした。それ以来、毎年自分の牛を飛ばしてきました。今年も1頭飛ばしましたよ。今年は特に元気な牛を連れていったので、力強く飛んでくれました。祭りの目的は、牛が元気であることを神様に見せることなんです。無病息災を願って飛ばすんですが、それがやっぱり大事なポイントですね。」

記者「無病息災を祈るお祭りなのですね。これは農業の豊作とも関係しているのでしょうか？」

山下さん「そうです。7月28日は旧暦で言えば田植えが終わった頃で、昔は牛が田んぼを耕す大切な存在でした。だからこそ、牛が病気をせず、太って元気であることを願うんです。それが無病息災と同時に、五穀豊穣にも繋がるんじゃないかなと思います。実際、この地域は昔から米の産地として有名で、祭りのおかげもあるのかなと信じています。」

Reporter: "Please tell us if there is anything being done to solve the problems facing the Ushigoe Festival."

Yamashita: "After all, I don't think this festival will continue for another 10 or 20 years unless young people get involved. Fortunately, all the local young people feel that this festival has been close to them for a long time, and they have a passion and desire to somehow pass it on to the next generation. However, they also feel that there is a limit to what they can do on their own, and they think it is important to spread the word about the festival through these interviews in order to make it more widely known. The Ushigoe Festival is well known in Miyazaki Prefecture, but it is still rare nationwide, so I would be happy if it could be spread through television and newspapers. We are currently working on such initiatives little by little."

Reporter: "It's wonderful that local young people are so actively involved. Can you tell us why you want to spread the festival and get it more popular?"

Yamashita: "Well, when I was a child, my father took me to see this festival, and I thought it was really cool to see the cows jumping over the obstacles. My father I was always fascinated by the sight of people pulling and flying the cows. And because it's such a unique festival, I feel a strong desire to continue this tradition. I want to see the scene of so many people gathering again like in the old days, and I hope to be able to convey this charm to the next generation."


Reporter: "So you're working with that feeling in mind. By the way, have you ever flown a cow yourself?"

Yamashita: "Yes, the first time I flew a cow was when I was in elementary school. Since then, I've flown my own cow every year. I flew one this year as well. This year, I had a particularly energetic cow. I took it with me, and it flew powerfully. The purpose of the festival is to show the gods that the cows are healthy. They fly them in hopes of good health, and that's the most important point.


Reporter: "So it's a festival to pray for good health. Does this have something to do with a good harvest?"

Yamashita: "Yes. July 28th is around the time that rice planting is finished in the lunar calendar, and in the old days, cows were important for plowing the rice fields. That's why we pray for the cows to be healthy, fat, and healthy. I think that this will lead to good health and good grain harvests. In fact, this area has long been famous as a rice-producing area, and I believe that this is also thanks to the festival."

伝統を背負い挑戦する、牛越祭の新たな一歩

記者「師匠や目標にしている方がいれば教えてください。」

山下さん「自分が目標にしているのは、やっぱり家族、特に祖父や父、そして祖母です。祖父は長年牛を育ててきて、その経験や技術は自分にとってすごく参考になります。祖母は、牛の世話を主に担当していて、例えば子牛の体調の変化に気付く観察力が本当にすごいんです。そして父は、自分の仕事もあって毎日牛を見るわけではないんですが、牛を見抜く力が卓越しています。特にセリ市では、父が選んだ牛は将来的にとても良い成長を見せることが多いです。自分も牛の血統を選んだりはしますが、最後の決定は父に任せていますね。やっぱり経験がものを言う部分が大きいです。」


記者「山下さんが選んだ牛とお父様が選んだ牛では、やはり成長の違いがあるんですね。」

山下さん「そうですね。自分がある程度選びますが、最終的な判断は父がします。血統や牛の状態を見ながら選ぶのですが、父の選んだ牛は、後々見ても良い成績を残すことが多いです。自分もまだまだ学びが必要だなと感じています。」


記者「お祭りについても、特に尊敬する方はいらっしゃいますか？」

山下さん「はい、お祭りに関しては、やっぱり地元の自治会長や保存会長ですね。特に今の自治会長である都留さんは、すごく情熱的で、祭りを盛り上げるために積極的に取り組んでいます。都留さんはただ牛を飛ばすだけでなく、アナウンスを入れたり、観客を楽しませる工夫をして、祭りの雰囲気を作るのが上手です。毎年自治会長は変わりますが、都留さんように情熱的な方がいると、祭りも活気が出ます。」

記者「最後に山下さんの座右の銘を教えてください。」

山下さん「自分が大事にしているのは『挑戦』という言葉です。農業も今は厳しい状況にありますし、牛の飼育にしても、餌代の高騰や市場の変化など、問題がたくさんあります。それに、祭りも若手不足や人手不足という課題があります。そうした問題に対して、自分がどう挑戦し、どう解決していくかが重要だと思っています。挑戦し続けることで、現状を乗り越えていきたいです。」

Reporter: "Please tell us if you have a mentor or someone you look up to."

Yamashita: "My role models are my family, especially my grandfather, father, and grandmother. My grandfather has been raising cattle for many years, and his experience and skills are very helpful to me. My grandmother is mainly in charge of taking care of the cattle, and she has amazing observation skills, for example, for noticing changes in the physical condition of calves. My father doesn't see the cattle every day because of his job, but he has an outstanding ability to judge cattle. Especially at the auction, the cattle my father chooses often show very good growth in the future. I also choose the cattle's bloodline, but I leave the final decision to my father. After all, experience is a big part of it."


Reporter: "There is a difference in growth between the cattle you choose and the cattle your father chooses, isn't there?"

Yamashita: "That's right. I choose to some extent, but my father makes the final decision. I choose while looking at the bloodline and the condition of the cattle, but the cattle my father chooses often show good results in the future. I still have a lot to learn I feel that way. ”


Reporter: “Is there anyone you particularly respect when it comes to festivals?”

Yamashita: “Yes, when it comes to festivals, it’s the local neighborhood association president and the preservation association president. In particular, the current neighborhood association president, Tsuru-san, is very passionate and actively works to liven up the festival. Tsuru-san doesn’t just make the cows fly, he also makes announcements and comes up with ways to entertain the audience, and is good at creating a festival atmosphere. The neighborhood association president changes every year, but when there is a passionate person like Tsuru-san, the festival becomes lively.”

Reporter: “Finally, what is your motto, Yamashita-san?”

Yamashita: “The word ‘challenge’ is important to me. Agriculture is also in a tough situation now, and even with cattle breeding, there are many problems such as rising feed prices and changes in the market. In addition, festivals also have issues such as a lack of young people and labor shortages. I think it’s important to challenge and solve such problems. I want to overcome the current situation by continuing to challenge myself.”
