技術の粋を尽くす

記者「守川さんの技術的な部分でのこだわりについて教えてください。」

守川さん「そうですね。やはり繁殖の基本となる種付けの質を向上させることが一番のこだわりです。具体的には、良いタイミングでの種付けを確保するために、様々な技術を駆使しています。これは、牛の健康状態を見極め、適切な時期を選ぶことが重要であり、これによって繁殖成績を向上させることができます。」


記者「実際の今の成績について教えてください。」

守川さん「現在の成績は、私個人としてはもう少し改善したいところですが、平均分娩感覚は大体13か月です。過去にはAI（人工授精）のみで管理していた時期があり、その頃は11.3か月で回していました。牛の年齢や健康状態も影響しますが、これらの成績は総じて良いと感じています。」


記者「種付けを改善するために使われた道具や工夫について教えてください。」

守川さん「2年前から超音波エコーを導入しました。これにより、牛の卵胞や子宮の状態を画像で確認できるようになり、種付けのタイミングをより正確に判断できるようになりました。エコーを使うことで、子宮内の問題や膣の汚れなども詳細に把握できるようになり、適切な治療や管理が可能になっています。毎年、受精師向けのエコー勉強会が開催されており、ブロックごとに九州では年1回程度行われています。私が参加したのは宮崎での勉強会で、九州全域や沖縄からも参加者が集まりました。沖縄の受精師たちはエコーの使用が一般的で、非常に上手でした。こうした勉強会を通じて技術を学び、実践に活かしています。」

Reporter: "Tell us about your technical commitments, Mr. Morikawa."

Morikawa: "Yes. My biggest commitment is to improve the quality of insemination, which is the basis of breeding. Specifically, I use a variety of techniques to ensure insemination at the right time. This is because it is important to assess the health of the cows and choose the right time, which improves breeding results."


Reporter: "Tell us about your actual current results."

Morikawa: "Personally, I would like to improve my current results a little more, but the average birth interval is about 13 months. In the past, I only used AI (artificial insemination), and at that time I was running it every 11.3 months. The age and health of the cows also affect the results, but I feel that these results are generally good."


Reporter: "Tell us about the tools and ideas you used to improve insemination."

Morikawa: "We introduced ultrasound two years ago. This allows us to check the condition of the cow's follicles and uterus with images, which allows us to more accurately determine the timing of insemination. Using ultrasound, we can get a detailed understanding of problems inside the uterus and vaginal dirt, which allows us to treat and manage them appropriately. Every year, an ultrasound study session for insemination specialists is held, and in Kyushu, each block holds about once a year. I attended the study session in Miyazaki, and participants came from all over Kyushu and Okinawa. Insemination specialists in Okinawa generally use ultrasound, and are very skilled at it. They learn techniques through these study sessions and put them to use in practice. ”

感情と技術の狭間で

記者「牛の状態に点数をつけるなら何点ですか？」

守川さん「90点くらいですね。牛自体には問題がないと感じています。繁殖成績も県内で上位に位置しており、畜産協会のコンサルでも毎年高評価を受けています。また、ここ最近は子牛も市場平均以上の価格で売ることができています。血統や健康状態の管理がうまくいっている証拠だと思います。」


記者「残りの10点を満たすためにはどうすればいいと考えていますか？」

守川さん「やはり、更新のタイミングの見極めが課題ですね。例えば、10回も種付けを試みた牛がいましたが、これは返済の関係で処分が遅れたケースです。更新の基準を明確にし、感情に流されずに判断できるようになれば、さらに良い成績が期待できると思います。」

記者「更新のタイミングを改善するために具体的にどのようなアクションを取りたいですか？」

守川さん「例えば、最初の1～2回は卵移植、その後はAIを試し、それでもダメなら更新するという方針を徹底することです。また、エコーや他の検査を活用して早期に問題を見つけ、迅速に対応することも考えています。感情に左右されず、より客観的な判断ができるようになることが目標です。」

Reporter: “How many points would you give to the condition of the cows?”

Morikawa: “About 90 points. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the cows themselves. Their breeding performance is also ranked high in the prefecture, and they receive high marks every year from the Livestock Association’s consulting. Also, recently, the calf has been growing. We are also able to sell our cattle at prices above the market average. I think this is proof that we are managing their bloodlines and health well. ”


Reporter: “What do you think we should do to achieve the remaining 10 points?”

