内閣総理大臣賞への道

記者「藤山さんが全共の方で内閣総理大臣賞を受賞されたということですが、その経緯についてお話しいただけますか？」

藤山さん「畜産を始めて20年、初めて全共を知ったのは第10回長崎大会でした。地元の牛が出品されるということで、応援に行ったんです。長崎大会で鹿児島は惨敗を喫しましたが、その場での熱気と興奮を目の当たりにし、私もいつかあの場に立ちたいと思うようになりました。そこから、宮城全共に向けて、まずは鹿児島県の共進会を目指すことにしました。経験の浅かった私は、先輩農家の助言を頼りに学び続け、ついに出場権を獲得しました。」

記者「その過程でどのような努力をされましたか？」

藤山さん「努力は続けました。例えば、牛の飼育や管理の技術を学び、先輩方にアドバイスをもらいながら改良を重ねました。特に、牛の健康管理や栄養管理に力を入れました。地元の共進会では連覇を果たし、自信をつけました。全共への出場に向けては、3ヶ月前から引き運動や管理を徹底し、家族の協力も得ながら準備を進めました。結果として、鹿児島県の予選で2位となり補欠でしたが、その悔しさをバネにさらに努力を続けました。」


記者「内閣総理大臣賞を獲得した時の感想をお聞かせください。」

藤山さん「内閣総理大臣賞を獲得できた時は、感無量でした。涙が出るほど嬉しかったです。これまでの努力が実を結び、家族や先輩方の支えに感謝しました。地元の応援も力になり、皆さんの期待に応えることができて本当に良かったと思っています。この経験を通じて、畜産業に対する情熱と自信がさらに高まりました。」


記者「これからの目標について教えてください。」

藤山さん「今後も畜産業に尽力し続けることが目標です。次世代の農家たちにも、自分の経験や技術を伝え、共に成長していきたいと考えています。また、新しい挑戦として、さらに高い品質の牛を育てるために研究を続け、国際的な大会でも成果を上げたいと思っています。地元の農業の発展に貢献し、地域全体を盛り上げることが私の使命だと感じています。」

Reporter: "I heard that you received the Prime Minister's Award at the All Japan Cow Farming Fair. Can you tell us how that came about?"

Fujiyama: "I've been raising livestock for 20 years, and I first heard about the All Japan Cow Farming Fair at the 10th Nagasaki Fair. I went to support the local cows that were being exhibited. Kagoshima suffered a crushing defeat at the Nagasaki Fair, but seeing the enthusiasm and excitement there made me want to stand there someday. From there, I decided to aim for the Kagoshima Prefectural Cow Farming Fair first, in preparation for the Miyagi All Japan Cow Farming Fair. I was inexperienced, so I continued to learn with the advice of my senior farmers, and finally qualified to compete."

Reporter: "What efforts did you make during that process?"

Fujiyama: "I continued to make efforts. For example, I learned about cow breeding and management techniques, and made improvements while receiving advice from my seniors. I especially focused on managing the health and nutrition of my cows. I won consecutive championships at the local Cow Farming Fair, which gave me confidence. In preparation for the All Japan Cow Farming Fair, I thoroughly trained and managed my cows for three months before the Fair, and with the help of my family, I continued to prepare while doing my best. As a result, I placed second in the Kagoshima Prefecture preliminaries and was an alternate, but I used that disappointment as motivation to continue working hard. ”


Reporter: “How did you feel when you won the Prime Minister’s Award?”

Fujiyama: “When I won the Prime Minister’s Award, I was overwhelmed with emotion. I was so happy I cried. I was grateful that my efforts had paid off and that my family and seniors had supported me. I was also encouraged by the support of the local community, and I am really glad that I was able to meet everyone’s expectations. Through this experience, my passion and confidence in the livestock industry has increased even more.”


Reporter: “Please tell us about your future goals.”

Fujiyama: “My goal is to continue to devote myself to the livestock industry. I would like to pass on my experience and skills to the next generation of farmers and grow together with them. As a new challenge, I would like to continue my research to raise even higher quality cattle and achieve results in international competitions. I feel that my mission is to contribute to the development of local agriculture and liven up the entire region.”

