牛と向き合う日々

記者「村田さんの牧場では、どのようなこだわりを持って牛を育てていますか？」

村田さん「やはり一番のこだわりは“一貫経営”ですね。繁殖から肥育までを一貫して行うことで、牛の成長を最初から最後まで見守ることができます。私は主に繁殖を担当していて、子牛の誕生から成長までを間近で感じられるのがやりがいです。生まれたときは本当に小さかった子が、すくすく育って、肥育牛として父や兄のもとへ行く頃には私の背丈ほどに大きくなります。その変化を見られるのが、この仕事の魅力の一つですね。また、私は受精師の資格を持っているので、人工授精を行うこともあります。自分がつけた種から生まれた子牛は、特別な愛着が湧きますね。我が子のような気持ちになることもあります。」


記者「村田さんの牧場では、子牛育成に関して“親付け”を採用しているそうですね。そのメリットについて教えてください。」

村田さん「親と一緒に育てることで、子牛が自然に親の食べている餌に興味を持ち、偏食しにくくなります。また、成長のスピードも早いように感じますね。母子分離を行っているところもありますが、病気の有無にもよりますが、うちの子牛と比べると少し小柄なことが多いように思います。
それに、母乳で育ち沢山お母さんから舐めてもらえることで免疫力が高まり、健康的に育ちやすいです。ただし、親と一緒にいることで怪我のリスクもあります。親牛が踏んでしまうことがないように、牛舎の環境を工夫したり、子牛の様子をしっかり観察したりすることが重要ですね。母乳の質にも気を配り、親牛の健康管理も徹底しています。」


記者「母子分離と比べたときの違いはどんなところにありますか？」

村田さん「私はミルクを手哺乳で飲ませる際は温度に気を配っていて、基本ミルクの温度は38.9から40°Cと教わりました。
飲み方が下手な子がいたり、乳首の違いが嫌で飲んでくれなかったりした時は結構温度も下がるはずなので焦ります。逆に温度を高くしてしまえば子牛の火傷の原因にもなります。その点母乳は温度もお母さんの体温と同じくらいで下がることもなく適温です。人工乳の場合、場合よっては一度に多くの子牛に与えるため、ミルクの温度管理が難しく、後半に飲む子は冷めてしまうこともあります。その点、親付けではお母さんに任せることで、自然なリズムで授乳ができ、子牛の健康状態も安定しやすいです。もちろん、親牛の乳量が不足したり、子牛がうまく飲めない場合は補助も必要になりますが、基本的には親に任せるほうが無理なく育てられると感じています。」


記者「牧場での観察が大切だということですが、どんなところに特に気をつけていますか？」

村田さん「私は農業大学校時代から『観察を怠るな』と教えられてきましたし、研修先でも毎日徹底するように言われました。牛舎を回るときは、まず耳の垂れ具合や目のくぼみ、糞の状態をチェックします。それに加えて、私は呼吸の速さも見るようにしています。人間でも走った後に息が上がることがありますよね。牛も同じで、呼吸が荒くなっていたり、肩で息をしているときは、何か異変があるサインかもしれません。親牛の場合は、餌の食べ方や発情の有無も重要です。発情期に無理に乗られて怪我をすることもあるので、危険がないように気を配っています。日々の観察をしっかり行うことで、小さな異変にも早く気づき、牛たちの健康を守ることができるんです。」

Reporter: "What kind of commitments do you have when raising cattle at your farm, Mr. Murata?"

Murata: "Our biggest commitment is, of course, "integrated management." By doing everything from breeding to fattening, we can watch the growth of the cattle from start to finish. I'm mainly in charge of breeding, and it's rewarding to be able to see the calves from birth to growth up close. The calves are really tiny when they're born, but they grow up quickly, and by the time they go to their father and brother as fattening cattle, they're as tall as me. Being able to see that change is one of the attractions of this job. I'm also a qualified fertilizer technician, so Because the calves are raised with their own eggs, they are sometimes artificially inseminated. You feel a special attachment to the calves that are born from the seeds you planted. You can even feel like they are your own children.

Reporter: "I heard that at your farm, you raise calves with their mothers. What are the benefits of this?"