Morikawa: “The challenge is to determine the timing of renewal. For example, we had a cow that we tried to breed 10 times, but this was a case where the disposal was delayed due to repayment. If we could clarify the criteria for renewal and make decisions without being swayed by emotions, I think we could expect even better results.”


Reporter: “What specific actions would you like to take to improve the timing of renewal? "

Morikawa: "For example, we will try egg transfers for the first one or two times, then try AI, and if that doesn't work, we will update the system. We are also considering using ultrasound and other tests to find problems early and respond quickly. Our goal is to be able to make more objective decisions without being swayed by emotions."

師の教えと熟慮断行

記者「師匠や目標にしている方について教えてください。」

守川さん「自分が目標にしているのは、この牛舎で以前働かれていた桑原さんです。彼は熊本県の畜産農協の肥育部会長も務め、周囲から非常に信頼されている方でした。私がこの仕事を始めた頃には、飼養管理について多くのことを教えていただきました。彼の知識と経験は、私にとって非常に貴重なものでした。」


記者「桑原さんの教えで特に印象に残っていることはありますか？」

守川さん「そうですね、血統について詳しく教えていただいたことが特に印象に残っています。私の父も牛を飼っていましたが、赤牛がメインだったため、黒牛の血統についてはほとんど知識がありませんでした。桑原さんのおかげで、そのあたりの知識を深めることができました。」


記者「守川さんの繁殖技術が評価されているのも、桑原さんの教えのおかげですか？」

守川さん「はい、そうですね。桑原さんの教えを基に、繁殖農家としての基礎を築くことができました。彼から学んだことが、今の私の技術や知識の基盤になっています。」


記者「座右の銘を教えてください。」

守川さん「子供の頃から父の牛舎に掲げられていた『熟慮断行』という言葉が座右の銘です。しっかり考えて、やるときはやるという意味だと理解しています。」

記者「『熟慮断行』が大事だと思う理由を教えてください。」

守川さん「そうですね、牛飼いを始めると決めたときは、本当に素早く行動しました。アルバイトをしていた時期がありましたが、その仕事がなくなったのをきっかけに父の手伝いを始めました。そして、1年後には牛飼いを始め、2年後には独立しました。すぐに行動するのが私の癖ですが、そこにしっかりとした深い考えをかけ合わせていきたい、そう思うからこの言葉が大事だと考えています。」

Reporter: "Tell us about your mentor and role models."

Morikawa: "My role model is Kuwabara, who used to work at this barn. He also served as chairman of the fattening division of the Kumamoto Prefecture Livestock Agricultural Cooperative and was very trusted by those around him. When I started this job, he taught me a lot about livestock management. His knowledge and experience were very valuable to me."


Reporter: "Is there anything that Kuwabara taught you that made a lasting impression on you?"

Morikawa: "Well, I was particularly impressed by the detailed information he gave me about bloodlines. My father also raised cattle, but he mainly raised red cattle, so he had little knowledge about the bloodlines of black cattle. Thanks to Kuwabara, I was able to deepen my knowledge in that area. "


Reporter: "Is it because of Kuwabara's teachings that Morikawa's breeding techniques are so highly regarded?"

Morikawa: "Yes, that's right. I was able to build the foundations of my career as a breeding farmer based on Kuwabara's teachings. What I learned from him is the foundation of my current skills and knowledge."


Reporter: "What is your motto?"

Morikawa: "My motto is the phrase 'Think carefully and act decisively,' which was posted in my father's cowshed since I was a child. I understand that it means thinking carefully and doing it when it's time to do it."


Reporter: "Why do you think 'think carefully and act decisively' is important?"

Morikawa: "Well, when I decided to start raising cattle, I acted really quickly. I had a part-time job for a while, but when I lost that job, I started helping my father. Then, a year later, I started raising cattle, and two years later I was independent. I have a habit of acting quickly, but I want to combine that with deep, solid thinking, so I think this phrase is important."

カーフハッチ

カーフハッチは個別の牛を隔離して育てるための設備です。高圧洗浄や消毒が可能で、病気の蔓延を防ぎます。その結果、牛の健康が向上し、増体も良好です。ただし、哺育に手間がかかり、ミルク製造機などの追加設備が必要になることもあるそうです。

Calf hutches are facilities for isolating and raising individual cows. They can be high-pressure washed and disinfected to prevent the spread of disease. As a result, the cows' health improves and they gain weight well. However, it is said that raising them requires a lot of effort and additional equipment such as milk production machines may be required.
