声をかけ、心を寄せる

記者「北﨑さんの牧場で特にこだわっているポイントや工夫されていることを教えてください。」​

北﨑さん「私たちは牛に対する声かけを欠かさないことを心がけています。朝は『おはよう』、夕方には『今日も一日お疲れ様』といった具合に、時間ごとに牛たちに話しかけるんです。この声かけが、牛たちの安心感や穏やかさにつながっているのかなと思っています。実際、他の農家さんからも『北﨑さんの牛は大人しいね』と言っていただけることが多く、それが私たちの一番のセールスポイントだと思っています。」


記者「なるほど。声かけや愛情表現以外で、特に工夫されている点はありますか？」

北﨑さん「女性が牛の世話をしていることが、私たちの牧場の大きな特徴だと思っています。女性ならではの気配りや視点で牛たちを観察することで、小さな変化にも気づきやすくなります。それが牛たちの健康管理にも役立っています。また、牛舎内の雰囲気も柔らかくなり、結果として牛たちがストレスなく過ごせているのではないかと思います。こうした細やかな配慮が、良い育成環境を作っていると思います。」


記者「情報収集にも力を入れているとお聞きしましたが、どのような形で行っていますか？」

北﨑さん「自分が悩んだときには、セリで結果を出している農家さんや専門家に恥ずかしがらずに相談することを大切にしています。例えば『飼料は何キロ与えていますか？』『どうやって混ぜていますか？』といった具体的な質問を率直に聞いています。自分の牧場に合う情報を取捨選択し、まずは試してみることが大事です。成功も失敗も経験として積み重ねることで、牧場経営に活かしていけると思っています。」


 記者「最近その情報収集が実を結んだエピソードがあれば教えてください。」 

北﨑さん「以前、貧血の子牛を失ってしまったことがありました。そのとき、たまたま訪問してくださった営業の方から『これを試してみては？』と試供品をいただきました。以前、獣医さんやラジオCMでその製品の話を聞いたことがあったので、試してみることにしたんです。使い始めると牛たちの調子が良くなり、うちのやり方にも合っていることが分かりました。このタイミングで取り入れたことが本当に良かったと思っています。すべてが巡り合わせで、感謝しかありません。」

Reporter: "Please tell us about the points that you are particularly particular about and the things that you have done to improve your farm."

Kitasaki: "We make it a point to always talk to our cows. We talk to them every hour, saying "Good morning" in the morning and "Thank you for your hard work today" in the evening. I think that talking to them in this way makes the cows feel safe and calm. In fact, other farmers often tell us that "Kitazaki's cows are so well-behaved," and I think that is our biggest selling point."

Reporter: "I see. Aside from talking to them and showing affection, are there any other things that you have done to improve your farm?"

Kitasaki: "I think that a big feature of our farm is that the cows are taken care of by women. By observing the cows with the attention to detail and perspective that only a woman can have, we are able to see the small things that they are not aware of." It also helps to notice any changes that may be occurring. This also helps to manage the health of the cows. The atmosphere in the barn is also more relaxed, and as a result, I think the cows are able to live without stress. I think this kind of careful consideration creates a good environment for raising the cows. ”


Reporter: “I heard that you also put a lot of effort into gathering information. How do you do this?”

Kitasaki: “When I have a problem, I think it’s important to consult with farmers and experts who have achieved success in the auction without feeling embarrassed. For example, I ask specific questions like, ‘How many kilograms of feed do you give?’ and ‘How do you mix it?’ It’s important to select the information that suits your farm and try it out first. I think that by accumulating successes and failures as experience, I can make use of it in farm management.”


Reporter: "Can you tell us about a recent example where your information gathering paid off?"

Kitasaki: "I once lost a calf that was anemic. At that time, a salesperson happened to visit us and gave us a sample, saying, 'Why don't you try this?' I had heard about the product from a veterinarian and on a radio commercial, so I decided to give it a try. When I started using it, the cows started to feel better, and I found that it suited our method of operation. I'm really glad that I started using it at that time. It was all fate, and I'm just grateful."