Murata: "By raising them with their mothers, the calves naturally become interested in the food their parents eat, and are less likely to become picky eaters. They also seem to grow faster. Some farms separate their calves from their mothers, but compared to our calves, it depends on whether they have any illnesses or not, but the maturity rate is less. They tend to be small and small. Also, being breastfed and getting lots of licking from their mothers boosts their immunity and makes it easier for them to grow up healthy. However, being with their mother also increases the risk of injury. It is important to carefully monitor the condition of the cowshed and to prevent the mother from stepping on the calf. We also pay attention to the quality of the breast milk and thoroughly manage the health of the mother cows.

Reporter: "What are the differences compared to mother-child separation?"

Murata: "When I hand-feed my calves, I pay attention to the temperature, and I usually keep the temperature of the milk at a constant level." I was taught that the temperature should be 38.9 to 40°C. When some calves are not good at drinking, or refuse to drink because they dislike the difference in the nipple, the temperature should drop quite a bit, so I get anxious. On the other hand, if the temperature is too high, it can cause the calf to get burned. In that respect, breast milk is at the same temperature as the mother's body temperature and does not drop, so it is at the right temperature. With artificial milk, it is sometimes difficult to control the temperature of the milk because many calves are given it at once, and the calves that drink it later may get cold. In that respect, by leaving it to the mother, the calf can be breastfed at a natural rhythm and the health of the calf is more likely to be stable. Of course, assistance is necessary if the parent cow does not produce enough milk or the calf cannot drink well, but I feel that it is basically easier to raise the calf by leaving it to the parent. ”

Reporter: “You said that observation on the farm is important, but what do you pay particular attention to?”

Murata: “I was taught from my days at the agricultural college to never neglect observation, and I was told to do so thoroughly every day at my training site. When I go around the cowshed, I first check how the ears droop, the hollows in the eyes, and the condition of the feces. In addition to that, I try to check the speed of breathing. Even humans can get out of breath after running. The same goes for cows, and if they start breathing heavily or are breathing heavily, it could be a sign that something is wrong. In the case of parent cows, I check how they eat their feed, Whether or not the cows are in heat is also important. If the cows are forced to ride during the heat season, they can get injured, so we take great care to ensure that they are not in danger. By carefully observing the cows every day, we can quickly notice even the smallest abnormalities and protect the health of the cows. ”

牛たちのためにできること

記者「村田さんの牛の状態に点数をつけるなら、何点ですか？」

村田さん「もし私個人の評価なら100点をつけたいですが、実際にはまだまだ改善の余地がありますね。私は今、職場に勤めながら家の手伝いをしている立場なので、牧場全体の経営として考えると、自分の点数は70点くらいかなと思います。ちょっと盛ってるかもしれませんけど（笑）。牛たち自体の状態は良いですが、経営全体を見渡すとまだ課題も多いんです。だから、全体の評価としてはもう少し低めかもしれませんね。」


記者「70点という自己評価ですが、その理由を詳しく教えてください。」

村田さん「ポジティブな面で言えば、うちの牛たちは仲が良いんです。年齢を重ねたお母さん牛の中にはちょっと気の強い子もいますが、基本的には子育て上手な牛が多くて、新入りのママ牛が入ってきたときも、なんとなく優しく接しているように見えます。まるで“ママ友”みたいな関係ですね（笑）。あと、私は受精卵移植と人工授精の免許を持っているんですが、人工授精の成功率が安定してきました。今のところ、今年生まれる予定の子牛は30頭ほど。受精卵移植もまだ始めたばかりですが、初めて成功したのがすごく嬉しくて、そこは評価したいポイントですね。」


記者「では、今の70点を100点に近づけるために、改善すべきポイントはどこでしょう？」

村田さん「一番の課題は“堆肥の管理”ですね。もともと堆肥舎が4カ所あったんですが、牛舎の改造などで今は2カ所しかなく、堆肥が溜まりやすくなっています。いざ散布しようと思っても、時期が限られていて、すぐに処理できないんです。土地の状況にも左右されるので、どうにかうまく循環させる方法を模索中ですね。堆肥の問題が解決できれば、経営全体のスムーズさが増して、100点に近づけるのかなと思います。」


記者「堆肥の活用が難しいということですが、戻し堆肥などの方法は考えていますか？」

村田さん「今のところ、うちでは戻し堆肥の活用はやっていません。戻し堆肥を作るには、発酵を促すための設備が必要なんですが、まだその技術や環境が整っていないんです。戻し堆肥をうまく活用できるようになれば、堆肥の処理もスムーズになりますし、牛舎の環境改善にもつながるので、今後の課題として考えています。」


記者「牛の管理をする上で、こだわりのアイテムなどはありますか？」

Reporter: “If you were to rate the condition of your cows, how many points would you give them?”

