牛と生きる島・黒島─自然と共存する畜産の知恵

記者「鈴木さんの牧場や黒島でのこだわりについてお聞かせください。」

鈴木さん「黒島の一番の特徴はやはり温暖な気候です。一年中暖かいので、頑張れば一年に5回ほど牧草の収穫ができる環境なんです。牛たちは広々とした牧草地で元気に走り回っていますし、土地に恵まれているからこそ健康で丈夫な牛が育つんです。ただ、日差しが強く、台風も頻繁に来るので、牛の体調管理にはとても気を使っています。この温暖で広大な環境を活かしながら、牛たちがストレスなく過ごせる工夫を心がけていますね。」


記者「黒島という場所に初めて触れる方も多いと思いますが、人口や牛の頭数について教えていただけますか？」

鈴木さん「黒島には現在220名ほどの人が暮らしていて、牛は約3,500頭飼育されています。人口の10倍以上の牛がいるんですよ。これだけ牛の割合が多い地域は全国でも珍しいと思いますね。黒島は地図で見ると台湾に近い位置にあります。島全体で牛と共に暮らしているような感覚で、人々の生活と牛の飼育が密接に結びついている場所です。」


記者「黒島は台風が多い地域とも聞きますが、被害などはどういった形で影響するのでしょうか？」

鈴木さん「そうですね、台風の被害は毎年覚悟しています。一番多いのは牛舎の屋根が飛ばされることです。幸いなことに、柱や基礎部分はコンクリートでしっかり作られているので壊れることはないのですが、屋根は風で飛んでしまいます。それでも私たちは風の強さに合わせて、風除けを設置したり、牛たちが群れて雨風をしのげる環境を作っています。自然の中で共に暮らす以上、すべてを完全に防ぐことはできませんが、その分牛も人もたくましくなっていると思います。」


記者「黒島のような離島では、エサや添加剤、必要な道具を取り寄せる際に送料がかなり高くなると思います。そういったコストを抑えるための工夫などはされていますか？」

鈴木さん「そうですね、これはもう離島ならではの大きな課題です。特にエサに関しては、どうしても必要なものなので送料がかかるのは避けられません。ただ、添加剤や備品などは個別で頼むとコストがかさむので、生産組合を活用してまとめて注文するようにしています。また、石垣島のエサ屋さんと相談して、島の畜産農家全体で一括して仕入れることで、送料の負担をできるだけ軽くしています。個人では難しいことも、みんなで協力すれば解決できるんですよね。」

Reporter: "Please tell us about your farm and the things you do on Kuroshima."

Suzuki: "The most distinctive feature of Kuroshima is the warm climate. It's warm all year round, so if you work hard, you can harvest grass about five times a year. The cows run around happily in the spacious pastures, and it's because we have such blessed land that we can raise healthy, strong cows. However, the sun is strong and we get frequent typhoons, so we pay close attention to managing the cows' health. We take advantage of this warm, vast environment and try to find ways to help the cows live stress-free."

Reporter: "Kuroshima is a place where you can enjoy the warm weather and the weather." Many people will be visiting the island for the first time, so could you tell us about its population and the number of cattle? "

Mr. Suzuki: "Currently, about 220 people live on Kuroshima, and about 3,500 cattle are raised. There are more than 10 times as many cattle as people. I think it's rare to have such a high proportion of cattle in the whole country. If you look at the map, Kuroshima is located close to Taiwan. It feels like the whole island is living with cattle, and it's a place where people's lives and cattle raising are closely linked."

Reporter: "I've heard that Kuroshima is an area where typhoons are common, but what about damage and other issues? How does it affect the environment?"

Suzuki: "Yes, we prepare for damage from typhoons every year. The most common thing is that the roof of the cowshed is blown away. Fortunately, the pillars and foundations are made of solid concrete and do not break, but the roof is blown away by the wind. Even so, we set up windbreaks according to the strength of the wind and create an environment where the cows can gather together to protect themselves from the rain and wind. Since we live together in nature, we cannot completely prevent everything, but I think that it makes both the cows and the people stronger."

Reporter: "I think that on a remote island like Kuroshima, the shipping costs for ordering feed, additives, and necessary tools are quite high. Are you doing anything to reduce these costs?"

Suzuki: "Yes, this is a big issue unique to remote islands. Especially when it comes to feed, it is absolutely necessary, so shipping costs are unavoidable. However, since it is costly to order additives and equipment individually, we use the production association to order them in bulk. We also consult with a feed store on Ishigaki Island and purchase them all at once for the entire livestock farming on the island to reduce the shipping costs as much as possible. Even things that are difficult to do individually can be solved by working together."