家族と共に目指す栄冠への道

記者「牛の状態に点数をつけるなら、現在は何点ぐらいと見ていますか？」

藤山さん「今現在の点数は100点です。理由として、全共に出場した牛は特別な飼育法を施しますが、その後、元の飼育法に戻す際に体調を崩すことも多いんです。しかし、うちの牛は平均分娩間隔が350日前後を保ち、繁殖成績も良好です。形も崩れておらず、子牛たちも繁殖牛として地域で購入されています。つまり、健康状態が良好で、繁殖成績も高いまま維持していることが100点の理由です。」

記者「全体としての評価はいかがですか？」

藤山さん「全体としても高評価を得ています。牛の健康状態や繁殖成績は飼育者の努力と関係しています。私は50点と自己評価していますが、妻と母は100点です。彼女たちは牛の観察とケアを徹底しており、迅速な治療や適切な管理を行っています。牛の健康と繁殖は飼育者の努力の反映ですので、我が家では平均して80点といったところでしょうか。」


記者「その80点という評価にはどのような改善点があるのでしょうか？」

藤山さん「改善点としては、時間の制約が大きいです。受精業務で外出が多く、牛舎に入れない時間があるため、観察やケアが十分にできない時があります。人間は自分に甘いところがありますから、疲れた時や眠い時はどうしても手を抜いてしまうこともあります。その点で、妻と母は本当に素晴らしい仕事をしてくれています。彼女たちの努力のおかげで、牛たちも健康で良好な状態を保っています。」


記者「時間の使い方や観察のポイントについて教えてください。」

藤山さん「時間は非常に重要です。牛舎にいる時間が長ければ長いほど、牛の状態を細かく観察できます。例えば、反芻の様子をしっかり見て、食欲や健康状態をチェックします。また、目の輝きや寝床の整え方なども重要です。牛は人間のように感情や体調の変化を示しますので、そのサインを見逃さないことが大切です。」


記者「共進会に出す牛と通常の出荷牛の育て方の違いについて教えてください。」

藤山さん「共進会に出す牛は特別な育て方をします。見た目の美しさや健康状態を重視し、繁殖成績も高く保つようにします。出荷する牛は一般的に繁殖重視ですが、共進会に出す牛はその血統や体型も重要です。無理な飼育はせず、ストレスをかけないようにしながら、健康で強い牛を育てます。その結果、共進会に出す牛は繁殖成績も高く、出荷時にも高値がつくことが多いです。」

Reporter: "If you were to give a score to the condition of the cows, how many points would you give them at the moment?"

Fujiyama: "Currently, I'd give them a score of 100. The reason is that cows that compete in the All Japan Championships are raised in a special way, and they often become ill when they are returned to their original way of raising. However, our cows maintain an average calving interval of around 350 days, and their reproductive performance is good. They are in good shape, and their calves are purchased locally as breeding cows. In other words, they are in good health, and their reproductive performance has remained high, which is why I've given them a score of 100."


Reporter: "What is your overall assessment?"

Fujiyama: "Overall, It also received high marks. The health and reproductive performance of the cows are related to the efforts of the breeder. I rate myself at 50 points, but my wife and mother rate it at 100 points. They observe and care for the cows thoroughly, and provide prompt treatment and proper management. The health and reproduction of the cows reflect the efforts of the breeder, so I would say that on average in my household we are at 80 points. ”


Reporter: “What areas could be improved to get that 80 point rating?”

Fujiyama: “As for areas to improve, there are a lot of time constraints. I go out a lot for insemination work, and there are times when I can’t enter the cowshed, so there are times when I can’t observe or care for them properly. There are times when humans are too lenient with themselves, and when we are tired or sleepy, we can't help but slack off. In that respect, my wife and mother do a truly wonderful job. Thanks to their efforts, the cows are healthy and in good condition.


Reporter: "Please tell us how you use your time and what you observe."

Fujiyama: "Time is very important. The longer you spend in the cowshed, the more you can observe the condition of the cows in detail. For example, you can carefully observe how they ruminate, and check their appetite and health. Also, the sparkle in their eyes and how well their bedding is prepared are important. Just like humans, cattle show changes in their emotions and physical condition, so it's important not to miss these signs."

Reporter: "Please tell us about the differences in how cattle are raised for cattle to be exhibited at the fair and those to be shipped normally."

Fujiyama: "Cattle to be exhibited at the fair are raised in a special way. We place emphasis on their appearance and health, and try to maintain high reproductive performance. Cattle to be shipped generally focus on breeding, but for cattle to be exhibited at the fair, their lineage and physical shape are also important. We don't overdo it and try to avoid stress, so we raise healthy, strong cattle. As a result, cattle to be exhibited at the fair have high reproductive performance and often fetch high prices when shipped."

