豚の声を聞けー行動学が支える命の現場ー

記者「宮井さんの牧場では、どんなこだわりを持って豚を飼育されているのでしょうか？」

宮井さん「うちは、日本SPF豚協会の厳しい基準を元に、豚がストレスなく快適に過ごせる環境づくりを意識しています。豚にとって“幸せ”な空間とは何かを常に考え、空気や温度、音といった細かな部分まで気を配りながら、健康に育てられるよう努めています。」


記者「日本SPF豚協会の基準が厳しいと聞いていますが、具体的にはどんなルールがあるのでしょうか？」

宮井さん「まず、作業者は必ずシャワーを浴び、専用の服に着替えてから豚舎に入ります。持ち込む物にも制限があり、お弁当一つでも殺菌してから持ち込みます。また豚に重篤な疾患をもたらす病気の一つにトキソプラズマがあります。犬や猫といった身近な動物が感染源になる可能性もあり私生活にも気を使う必要があります。」


記者「全国でも数が少ないと聞くSPF認定農場ですが、宮井さんのところはどれくらい前から認定を受けているのですか？」

宮井さん「協会が設立された当初から、連続で認定を受け続けており、今では27回、28回と継続しています。全国でも連続取得はうちだけです。それだけ衛生や管理を徹底して、信頼されている証だと思っています。」


記者「宮井さんは大学時代から豚の行動学を学ばれていたそうですが、それが今の飼育にどう活かされているのでしょうか？」

宮井さん「学生時代から豚の栄養学や行動学を学び、営業職を経験する中で現場に知識をどう伝えるかも考えてきました。実際の飼育にその知識を応用し、豚の小さな変化を行動から読み取る力がついたと思います。今ではその経験が芳寿牧場の飼育方針や環境整備に活かされていますね。」


記者「豚はストレスに敏感と聞きますが、ストレス管理で気をつけている点はありますか？」

宮井さん「豚は非常に繊細で、ストレスを感じると“ワロイング”と呼ばれる行動を見せます。これは自分のおしっこなどを体に擦りつける行動で、暑さなどのストレスサインです。そうした行動を見たら、扇風機を回したりミストをかけたりして環境を整えます。常に豚の様子を観察して快適に過ごせるようにしています。」


記者「豚同士の喧嘩についても、悩んでいる農家さんが多いと聞きますが、どのように対策されていますか？」

宮井さん「喧嘩の原因は”ティートオーダー”「乳付き順位」の崩れや、“カニバリズム”と呼ばれる集団による弱者排除などがあります。別の群れの豚を一緒にすると順位争いで喧嘩になるため、うちは極力そういったストレスを生まないように工夫して飼育しています。行動をよく観察し、衝突が起きない環境づくりが大事です。」


記者「芳寿牧場さんでは母豚の連産回数が非常に多いと聞きましたが、その背景を教えてください。」

宮井さん「うちは創業者の考えを今も大事にしています。“ひねた豚”でも命を大切にし、手をかけて育てるという姿勢です。連産性を重視し、5産や6産で切り替えるのではなく、10産以上を目指して長く母豚を飼うのがうちのスタイル。中には13産まで頑張る母豚もいます。一頭一頭を大事にすることが、従業員のモチベーションにもつながっています。」

Reporter: "What kind of attention do you pay to raising pigs at Miyai's farm?"

Miyai: "We are conscious of creating an environment where pigs can live comfortably and without stress, based on the strict standards of the Japan SPF Swine Association. We are always thinking about what a "happy" space is for pigs, and we strive to raise them healthy while paying attention to small details such as air, temperature, and sound."


Reporter: "I heard that the Japan SPF Swine Association's standards are strict, but what are the specific rules?"

Miyai: "First of all, the workers always take a shower and change into special clothing before entering the pigpen. There are also restrictions on what can be brought in, and even a packed lunch must be sterilized before being brought in. Toxoplasmosis is also one of the diseases that can cause serious illness in pigs. Animals that are close to the owner, such as dogs and cats, can be a source of infection, so care must be taken with regard to personal life as well.


Reporter: "I've heard that there are only a few SPF-certified farms in the country, but how long has Miyai's been certified for?"

Miyai: "We've been continuously certified since the association was first established, and now we've had 27 and 28 consecutive certifications. We're the only farm in the country that has been certified continuously. That shows how thorough our hygiene and management are, and how trusted we are."


Reporter: "I heard that you have been studying pig behavior since your university days. How is that being utilized in your current breeding?"

Miyai: "I have been studying pig nutrition and behavior since my university days, and while working in sales, I have been thinking about how to convey that knowledge to the field. I think that I have been able to apply that knowledge to actual breeding, and to read small changes in pig behavior. Now, that experience is being utilized in the breeding policy and environmental maintenance at Yoshiju Farm."