畑と牛の二刀流

記者「北﨑さんの牛の状態に点数をつけるとしたら、何点くらいだと思われますか？」​

北﨑さん「50点ですね。畜産と畑作の両方を手掛けているため、牛の管理に十分な時間を割けていないのが現状です。特に繁殖牛の場合、一年一産が基本とされていますが、それを達成できていないことが点数の低さに直結しています。また、発情の見逃しなどのミスもあり、牧場全体の管理不足を感じています。畑の作業に追われてしまい、どうしても牛にかける手間が不足している点が大きな課題ですね。」

記者「その50点を100点に近づけるためには、どのような改善が必要だと思いますか？」

北﨑さん「一つは、牛の頭数を減らすか、畑の作付面積を縮小することですね。牛と畑の管理を両立させるのは思った以上に大変なので、作業負担を軽減するための選択が必要だと思います。ただ、畑は牧場の経営を支える重要な部分なので、簡単には縮小できないというジレンマもあります。それ以外には、例えばカメラやセンサーを活用するなど、技術的な支援をもっと取り入れることで管理効率を上げる方法も考えています。」


記者「作業の効率化という点では、牧場でどのような工夫をされていますか？」

北﨑さん「牛舎自体は古いままですが、分娩時にはセンサーやカメラを活用して管理の精度を上げています。以前は夜中に何度も寒い中見回りをしていましたが、今はこれらの技術のおかげで見逃しがほとんどなくなりました。ただし、牛舎の改築など大きな投資は考えていません。その分、牛へのケアや必要な設備に重点的に投資しています。現状の設備でも、適切な補助ツールを取り入れることで、十分な管理ができていると思います。」


記者「北﨑さんが使われているアイテムや道具で、特におすすめのものがあれば教えてください。」

北﨑さん「最近はアソードという添加物を取り入れています。これを使用することで、分娩後の発情回帰が早くなり、子牛の立ち上がりも良くなったと感じています。また、牛舎特有の臭いが抑えられているのも大きな利点です。外部の方からも『臭いが少ない』とよく言われます。これは牧場環境を整えるうえでとても重要なポイントだと思っています。さらに、臭いが抑えられていることでハエの発生を抑え、直近で流行ってきているランピースキン病の媒介リスクも減少させる効果があるのではと思っています。」

Reporter: "If you were to give a score to the condition of your cows, how many would you say they are?"

Kitasaki: "50 points. Because you are involved in both livestock farming and field crops, you are unable to devote enough time to managing your cows. In particular, in the case of breeding cows, the basic rule is to produce one calf per year, but not being able to achieve this is directly linked to the low score. There are also mistakes such as overlooking estrus, and I feel that the management of the entire ranch is lacking. The fact that you are so busy working in the fields that you just can't spend enough time on your cows is a big issue."


Reporter: "I want to get that 50 points closer to 100 points. What improvements do you think are necessary to keep the farm running smoothly?"

Kitasaki: "One is to reduce the number of cows or the area of ​​land used for farming. Managing the cows and the fields at the same time is harder than you might think, so I think we need to make some choices to reduce the workload. However, the fields are an important part of supporting the farm's operations, so there is a dilemma that they cannot be easily reduced. Other than that, we are also considering ways to improve management efficiency by incorporating more technological support, such as using cameras and sensors."


Reporter: "In terms of improving work efficiency, what kind of improvements are being made at the farm? "

Kitasaki: "The barn itself is still old, but we use sensors and cameras at the time of calving to improve the accuracy of management. In the past, we had to patrol the barn many times in the cold at night, but now, thanks to these technologies, we hardly miss any. However, we are not considering making large investments such as renovating the barn. Instead, we are focusing on investing in care for the cows and the necessary equipment. Even with the current equipment, I think we can manage the cows sufficiently by incorporating appropriate auxiliary tools."


Reporter: "Are there any items or tools that you use that you would particularly recommend?"

Kitasaki: "Recently, we have been using an additive called Asode. I feel that by using this, the cows return to estrus more quickly after calving and the calves stand up better. Another major advantage is that the odor peculiar to the barn is suppressed. People outside often say that there is "little odor." I think this is a very important point in creating a ranch environment. Furthermore, I think that suppressing the odor will suppress the occurrence of flies and reduce the risk of transmission of Lumpy Skin Disease, which has recently become popular."

牛がいてくれるからこそ

記者「北﨑さんが目標にしている方や師匠と呼べる存在を教えてください。」

​北﨑さん「私が目標としているのは、中村八千代さんという女性の牛飼いの方です。彼女は一人で牛の世話をしているだけでなく、出荷する牛の質も非常に高いんです。特に足腰が丈夫で、体格も大きく、人懐っこい牛を育てる技術にはいつも感心させられています。市場では、もっと高く評価されてもいい牛だと思うほどです。さらに、お産や育成など、どんな状況にも冷静に対応される技術と牛に注ぐ深い愛情は、私にとって目標そのものです。」


記者「中村さんから教わったことで、特に印象的だったことは何ですか？」

北﨑さん「以前、子牛を続けて失ってしまい、落ち込んでいた時に中村さんに相談しました。すると『バケツ哺乳を試してみて』とアドバイスをいただいたんです。それまで哺乳瓶を使っていましたが、その言葉でバケツ哺乳を始めることにしました。その結果、哺乳の手間が省けただけでなく、子牛たちの成長もスムーズになりました。また、乳首の交換をマメにすることもアドバイスしていただき、それも実践しています。中村さんの言葉一つ一つが、私の牧場運営を大きく変えるきっかけになっています。」


