母牛の“本能”を信じる

記者「與那覇さんの牧場で大事にされている“こだわり”について教えてください。」

與那覇さん「うちでは何よりも、繁殖牛の運動をしっかりさせることを大切にしています。1年のうち半年は屋外の運動場で、残り半年は牛舎内で過ごさせています。運動させることで牛の健康を保てますし、特に繁殖牛は10年近く共に過ごす大切な母牛です。長く元気に働いてもらうには、丈夫な足腰が不可欠なんです。分娩にも体力が必要なので、健康な体づくりがスムーズな出産にもつながります。」


記者「分娩に立ち会って補助をするという話もよく聞きますが、與那覇さんの牧場では自然分娩が主流なんですか？」

與那覇さん「はい、できる限り自然に産ませるようにしています。人が無理に手を出すことで、母牛にも子牛にも余計な負担がかかることがあるからです。足を引っ張って子牛の足を骨折させてしまったり、母体に傷をつけてしまうこともある。だから、日頃から健康管理と運動をしっかり行い、自然な形で出産できるように準備しています。牛たちには本来の出産力があるので、それを信じて任せています。」


記者「運動以外に、牛との接し方で大切にしていることはありますか？」

與那覇さん「牛への声かけをすごく大切にしています。実験で、同じ食パンに毎日“ありがとう”と声をかけたものと、悪い言葉をかけたものでカビの生え方に違いが出たって話、ご存じですか？言葉は理解できなくても、感情はきっと伝わると思ってます。牛に“今日もありがとうね”って声をかけることで、心が通じ合う感覚があります。牛たちに愛情を伝える手段として、毎日意識して声をかけています。」


記者「現在の飼育頭数と牧場の運営体制を教えてください。」

與那覇さん「今は繁殖牛が25頭いて、父と私の2人で牧場をやっています。管理全般は私が担当していて、父は掃除や補助的な作業を手伝ってくれています。すべての牛に毎日声をかけるのは難しいですが、餌をあげるときには必ず一頭ずつ触れ合いながら声をかけています。手間はかかりますが、それだけ愛情も注げるし、牛との距離も縮まるんです。」

Reporter: "Please tell us about the "particulars" that you value at your farm."

Yonaha: "Above all, we value giving our breeding cows plenty of exercise. We keep them in an outdoor exercise area for half the year, and in the barn for the other half. Exercising helps keep the cows healthy, and breeding cows in particular are precious mother cows that we spend nearly 10 years with. Strong legs and hips are essential to keep them working healthily for a long time. Physical strength is also necessary for childbirth, so having a healthy body also leads to smooth childbirth."

Reporter: "I often hear that you attend and assist childbirth, but is natural childbirth the norm at your farm?"

Yonaha: "Yes, we try to make it as natural as possible. We make sure that the cows give birth in a natural way. If humans forcefully interfere with the cows, it can put unnecessary strain on both the mother and the calf. Sometimes they can drag the calf's legs and break the calf's legs, or injure the mother. That's why we take good care of their health and exercise them on a daily basis, and prepare them to give birth in a natural way. Cows have the natural ability to give birth, so we trust that and leave it to them."

Reporter: "Apart from exercise, is there anything else you value in how you interact with cows?"

Yonaha: "I really value speaking to cows. Did you know that in an experiment, the same bread that was said "thank you" every day showed a difference in the way mold grew on it compared to when it was said to be bad? Even if Yoh can't understand, I'm sure she can communicate my feelings. When I say "Thank you for today" to the cows, I feel like we're communicating with each other. I make a conscious effort to talk to them every day as a way of showing my affection to the cows."

Reporter: "Please tell us how many cows you currently have and how the farm is run."

Yonaha: "Right now we have 25 breeding cows, and my father and I run the farm together. I'm in charge of the overall management, and my father helps with cleaning and other auxiliary tasks. It's difficult to talk to all the cows every day, but when I feed them, I always talk to each one while touching them. It takes a lot of work, but it allows me to show my affection and brings me closer to the cows."