Reporter: "I heard that pigs are sensitive to stress. Is there anything you pay attention to when managing stress?"

Miyai: "Pigs are very sensitive, and when they feel stressed, they will show a behavior called "whirling." This is the behavior of rubbing their own urine on their body, which is a sign of stress from heat, etc. If we see such behavior, we turn on the electric fan or spray mist to improve the environment. We always observe the pigs' condition and make sure they are comfortable. "


Reporter: "I hear that many farmers are also worried about fights between pigs, so how do you deal with them?"

Miyai: "The causes of fights include the breakdown of the "teet order" (milk ranking) and the group elimination of the weak, known as "cannibalism." If pigs from different groups are put together, they will fight over ranking, so we try to raise them in a way that avoids such stress as much as possible. It is important to observe their behavior carefully and create an environment where conflicts do not occur. "


Reporter: "I heard that Hoju Farm has a very high number of consecutive litters of sows. Can you tell me the background to that?"

Miyai: "We still value the founder's ideas. Even if the pigs are "twisted," we value their lives and raise them with care. We value consecutive litters, and instead of switching over after five or six litters, we aim to raise sows for a long time, aiming for 10 litters or more. Some sows even make it to 13 litters. Taking care of each and every pig also motivates our employees."

スーツを脱いで、豚と向き合う覚悟

記者「芳寿牧場の成り立ちについてお伺いします。どのような経緯で始まった牧場なんでしょうか？」

宮井さん「芳寿牧場は、現会長が生活のために立ち上げたのが始まりです。会長は昭和17年生まれで、お父さんが戦争で傷を負って働けない中、家族を養うために長男として責任を担い、果樹農家からスタートしたんですが、果物だけでは生活が厳しく、養豚に活路を見出したんです。その時から“命を育てて家族を支える”という想いで続けてきた牧場です。」


記者「宮井さんと芳寿牧場の関わりは、どんなところから始まったのでしょうか？」

宮井さん「私はもともと伊藤忠飼料の営業マンとして芳寿牧場に出入りしていました。その中で会長の人柄に惹かれていったんです。ある時には私の結婚式で親のスピーチ役をお願いしたほどで、仕事以上の関係になっていました。そんな中、会長から“後を継いでみないか”と声をかけてもらい、最初は出向という形で6年間現場を経験しました。その後2020年に社長として就任しました。」


記者「出向中にも印象深いエピソードがあったと伺いましたが、どんな出来事があったのでしょう？」

宮井さん「関東島原半島会という、島原半島出身の著名人が集まる会に参加した際、初代防衛大臣の久間章生さんとお話しする機会がありました。会長とも面識のあった方で、“あの会長の下で1年よくやったな”と声をかけていただいたんです。自分の行動じゃなく、会長のもとでやりきったことが評価される。それくらい厳しくも信頼されている方なんだと実感しました。」


記者「会長の人柄や牧場の魅力に惹かれたとのことですが、具体的にはどんな点に惹かれたのでしょうか？」

宮井さん「会長はとてもストイックで厳しい人ですが、自分が“この人は”と思った相手にはしっかりフォローをしてくれる人情味のある方です。芳寿豚の美味しさはもちろんですが、人としての深さに惹かれました。最終的には“この人となら命を預かる仕事ができる”と感じ、会社を辞めてここに来る決意をしました。」


記者「おすすめの道具やアイテムがあれば教えてください。」

宮井さん「うちでは『アシッドST』という短鎖脂肪酸の製品を使っています。子豚の下痢対策や体調不良時のケアに使っていて、ライトミネラルという吸着系の製品と混ぜて与えることで、より効果が発揮されます。単体だと匂いがきつくて食べないこともありますが、工夫して与えればしっかり食べてくれますし、豚たちの健康維持には欠かせない存在です。

Reporter: "I'd like to ask about the origins of Hoju Farm. How did it start? "

Miyai: "The current chairman established Yoshiju Farm to make a living. The chairman was born in 1942, and as the eldest son, he took on the responsibility of supporting his family as he was injured in the war and unable to work. He started out as a fruit farmer, but it was difficult to make a living from fruit alone, so he turned to pig farming. Since then, he has continued to run the farm with the desire to "nurture life and support his family."


Reporter: "How did Miyai's relationship with Yoshiju Farm begin?"

Miyai: "I originally frequented Yoshiju Farm as a salesman for Itochu Feed. During that time, I met the chairman, I was drawn to his work. At one point, I even asked him to give a speech for my parents at my wedding, and our relationship became more than just professional. Then, the chairman asked me if I would like to take over the company, and I was seconded to the company for six years. After that, I was appointed president in 2020.