記者「座右の銘についても教えていただけますか？」

北﨑さん「『田んぼの肥やしは人の足音』という言葉が私の座右の銘です。これは人が田んぼに何度も足を運ぶことで、作物の成長が良くなるという意味ですが、私はこれを牛に置き換えました。牛舎に頻繁に足を運び、牛たちを観察することで、健康状態や異常に気づく機会が増えます。それが結果として牛の成長や牧場全体の向上につながると思っています。観察と愛情を注ぐことが、良い牛を育てる鍵だと信じています。」


記者「牛一頭一頭の管理に対して、どのように取り組まれているのですか？」

北﨑さん「うちでは牛一頭一頭に名前を付けて、個別に声をかけるようにしています。それぞれの性格や特徴、血統まで覚えているので、『この牛はこの牛と一緒にすると相性が良い』といったことまで分かります。実際に獣医さんからも『よくそんなに覚えられますね』と驚かれることが多いです。スタンチョンではなく群飼をしているので、牛の性格を把握して適切に配置することが、健康管理にもつながっています。牛たちが喋らない分、観察から得られる情報が本当に大切だと思っています。」


記者「最後に、北﨑さんが一番伝えたいことを教えてください。」

北﨑さん「何よりもお伝えしたいのは、私たちの生活が牛のおかげで成り立っているという感謝の気持ちです。牛が好きだからこそ、この仕事を続けられていますし、毎日牛と一緒に生活できることを幸せに感じています。特に、口蹄疫などでやむを得ず牛を殺処分せざるを得なかった生産者さんのことを思うと、こうして牛たちと日々の生活を送れることがいかに恵まれているか、改めて感じます。価格に一喜一憂することなく、牛と共に過ごせる日常の幸せを忘れないようにしたいと思っています。牛がいてくれるからこそ、私たちは今の生活を送ることができています。牛と過ごす時間が本当に楽しくて、それが私の原動力になっています。どんな日でも、牛のためにできることを一つ一つ積み重ねていきたいです。」

Kitasaki: "My role model is a female cowherd called Nakamura Yachiyo. Not only does she take care of her cows by herself, but the quality of the cows she ships is also very high. I'm always impressed by her technique, which is to raise cows that are particularly strong in the legs, large in stature, and friendly. I think they deserve to be valued more highly in the market. Furthermore, her technique in calmly dealing with any situation, such as childbirth and raising, and the deep love she pours into her cows are my role model."


Reporter: "Nakamura What was the most memorable thing you learned from him? ”

Kitasaki: “I was feeling down after losing a lot of calves, so I consulted Nakamura. He advised me to try bucket feeding. I had been using bottles, but his advice made me decide to start bucket feeding. As a result, not only did I save time on feeding, but the calves also grew more smoothly. He also advised me to change the nipples more frequently, which I have been doing. Every single word Nakamura said had a big impact on how I run my farm. "


Reporter: "Could you tell us about your motto?"

Kitasaki: "My motto is, 'The fertilizer in the rice fields is the sound of people's footsteps.' This means that the more people visit the rice fields, the better the crops will grow, but I've translated this to cows. By visiting the cowshed frequently and observing the cows, I have more opportunities to notice their health and any abnormalities. I think that this will ultimately lead to the growth of the cows and the improvement of the entire farm. I believe that observation and love are the keys to raising good cows."


Reporter: "I care about each and every cow. How do you deal with this issue?"

Kitasaki: "We give each cow a name and speak to them individually. We remember their personalities, characteristics, and even their lineages, so we can tell things like, "This cow gets along well with this other cow." In fact, even the vets are often surprised that we can remember so much. We don't keep them in stanchions, but rather keep them in groups, so understanding their personalities and placing them appropriately also helps with health management. Since the cows don't talk, I think the information we get from observing them is really important. ”


Reporter: “Finally, please tell us what you most want to convey.”

Kitasaki: “Above all, I want to convey my gratitude that our lives are possible thanks to cows. I can continue this job because I love cows, and I feel happy to be able to live with cows every day. In particular, when I think of producers who have had to cull their cows due to foot-and-mouth disease and other reasons, I feel anew how blessed I am to be able to live my daily life with my cows. I want to try not to get too excited or upset about the price, and not forget the daily happiness of being able to spend time with my cows. It is because of the cows that we are able to live the life we ​​have now. I really enjoy spending time with the cows, and that is what motivates me. No matter what day it is, I want to keep doing what I can for the cows, one by one.”