Murata: “If I were to personally rate them, I would give them 100 points, but there is still room for improvement. I currently work at a company and help out at home, so in terms of the management of the entire farm, I would give myself about 70 points. I may be exaggerating a bit though (laughs). The cows themselves are in good condition, but looking at the whole business, there are still many issues to address. So, the overall assessment may be a little lower.

Reporter: "You gave yourself a score of 70. Can you explain the reasons in detail?"

Murata: "On the positive side, our cows get along well. Some of the older mother cows are a little stubborn, but generally most of them are good at raising their children, and even when new mother cows come in, they seem to be gentle with them. They have a relationship like that of "mother friends." I'm in charge of compost management (laughs). Also, I have licenses for embryo transfer and artificial insemination, and the success rate of artificial insemination has stabilized. As of now, about 30 calves are due to be born this year. We've only just started embryo transfer, but I'm very happy that it was the first successful one, so that's something I want to commend you for. 」

Reporter: "So, what do you think needs to be improved to get closer to 100 points from the current 70 points?"

Murata: "The biggest challenge is compost management. We used to have four compost sheds, but now we only have two because of remodeling the cowshed, so compost is easily piling up. Even if we want to spread it, there is a limited time, so we can't process it right away. It also depends on the condition of the land, so we're trying to find a way to circulate it well. If we can solve the compost problem, I think the overall management will become smoother and we'll be able to get closer to 100 points. ”

Reporter: “You said it’s difficult to utilize compost, but have you considered using it as return compost or other methods?”

Murata: “At the moment, we are not using return compost. To make return compost, you need equipment to promote fermentation, but we don’t have the technology or the environment yet. If we can make good use of return compost, it will make compost processing smoother and also improve the environment in the cowshed, so we are considering this as a future issue.”

Reporter: “Are there any items you are particular about when managing your cows?”

Murata: “I use a vitamin supplement called ‘Neo Drink’. I use Link regularly. I learned about it by chance while I was studying at the University of Agriculture, and when I tried it out, I noticed a huge difference in the energy of the cows. I was particularly surprised when I gave it to a calf that had diarrhea, and it recovered enough to run around the next day. 記者「村田さんにとって、師匠や目標にしている方はどなたですか？」

村田さん「ずっと話の中に出てきていますが、やはりおじいちゃんとお父さん、そして隠れた師匠としておばあちゃんもいますね。おじいちゃんは昔から牧場を支えてきた存在で、受精師の免許も持っています。私は本で勉強して人工授精を学びましたが、なかなかうまくいかなくて……。でも、おじいちゃんに教わったやり方で試したら、種付きの成功率がぐんと上がったんです。牛への負担も少ない方法で、まさに職人技でした。おじいちゃんはいつも穏やかで、私が自己肯定感が低くて悩むときも、のほほんと『大丈夫よ』と言ってくれるんです。私もそんな風に落ち着いて物事を見られるようになりたいですね。」


記者「お父様はどのような存在ですか？」

村田さん「お父さんは、私がやりたいことをいつも応援してくれる人です。私が『この薬を試してみたい』『こういうことをやりたい』と言うと、『いいんじゃない？』とすぐに背中を押してくれます。実は、高校時代に牧場を手伝ううちに、畜産の世界に興味を持つようになり、少しですが獣医を目指した時期もありました。ですが自分の努力が足らず断念しました。でも獣医は無理でも、牛の健康をしっかり管理しながら獣医さんと連携できる存在になりたいと思いました。そう思ったのも、お父さんの『お前のやりたいようにやれ』という言葉があったからです。お父さんは牛を見る目がとても鋭く、目利きが素晴らしいんですよ。『この牛はいい』『この牛はちょっとダメ』と一瞬で判断するんですが、その通りに育つんです。さらに、牛の治療の際は、まるで忍者のように気配を消して牛を捕まえるんです（笑）。私は牛と追いかけっこしてしまうのに、お父さんは一瞬で捕まえる。そこも本当に尊敬するところですね。」


