母のちからで育つ牛

記者「上別府さんの牛飼いとしてのこだわりについて教えていただけますか？」

上別府さん「うちは“自然哺育”を大切にしていて、できるだけ母乳で育てることにこだわっています。具体的には、4ヶ月間しっかり母乳を飲ませながら育てる自然哺育を実施しています。今の主流は2ヶ月で早期離乳するところが多いですが、うちではあえて長くすることで、ストレスが少なく、健康な子牛に育ってくれると感じています。離乳後の発熱や食欲不振も減ってきたので、うちにとってはこの方法がベストだと思っています。」


記者「早期離乳のリスクについても話題になりますが、上別府さんのところではどう対策されているんですか？」

上別府さん「確かに親に踏まれるなどの事故リスクから早期離乳が流行ったこともありました。でもうちは1ヶ月ほど親子だけで過ごす時間を設けて、その後、似た月齢の4頭を1グループにして“生乳哺育”に切り替えています。お母さんが餌を食べてる間に授乳させ、それ以外は子牛部屋で過ごさせるんです。これで事故のリスクを最小限にしながら、母乳育ちの良さを活かせるようにしています。」


記者「かなり手間のかかる育て方かと思いますが、大規模経営の中でそれを実践されているのは珍しいですね。」

上別府さん「そうなんですよ。うちは繁殖牛340頭ほどいて、その中で自然哺育をやるには分娩室の数や人手も必要です。正直手間はかかります。でも人工哺育って自分があまり得意じゃなくて…。ミルク代もかかりますし、朝夕必ずやらないといけない。お母さん牛の代わりはできないと思うんです。だからこそ、手間をかけても自然哺育にこだわっています。」

記者「子牛の健康管理も徹底されていると聞きましたが、どのように行っているんでしょうか？」

上別府さん「生まれてから3ヶ月間が勝負だと思っているので、毎日全頭の検温と検便をしています。特に自然哺育だと、子牛が不調でもお母さんにくっついているので気づきにくいんですよ。だからこそ、毎日必ず全員チェック。今はスタッフで分担してやっているので、時間もそんなにかからず、1時間以内で終わります。子牛も慣れていて、寝たままでも体温測れますし、便も出してくれるので助かっています。」

Reporter: "Could you tell us about your particular concerns as a cowherd?"

Kamibeppu: "We value "natural feeding" and are particular about breastfeeding as much as possible. Specifically, we practice natural feeding, where the calves are breastfed for four months. The mainstream now is early weaning at two months, but we deliberately wean them longer, which we feel results in less stress and healthier calves. We have also seen fewer fevers and loss of appetite after weaning, so we think this method is the best for us."

Reporter: "People often talk about the risks of early weaning, but how do you deal with this at your place?"

Kamibeppu: "It's true that early weaning was once popular due to the risk of accidents such as being stepped on by the parent. But we allow the parent and child to spend about a month alone together, and then we wean them at a similar age. We put four cows in a group and switched to “raw milk feeding.” They nurse while their mother is eating, and spend the rest of the time in the calf room. This minimizes the risk of accidents while still taking advantage of the benefits of breastfeeding.”

Reporter: “It must be a very time-consuming way of raising the calves, but it’s rare to see it practiced in a large-scale operation.”

Kamibeppu: “That’s right. We have about 340 breeding cows, and to raise them naturally we need a number of delivery rooms and manpower. To be honest, it takes a lot of work. But I’m not very good at artificial feeding… It costs money for milk, and you have to do it every morning and evening. I don’t think you can replace the mother cow. That’s why we insist on natural feeding, even though it takes a lot of work.”

Reporter: “I heard that you also take thorough care of the calves’ health, but how do you do it? ?"

Kamibeppu: "I think the first three months are crucial, so I take the temperature and stool of all the calves every day. Especially with natural rearing, it's hard to notice if the calves are sick because they're attached to their mothers. That's why I make sure to check them all every day. Now, the staff divides the work among themselves, so it doesn't take that much time, and it's done within an hour. The calves are used to it, so we can take their temperature while they're lying down, and they pass stool, so it's very helpful."