師匠たちから学んだ道「成功と失敗の捉え方」

記者「師匠や目標にしている方を教えていただけますか？」

藤山さん「私が牛飼いを始めてから関わった全ての人が師匠だと思っています。やってはいけないことをしている人も反面教師としての師匠です。その中でも特に影響を受けたのは、谷川裕次さんという方です。彼は国家公務員として働きながらも、朝晩必ず牛の世話をしていました。時間の使い方が非常に上手で、共進会でも多くのことを学ばせてもらいました。」

記者「谷川さんからは具体的にどのようなことを学びましたか？」

藤山さん「谷川さんは牛の飼育や管理の基本から、共進会での見せ方まで多くを教えてくれました。彼は自分の知識を惜しみなく共有してくれました。例えば、共進会に出る牛の選び方や管理方法など、全て教えてくれました。普通、競争相手に自分のノウハウを教えることは少ないですが、彼は違いました。彼の教えがあったからこそ、私も成長できたと思います。」


記者「谷川さんの教えで特に印象に残っていることはありますか？」

藤山さん「一番印象に残っているのは、時間の使い方です。公務員として忙しい中でも、牛の世話を怠らず、また地域活動にも積極的に参加していました。彼の姿を見て、時間の有効活用と牛に対する情熱を学びました。また、彼のアドバイスを受けて共進会に出場した際、結果が出た時の喜びも忘れられません。」


記者「最後に、藤山さんの座右の銘を教えてください。」

藤山さん「私の座右の銘は、『成功したら他人のおかげ、失敗したら自分のせい』です。この考え方は、全ての人から学び、感謝することの大切さを教えてくれました。多くの人から意見や助言をもらい、それを自分の中で消化して実践することが成功の鍵だと思っています。失敗した時は自分の責任と捉え、次に活かす努力を怠らないようにしています。」

Reporter: "Would you tell us about your mentor or role model?"

Fujiyama: "I consider everyone I've been involved with since I started raising cattle to be my mentor. Even people who do things they shouldn't do are my mentors because they are negative examples. Among them, the person who had the greatest influence on me was Yuji Tanigawa. Even though he worked as a national civil servant, he always took care of the cattle in the morning and evening. He was very good at using his time, and I learned a lot from him at the cattle show."


Reporter: "What specifically did you learn from Tanigawa?"

Fujiyama: "Tanigawa taught me a lot, from the basics of raising and managing cattle to how to show them at the cattle show. He shared his knowledge with me generously. For example, he taught me everything, such as how to select and manage cattle to enter in the cattle show. Normally, people don't share their know-how with their competitors, but he was different. It was because of his teachings that I was able to I think I was able to grow as a person. ”


Reporter: “Is there anything that Mr. Tanigawa taught you that made a lasting impression on you?”

Fujiyama: “The thing that made the biggest impression on me was how he used his time. Even though he was busy as a civil servant, he never neglected to take care of the cows and was also active in local activities. Watching him, I learned how to use time effectively and how to have a passion for cows. I will also never forget the joy I felt when I took his advice and participated in a competition and got good results.”

Reporter: “Finally, please tell us Mr. Fujiyama’s motto.”

Fujiyama: “My motto is, ‘If I succeed, it’s thanks to others, if I fail, it’s my own fault.’ This way of thinking taught me the importance of learning from and being grateful to everyone. I think the key to success is to get opinions and advice from many people, digest it, and put it into practice. When I fail, I take it as my own responsibility and make sure to make the most of it next time.”

藤山さんがオススメするアイテムは時間です。時間管理は牛の健康状態を細かく観察するために非常に重要です。牛舎にいる時間が長ければ長いほど、反芻の様子や食欲、健康状態をしっかりチェックできます。目の輝きや寝床の整え方など、牛の感情や体調の変化を示すサインを見逃さないためには時計を上手に活用することが大事だと話していました。

竹ぼうき

牛飼いにとって最も基本的で重要なことは、牛舎を清潔に保つことです。そして、そのために欠かせない道具が竹ぼうきです。竹ぼうきは、牛のご飯を集めたり、牛舎を清潔に保つための必須アイテムであると話していました。これを使うことで、牛たちがストレスを感じずに過ごせる環境を整えることができます。