Reporter: "I heard that there were some memorable episodes during your secondment. What happened?"

Miyai: "When I attended the Kanto Shimabara Peninsula Association, a gathering of notable people from the Shimabara Peninsula, I had the opportunity to talk with the first Minister of Defense, Akio Kuma. He was also acquainted with the chairman, and I remember thinking, "I want to work under that chairman." He told me, "You did a great job this year." It's not your own actions that are evaluated, but what you've accomplished under the chairman. I realized that he's a strict but trusted person."


Reporter: "You said you were attracted to the chairman's personality and the charm of the farm, but what specifically attracted you to him?"

Miyai: "The chairman is a very stoic and strict person, but he's also a kind person who will provide support to those he thinks are the right person. I was attracted not only to the deliciousness of the Houju pork, but also to his depth as a person. In the end, I felt that "I can work with this person, taking care of lives," so I quit my job. I decided to come here because of that."


Reporter: "Are there any tools or items you would recommend?"

Miyai: "We use a short-chain fatty acid product called Acid ST. We use it to treat piglets' diarrhea and to treat them when they are feeling unwell, and it is even more effective when mixed with an adsorption product called Light Minerals. If you give it to them by itself, the smell is too strong and they may not eat it, but if you give it to them in a creative way, they will eat it and it is essential for maintaining the health of the pigs."

“和”で動かす養豚現場ー元営業マンの挑戦ー

記者「ライトミネラルとの出会いについて教えてください。最初に知ったきっかけは何だったのでしょうか？」

宮井さん「もともとは伊藤忠飼料で南九州を担当していた頃、ライトミネラルの営業の方と出会ったのが始まりです。営業先の農家さんで試験的に使ってみたりして、商品としては認識していました。当時は病気の多い農場では目立った効果が見えづらかったため、本格的には使っていなかったのですが、北部九州に異動してから改めて使ってみようと思ったんです。」


記者「その後、芳寿牧場での使用を始めてからは、どんな効果を実感されましたか？」

宮井さん「はい、実際に使ってみて、子豚の下痢対策として非常に安定した効果を実感しました。従来は酸化亜鉛や炭酸亜鉛といった即効性のある薬剤を使っていたんですが、使いすぎると中毒や環境への残留の問題が出てくるんですよね。でもライトミネラルはそういうリスクがなく、予防的にも使えるので非常に重宝しています。」


記者「実際の使い方や与え方について、こだわりなどあれば教えてください。」

宮井さん「うちでは、ワイヤーメッシュ状のスノコの四辺に、ライトミネラルを盛って設置しています。こうすることで、豚が興味を持って食べに来るんです。自然と口にする機会が増えますし、行動学的にも落ち着いて採食できるようになるので、与え方にも工夫を凝らしています。」


記者「最後に、宮井さんの座右の銘を教えてください。」

宮井さん「『和をもって貴しとなす』ですね。私は外部から来た立場なので、従業員や地域の方々との関係には特に気を遣ってきました。営業時代は受け入れられていても、社長としての指示になると反発が出ることもあります。創業家との関係も含め、良好に継続できる距離感を大事にしながら、円滑に会社を運営していくことが大切だと感じています。」

Reporter: "Please tell us how you first encountered Light Minerals. How did you first hear about them? What was it?"

Miyai: "It all started when I met a salesperson for Light Minerals when I was in charge of Southern Kyushu at Itochu Feed. I had tried using it on a trial basis at a farm I was selling to, and I knew it was a product. At the time, I didn't use it seriously because it was hard to see any noticeable effects on farms with a lot of diseases, but after I was transferred to Northern Kyushu, I decided to try it again."


Reporter: "After that, what kind of effects did you notice after you started using it at Yoshiju Farm?"

Miyai: "Yes, I actually used it and realized that it was very effective in treating piglet diarrhea. Previously, we used fast-acting chemicals such as zinc oxide and zinc carbonate, but overuse can lead to problems with poisoning and residues in the environment. However, Light Minerals does not pose such risks and can be used preventatively, so we find it extremely useful.


Reporter: "Please tell us if you have any particular concerns about how to actually use it or how to give it to your pigs."

Miyai: "At home, we pile Light Minerals on all four sides of a wire mesh-like slatted floor. This way, the pigs are interested in it and come to eat it. It naturally increases the opportunities for them to eat it, and it also helps them to calm down behaviorally, so we put a lot of thought into how we give it to them. "


Reporter: "Finally, please tell us your motto."

Miyai: "'Harmony is the most important thing.' Since I came from outside the company, I have been particularly careful about my relationships with employees and the local community. Even if they accepted me when I was in sales, I sometimes get resistance when I give instructions as president. I feel it is important to run the company smoothly while valuing a good distance that allows us to continue to work well, including with the founding family."