母体から始まる命のバトン

記者「上別府さんが育てている牛の状態について、点数をつけるなら何点でしょうか？」

上別府さん「うーん、今は80点くらいですかね。やっぱり地元には尊敬する先輩方がいらっしゃって、まだその域には達していないなと感じてます。でも、毎日スタッフみんなで愛情込めて育ててるし、発育にばらつきはあっても、小さい子も含めて手をかけて育てている自負があります。その気持ちがあるからこその80点です。」


記者「その80点の理由として、特に評価している点はどこになるんでしょうか？」

上別府さん「やっぱり一番は“手をかけている”ってところですね。毎日の検温・検便はもちろん、競り前にはしっかりブラッシングして、どこに出しても恥ずかしくない状態に仕上げています。他の人に触られても驚かないような、人に慣れた牛づくりを心がけています。健康状態もよく、無駄な脂肪がつかないようにも調整しています。」


記者「逆に、あと20点分の伸びしろ、課題と感じている部分はどこですか？」

上別府さん「やっぱり母体の管理ですね。子牛が生まれてからだけじゃなくて、生まれる前の母牛の状態をどう整えるかが課題です。自家製の牧草を使ってますが、天候や季節で質にばらつきがある。そこが安定すれば、もっと良い子が生まれるはず。今年からはミキサーを導入して、飼料を毎回一定のバランスで混ぜて与えられるようにしています。まだ始めたばかりですが、改善につながると信じてます。」


記者「おすすめアイテムについても教えていただけますか？」

上別府さん「まずは“電動台車”ですね。濃厚飼料を運ぶのに使っていて、600キロまで運べて、ボタンひとつで前後に動きます。女性スタッフが多いので、力仕事の負担を減らすためには欠かせません。あとは“キックボード”。広い牛舎内の移動に使ってて、音も静かで牛を驚かせないし、忘れ物を取りに行くのにも便利。さらにフォークリフトも重宝してます。子牛を1度に4頭移動できるので、市場出荷のときも効率的。すべては『少人数でもしっかり牛を見られる体制づくり』のために導入しています。」

Reporter: "If you had to rate the condition of the cows you're raising, how many points would you give them?"

Kamibeppu: "Hmm, I'd say about 80 points right now. There are seniors in my hometown that I respect, and I feel like I haven't reached that level yet. But the staff raise them with love every day, and even though there are variations in their growth, they take good care of them, even the small ones." I am proud of the way I raise them. It is because of that feeling that I have given them 80 points."

Reporter: "What do you particularly value as the reason for the 80 points?"

Kamibeppu: "The most important thing is that they are well looked after. In addition to taking their temperature and stool tests every day, we brush them thoroughly before auctioning so that they are in good condition to be taken out anywhere. We try to raise cows that are used to people and are not surprised when other people touch them. We also make sure that they are in good health and do not put on unnecessary fat."

Reporter: "On the other hand, where do you feel there is room for improvement or a challenge to be addressed, to get another 20 points?"

Kamibeppu: "It is definitely the management of the mother's body. The challenge is not only how to improve the condition of the mother cow before the calf is born, but also how to improve the condition of the mother cow before the calf is born. We use home-grown pasture, but the quality varies depending on the weather and season. If we can stabilize that, we will be able to raise more cows. If we do that, we should be able to produce good calves. Starting this year, we've installed a mixer so that we can mix the feed in a consistent balance every time we give it to them. We've only just started, but we believe it will lead to improvements."

Reporter: "Can you tell us about some of your recommended items?"

Kamibeppu: "First of all, the electric cart. We use it to transport concentrated feed, and it can carry up to 600 kg, and it moves back and forth with the push of a button. We have a lot of female staff, so it's essential to reduce the burden of heavy labor. Then there's the kick scooter. We use it to move around the large barn, it's quiet so it doesn't startle the cows, and it's also convenient for picking up things you've forgotten. We also find the forklift very useful. It can move four calves at a time, so it's efficient when shipping them to market. We installed all of these to "create a system where even a small number of people can keep a close eye on the cows."