自然と向き合い、牛を守る

記者「現在の牛の状態を点数に例えると何点ぐらいだと思われますか？」

鈴木さん「そうですね、大体60点くらいかなと思います。理由としては、うちの牧場では先輩たちからいつも”良い牛は良い母牛から”と教えられてきたので、母牛のケアには自信があります。ただし、課題もいくつかあって、まだまだ改善の余地があるんですよね。その点を考慮して、60点といったところです。」


記者「60点と評価された理由の中で、今特に気を使っている部分はどこになりますか？」

鈴木さん「やっぱり気候が大きいですね。特に夏場は暑さが厳しいので、牛たちのストレスを減らす工夫をしています。木陰に牛を誘導したり、ビタミン剤を与えて免疫を高めるなど、体調管理には細心の注意を払っています。ただ、自然の力には勝てない部分もあるので、そこはなんとか工夫しながらやりくりしていますね。」


記者「今の課題を埋めていくためには、どのような改善が必要だとお考えですか？」

鈴木さん「一番大きな課題は牧草の量ですね。夏場に十分に取れた牧草を冬場に備えて保存する努力はしているんですが、それでも不足してしまうことがあります。黒島だけでは足りないので、石垣島の農家さんから購入したりしています。また、土地の問題も大きいです。未利用の土地があるのに所有者が不明だったりして、新たな牧草地として開拓できないんです。この辺りは行政のサポートがあれば進められるのかなと思っています。」


記者「なるほど。そんな中でも、鈴木さんが楽しみながら仕事を続けられる秘訣は何かありますか？」

鈴木さん「私の場合、ピンク色の道具を使うことがモチベーションアップにつながっています。ロープやバケツ、ブラシなど、できる限りピンク色のものを揃えてるんです。明るい色を見ると気分も上がりますし、単調な作業でも楽しくなりますよね。過酷な作業が多いので、自分の機嫌を自分で取る工夫が大切だと思っています。実はこの黒島に移住した理由も、毎日が旅行気分で過ごせる場所で働きたかったからなんです。」

Reporter: "If you were to rate the current condition of the cows, how would you rate them?"

Suzuki: "Well, I think it's about 60 points. The reason is that at our farm, our seniors have always taught us that 'good cows come from good mothers,' so we are confident in the care of the mother cows. However, there are still some issues and there is still room for improvement. Taking that into consideration, I would say 60 points."

Reporter: "Among the reasons for the 60 points, what part are you paying particular attention to right now?"

Suzuki: "I think the weather is a big factor. The heat is especially intense in the summer, so we try to reduce the stress of the cows. We pay close attention to their health, such as guiding them into the shade of trees and giving them vitamins to boost their immunity. However, there are some things we can't beat the power of nature, so we try to get by with our ingenuity."

Reporter: "What improvements do you think are needed to overcome the current challenges?"

Suzuki: "The biggest challenge is the amount of pasture. We try to store the pasture that we harvest in sufficient quantities in the summer for the winter, but sometimes there is still a shortage. Kuroshima alone is not enough, so We buy land from farmers on Ishigaki Island. Land is also a big problem. There is unused land, but the owner is unknown, so it cannot be developed into new pastureland. I think that with support from the government, we can move forward in this area.

Reporter: "I see. What is your secret to continuing to enjoy your work even in such a situation?"

Suzuki: "In my case, using pink tools helps to increase my motivation. I try to have as many pink things as possible, such as ropes, buckets, and brushes. Seeing bright colors lifts my spirits. It also makes monotonous work more enjoyable. There is a lot of tough work, so I think it's important to find ways to cheer yourself up. In fact, the reason I moved to Kuroshima was because I wanted to work in a place where I could feel like I was traveling every day. ”

黒島が教えてくれた、行動する力の大切さ

記者「師匠や目標にしている方はいらっしゃいますか？」

鈴木さん「はい、鹿児島県鹿屋市にいらっしゃる上別府美由紀さんを尊敬しています。美由紀さんはとてもパワフルで、牛に対する愛情が本当に深い方なんです。それだけでなく、人にも優しく、周りの人を大切にされる姿勢に惹かれました。私が牛飼いを始めたばかりの頃にSNSを通じて知り合い、思い切って連絡を取ったんです。それで約2週間、美由紀さんのところで研修をさせてもらいました。そこから交流が続いていて、牛を買わせてもらったこともあります。本当に素敵な方で、私の目標でもあります。」