​人慣れ牛へのコミュニケーション術

記者「與那覇さんが育てている牛に点数をつけるとしたら、何点になりますか？」

與那覇さん「今のところは85点くらいですね。もっと高く評価したい気持ちもあるんですけど、実は分娩後の空胎期間と次の分娩までの間隔が少し長めなんです。これは牛の問題だけじゃなく、管理する私自身の課題でもあって、種付けのタイミングが後ろにずれがちなんです。そういった点から、今はまだ満点には届かないと感じています。」


記者「その85点の理由は、主に分娩後の管理の部分にあるということですが、どのような改善を目指していらっしゃいますか？」

與那覇さん「はい、やっぱり分娩の2～3ヶ月前からの栄養管理が重要になってくると感じていて、そこをもっとしっかりやっていきたいと思っています。今後は添加剤の活用や、どういう状態なら次の種付けまでスムーズにつながるのかといった点を勉強しながら、より計画的な繁殖管理に取り組んでいきたいですね。少しずつでも改善して、100点に近づけたいです。」


記者「ありがとうございます。では次に、與那覇さんがオススメする牧場のアイテムや道具はありますか？」

與那覇さん「私のおすすめは“金ぐし”ですね。みなさんご存知かもしれませんが、ブラッシングに使うあの金属製の道具です。牛の状態を確認したり、接触を通じて牛との距離を縮めるには最適なアイテムなんです。毎日全頭にはできませんが、今日はこの子、明日はあの子と、日々様子を見ながら使っています。牛が人に慣れるように、声をかけながら触れ合って、ストレスの少ない環境を意識してます。」


記者「やはり人に慣れている牛の方が、肥育農家さんのところへ行った後も管理しやすいですよね？」

與那覇さん「そうなんです。人に慣れていない牛はビクビクして、目の前で飼料を準備してもなかなか近づいて来なかったりします。そうすると飼い葉の食いにも影響が出てしまう。最終的に牛がどこへ行っても元気に過ごせるように、今のうちからしっかり人との距離感を作っておくことが大切だと思っています。」

Reporter: "If you were to give a score to the cows you raise, what would it be?"

Yonaha: "Right now, I'd give them about 85 points. I'd like to give them a higher rating, but the truth is that the gap between the empty period after calving and the next calving is a little long. This isn't just an issue with the cows, it's also an issue for me as the manager, and the timing of insemination tends to be delayed. Because of this, I don't think they've yet reached full marks."

Reporter: "You say the reason for the 85 points is mainly due to the management after calving, but what kind of improvements are you aiming for?"

Yonaha: "Yes, it's definitely the nutrition from 2-3 months before calving. I feel that management is important, and I want to work on that more thoroughly. In the future, I would like to study things like how to use additives and what conditions will lead to a smooth transition to the next breeding, and work on more planned breeding management. I would like to improve even a little at a time and get closer to 100 points. ”

Reporter: “Thank you. Next, are there any farm items or tools that you would recommend?”

Yonaha: “My recommendation is the ‘gold comb.’ As you may know, it is the metal tool used for brushing. It is the perfect item for checking the condition of the cows and getting closer to them through contact. I use it every day, all day, I can't keep it in my head, but I use them day by day, observing how they are doing, saying this one today, that one tomorrow. I talk to them and interact with them, and try to create a stress-free environment so that the cows get used to people.

Reporter: "After all, cows that are used to people are easier to manage after they go to the fattening farm, right?"

Yonaha: "That's right. Cows that aren't used to people are nervous, and even if you prepare feed in front of them, they don't come near. This affects how much they eat the feed. I think it's important to create a good distance from people from now on, so that the cows will be able to live happily wherever they go."

ヒールから長靴へ ― 元キャバ嬢が見つけた生き方

記者「與那覇さんが目標にされている方や、尊敬している“師匠”のような存在はどなたですか？」

與那覇さん「近所で『國吉畜産』という名前で牧場を営んでいる、國吉かなこさんという方です。かなこさんは大学卒業後すぐに就農され、20年近く繁殖農家として第一線で活躍されている女性なんです。4人のお子さんを育てながら仕事も続けていて、本当にすごいなと。女性でもここまでできるという姿を、身近で見せてくれている存在で、私にとってとても大きな目標です。」


記者「相談できる方が近くにいるのは、心強いですね。」

與那覇さん「本当にそうですね。経験も豊富なので、わからないことがあったときには相談させてもらっています。かなこさんは子牛をとても立派に育てられる方で、『どうしたらあんなに育つんだろう？』って思うくらいです。何かに迷ったときにも、『とりあえずやってみて、ダメだったら相談しよう』と思える存在がいるだけで、すごく安心できます。」


記者「與那覇さんご自身のこれまでのキャリアについても教えていただけますか？以前は全く別の業界にいらっしゃったと伺いました。」

與那覇さん「はい。実は以前はキャバクラで働いていました。話すこともお酒も好きだったので、その仕事も嫌ではなかったんですが、夜の仕事は自由がきく一方で、将来に対する不安や迷いもあったんです。そんなときに、父から“牧場手伝ってみる？”と声をかけられて、最初は軽い気持ちで始めました。」