“女のくせに”を力に変えて

記者「上別府さんの師匠や目標にされている方について教えていただけますか？」

上別府さん「はい、私の師匠は地元で一番大きな農場を経営されている、平松畜産の社長です。何がすごいって、自分が経験して得た知識を惜しまず教えてくださるんです。牛のことはもちろん、経営のこと、お金の借り方や餌の組み方、さらには牛舎の設計や建設に至るまで全部サポートしてもらいました。最初に牧場を立ち上げる時は本当に何も分からなくて不安でしたけど、社長のアドバイスがあったから今があります。」

記者「すごく頼りになる存在ですね。」

上別府さん「はい、今でもお付き合いがあります。規模は全然違いますが、同じように一歩ずつ拡大していこうという気持ちは共通していて、よく情報交換させてもらってます。スタート時に目標設定の仕方や資金計画まで一緒に考えてもらったので、今の経営の土台は本当に社長のおかげだと思っています。」


記者「上別府さんの座右の銘を教えていただけますか？」

上別府さん「“これが私の生きる道”ですね。最初は周りから“女のくせにできるわけない”とか言われたこともありましたけど、自分で選んだ道だし、今はまったく後悔していません。牛飼いって昔は恥ずかしい職業って思われがちでしたけど、今は若い子たちがSNSを通して楽しそうに発信してくれて、それを見るのがすごくうれしいです。生涯この仕事を楽しんでいきたいし、自分の道を信じて歩いていきたいと思っています。」


記者「その姿勢が他の若手にも影響を与えているんですね。最後に上別府さんが実行委員長を務められている"全国モーモー母ちゃんの集い"について教えてください。」

上別府さん「そうなんです。最初は正直、“私なんて”って思ってましたけど、前回の島根大会で“鹿児島が引き受けてくれないとこの会は終わる”と言われて、これは何とかしなきゃと決意しました。この集いとの出会いも大きくて、沖縄大会では大分の本川牧場の社長さんの話を聞いて、“借金は悪いことじゃない、必要なら借りて返せばいい”という考え方に衝撃を受けました。私も最初は借金にすごく抵抗がありましたが、その考えが背中を押してくれたんです。私自身、この集いに参加したことで大きな影響を受けたので、もっとたくさんの人にこの機会を届けたいですね。何より、普段は出会えないような仲間たちと繋がれる貴重な場なんです。締め切りは4月10日になっていますが4月中であれば申込対応できますので、ぜひ多くの方に知ってもらえたら嬉しいです。」

Reporter "Could you tell us about your mentor and role model?"

Kamibeppu: "Yes, my mentor is the president of Hiramatsu Livestock, the largest farm in the area. What's amazing is that he generously shares the knowledge he gained from his experience with me. He supported me with everything from cows to management, how to borrow money, how to feed the animals, and even the design and construction of the cowshed. When I first started the farm, I didn't know anything and was anxious, but I am where I am today thanks to the advice of the president."

Reporter: "He's a very reliable person."

Kamibeppu: "Yes, we still keep in touch. Our scales are completely different, but we share the same desire to expand step by step, and we often exchange information. He helped me think about how to set goals and even financial plans when we started, so I think he's really helped me with my current management. I really think that I owe my foundation to my president."

Reporter: "What is your motto ?"

Kamibeppu: "This is my way of life. At first, people around me would say things like, 'You're just a woman, there's no way you can do that,' but it's the path I chose, and I don't regret it at all now. Cattle farming used to be considered a shameful job, but now young people are enjoying it and posting about it on social media, and it makes me really happy to see that. I want to enjoy this job for the rest of my life, and I want to walk my own path with faith."

Reporter: "That attitude is influencing other young people, isn't it? Finally, please tell us about the "National Moo Moo Moms Gathering," of which you are the executive committee chairman."

Kamibeppu: "That's right. To be honest, at first I thought, 'I'm just not good enough,' but at the last Shimane convention, "If Kagoshima doesn't take it on, this meeting will end," I was told, and I decided that I had to do something about it. My encounter with this gathering was also a big one. At the Okinawa conference, I heard the president of Honkawa Farm in Oita speak, and I was shocked by his idea that "debt is not a bad thing, if necessary, you can borrow and pay it back." At first, I was also very resistant to debt, but that idea gave me a push. I myself was greatly influenced by participating in this gathering, so I would like to share this opportunity with more people. Above all, it is a valuable place to connect with friends that you would not normally meet.