記者「上別府さんのところでの研修の経験や学びについて、少し教えていただけますか？」

鈴木さん「研修中、特に印象的だったのは牛への愛情を惜しみなく注ぐ姿でした。美由紀さんは牛を単なる“家畜”ではなく、大事な命として扱っているんです。その姿勢を目の当たりにして、私も“牛に愛情を持つことが、良い牛を育てる基本なんだ”と強く感じました。また、仕事に全力で向き合う美由紀さんの姿に影響を受け、自分ももっと頑張らなきゃと背中を押されました。それ以来、牛を育てるだけでなく、仕事に対する姿勢そのものを見習うようにしています。」


記者「最後に鈴木さんの座右の銘を教えてください。」

鈴木さん「『思い立ったが吉日』です。私は元々、人見知りや場所見知りなところがあり、新しい環境や初対面の相手に対して臆病になってしまう性格でした。しかし、沖縄への移住という大胆な一歩を踏み出したことで、自分の殻を破り、恐れを乗り越えて行動することの大切さを実感するようになりました。やりたいことを思いついたらすぐ動くようにしてから、人生がどんどん楽しくなりました。牧場を自分で始めるというのも、思い切って動いた結果なんです。それまではいろんな牧場で従業員として働いていましたが、自分でも挑戦したいと思った瞬間に行動しました。そうすることで島の人たちからも協力を得られて、牧場を運営できるようになりました。」


記者「確かに『思い立ったが吉日』は鈴木さんの行動力を象徴する言葉ですね。その行動力が人生を大きく変えたんですね。」

鈴木さん「本当にそうですね。行動することで道が開けるのを何度も実感しました。もちろん、最初は不安もありましたし、人見知りな自分にできるのかと悩むこともありました。でも、実際に行動してみると、協力してくれる人が現れたり、新しい可能性が広がったりして、行動する楽しさを覚えました。行動することが周りを動かし、さらに良い循環を生むんだと思います。だから今でも『思い立ったが吉日』を信じて、これからもどんどん挑戦していきたいですね。」

Reporter: "Do you have a mentor or someone you look up to?"

Suzuki: "Yes, I respect Miyuki Kamibeppu from Kanoya City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Miyuki is very powerful and has a really deep love for cows. Not only that, she is also kind to people, and I was attracted to her attitude of valuing those around her. I met her through SNS when I had just started raising cows, and I took the plunge and contacted her. I trained at Miyuki's place for about two weeks. We have continued to keep in touch since then, and I even bought a cow from her. She is a really wonderful person, and she is my role model. ”

Reporter: “Could you tell us a bit about your training experience and what you learned at Kamibeppu-san’s?”

Suzuki: “What was particularly impressive during the training was the way she poured out her love for the cows. Miyuki-san treats cows not just as ‘livestock’, but as precious lives. Seeing that attitude, I also strongly felt that ‘having love for cows is the basis for raising good cows’. Also, I was influenced by Miyuki-san’s attitude of giving her all to her work, and it gave me the push I needed to work harder. Since then, I have tried to emulate her attitude towards work, not just raising cows.”

Reporter: “Finally, what is your motto, Suzuki-san?”

Suzuki: “It’s best to act on impulse. I’ve always been shy around people and places, and I was always timid in new environments and when meeting people for the first time. However, by taking the bold step of moving to Okinawa, I came to realize the importance of breaking out of my shell and overcoming fears to take action. Since I started to act immediately when I thought of something I wanted to do, I have noticed how my life has changed.” It became more and more fun. Starting my own ranch was the result of taking a bold step. Until then, I had worked as an employee at various ranches, but the moment I felt that I wanted to take on a new challenge, I took action. By doing so, I was able to get the support of the people on the island and was able to run the ranch. ”

Reporter: “Indeed, the phrase ‘the best day is when you think of it’ is a phrase that symbolizes Suzuki’s ability to take action. That ability to take action has greatly changed your life.”

Suzuki: “That’s true. I have realized many times that taking action opens up new paths. Of course, I was anxious at first, and I sometimes wondered if I, a shy person, could do it. But when I actually took action, people who were willing to help me appeared, new possibilities opened up, and I learned the joy of taking action. I think taking action moves those around you and creates an even more positive cycle. That’s why I still believe in ‘the best day is when you think of it’ and want to continue to take on new challenges.”

鈴木さんは道具に好きな色を取り入れることで、日々の作業を自ら楽しんでいます。特にピンクは、可愛らしさと明るさを兼ね備え、気持ちを前向きにしてくれるカラー。ピンクの頭絡やロープ、小物を使うことで、単調になりがちな作業も気分が上がり、モチベーション維持に繋げているそうです。

​Suzuki enjoys his daily work by incorporating his favorite colors into his tools. Pink in particular is a color that combines cuteness and brightness, and makes you feel positive. Using pink bridles, ropes, and accessories lifts the spirits even during what can often be monotonous work, helping to maintain motivation.