記者「それが畜産業を始めるきっかけになったのですか？」

與那覇さん「はい。最初は本当に“お手伝い”という感覚だったんですが、牛と関わっているうちに、小さい頃の記憶がだんだん蘇ってきたんです。実は祖父も牧場をしていたので、動物と一緒にいる生活にはどこか懐かしさを感じて。『あ、私やっぱりこういう仕事が好きなんだな』って気づいて、気づけば“これを一生の仕事にしたい”と思うようになっていました。今では朝起きて牛の様子を見に行くのが、顔を洗ったり歯を磨いたりするのと同じ、自然な日課になっています。」


記者「素敵な気づきですね。では、與那覇さんの座右の銘についても教えてください。」

與那覇さん「私の座右の銘は『牛と私を信じる』です。牛を信じるというのは、健康をしっかり観察したうえで、命を育む力や出産する力を信頼するという意味です。必要以上に人が手を出すと、かえって牛にストレスをかけてしまうこともあります。だからこそ、“任せるべきところは任せる”という姿勢を大事にしています。」

記者「“私を信じる”という部分には、どんな思いがあるのでしょうか？」

與那覇さん「畜産業はまだまだ男性の多い世界なので、最初は『女性ひとりでは無理だよ』なんて声もたくさん聞きました。でも、私はこの仕事を一生やっていこうと決めています。もともと夜の仕事をしていて、全く違う世界にいた私にとっては大きな転身でした。でも、父の牧場を手伝ったことで、子どもの頃の感覚が戻ってきて、“やっぱり私は動物が好きなんだ”って思えたんです。今ではこの仕事は、仕事というより“生活の一部”。自分が選んだ道を信じて、これからも歩んでいきたいと思っています。」

Reporter: "Who is your role model, or someone you respect as your mentor?"

Yonaha: "It's Kuniyoshi Kanako, who runs a nearby farm called Kuniyoshi Livestock. Kanako started farming right after graduating from university, and has been a frontline breeding farmer for nearly 20 years. She's been working while raising four children, which I think is really amazing. She shows me up close that even women can do this much, and she's a big role model for me."

Reporter: "It's reassuring to have someone nearby you can consult with."

Yonaha: "That's true. She has a lot of experience, so when I don't understand something, I can ask her for advice. I have been working with her. Kanako is a person who raises calves so well that I wonder, "How can she raise them like that?" Even when I'm unsure about something, I feel very reassured just knowing that there is someone I can think, "I'll give it a try, and if it doesn't work, I'll consult with her."

Reporter: "Could you tell us about your own career so far? I heard that you were in a completely different industry before."

Yonaha: "Yes. Actually, I used to work in a cabaret club. I liked talking and drinking, so I didn't dislike the job, but while working at night gave me freedom, I also had worries and doubts about my future. At that time, my father asked me, "Why don't you try helping out on the farm? " I was asked to join the cattle farm, and at first I started without much thought."

Reporter: "Was that what prompted you to start the livestock industry?"

Yonaha: "Yes. At first I really just felt like I was helping out, but as I worked with the cattle, memories from my childhood gradually came back to me. My grandfather also ran a farm, so I felt a certain nostalgia for being with animals. I realized, "Oh, I really do like this kind of work," and before I knew it, I thought, "I want to do this for the rest of my life." Now, waking up in the morning and going to check on the cattle has become a natural daily routine, just like washing my face and brushing my teeth."

Reporter: "That's a wonderful realization. So, please tell us about your motto."

Yonaha: "My motto is 'Believe in the cattle and in myself.' Believing in the cattle means that I trust their power to nurture life and give birth after carefully observing their health. I don't want to give them more than necessary. If humans get involved, it can end up stressing the cows. That's why I value the attitude of "leaving others to do what they should."

Reporter: "What do you mean when you say 'trust me'?"

Yonaha: "The livestock industry is still a male-dominated world, so at first I heard a lot of people say, 'A woman can't do it alone.' But I've decided to do this job for the rest of my life. I used to work at night, so it was a big change for me, who was in a completely different world. But helping out at my father's farm brought back the feelings I had as a child, and I realized, 'I really love animals.' Now this job is more like a part of my life than a job. I want to continue walking the path I've chosen, believing in it."