記者「おばあ様についても教えてください。」

村田さん「おばあちゃんは、牧場の“裏の大黒柱”です。牛を直接世話しているわけではないのに、私たち以上に牛のことをよく見ていて、『あの牛、いつもと様子が違うよ』と教えてくれることもあります。しかも、家のこともすべてこなしてくれて、私たちが牧場に集中できるのは、おばあちゃんのおかげなんです。私たちが機械に乗って餌を作っているのに、『あれはこう動かしたらいいんじゃない？』なんてアドバイスをくれたりして、どうしてそんなに詳しいの！？と思うこともあります（笑）。本当に、おばあちゃんがいなかったら牧場は成り立たないですね。」


記者「最後に、村田さんの座右の銘を教えてください。」

村田さん「『笑う門には福来たる』ですね。私は昔からツボが浅くて、静かな場所でも誰かの何気ない一言で爆笑してしまうんです（笑）。中学時代に友達が書道で『笑門来福」と書いていたのを見て、この言葉がすごく心に残りました。それ以来、ずっと大切にしている言葉です。どんなに辛いことがあっても、笑っていると不思議と誰かが支えてくれるし、物事もうまく回る気がします。例えば、駐車場の大渋滞でどこも停められないときに、私の前だけ急にスペースが空く、なんてことがよくあるんです。スピリチュアルな話ではないですが、笑顔でいることで牛の成績も上がる気がするんですよね。だからこそ、どんなときも笑顔を大切にしています。」

Reporter: "Mr. Murata, who is your mentor or someone you aspire to be like?"

Murata: "As you've mentioned throughout the story, there's my grandpa and my dad, and also my grandma, who is my hidden mentor. My grandpa has been supporting the ranch for a long time, and he's a licensed inseminator. I studied artificial insemination from books, but it didn't work very well... But when I tried the method my grandpa taught me, the success rate of insemination went up dramatically. It's a method that puts less strain on the cows, and it was truly a work of art. My grandpa is always calm, and even when I'm struggling with low self-esteem, he just says, 'It's okay,' in a relaxed manner. I want to be able to calm down like that too. I want to be able to see things from a different perspective. ”

Reporter: “What kind of person is your father?”

Murata: “My father is someone who always supports what I want to do. When I say, ‘I want to try this medicine,’ or ‘I want to do this,’ he immediately encourages me, saying, ‘Isn’t that a good idea?’ In fact, while helping out on the farm during my high school years, I became interested in the world of livestock farming, and for a time I thought about becoming a veterinarian. However, I gave up because I didn’t put in enough effort. But even if I couldn’t become a veterinarian, I wanted to be someone who could work with veterinarians while managing the health of cows. The reason I thought this was because my father told me, ‘Do what you want to do.’ My father has a very sharp eye for cows, and he has a great eye for them. He can instantly decide whether ‘this cow is good’ or ‘this cow is not so good,’ and they grow up just like that. Furthermore, when treating the cows, he can stealthily catch the cows like a ninja (laughs). I end up chasing the cows, but my father can catch them in an instant. I really respect that about him. ”

Reporter: “Please tell us about your grandmother.”

Murata: “Grandma is the “backbone” of the farm. Even though she doesn’t take care of the cows directly, she keeps a closer eye on them than we do, and sometimes she’ll tell us things like, ‘That cow looks different than usual.’ She also takes care of all the household chores, and it’s thanks to her that we can concentrate on the farm. Even when we’re using machines to make feed, she gives us advice like, ‘Why don’t you move that like this?’ and I sometimes wonder how she knows so much! (laughs). Really, the farm wouldn’t work without Grandma.”

Reporter: “Finally, please tell us your motto.”

Murata: “‘Good fortune comes to those who smile.’ I’ve always been a bit shallow, and even in quiet places, I’ll burst out laughing at a casual comment someone makes (laughs). When I was in middle school, I saw a friend write ‘Laughter brings good fortune’ in calligraphy, and it really stuck with me. Since then, it’s a phrase I’ve treasured. No matter how hard things are, if I smile, I feel like someone will mysteriously support me and things will go well. For example, when the parking lot is jammed and I can't find anywhere, a space suddenly opens up in front of me. It's not a spiritual story, but I feel like smiling improves the performance of the cows. That's why I always value smiling. "
