牧草哲学と師匠

ーー牛に与えるエサについてこだわりを教えて下さい。

牧草にはこだわっていますね。牧草の作り方が良くないと美味しくない牧草ができてしまいます。牧草には見分け方があって肥料が悪いと黒っぽい草になるんですが、いい肥料で育った草は南国の海のように青く透き通った色になります。夕日に当てるとすごく綺麗な淡い青色に見えるので、春は必ず見に行って今年の生育の良し悪しの判断をしています。

ーー渡邊さんが牧草の知識を学ぶ上で師匠としていた方はどなたですか？

ファームテックジャパンの東出社長です。東出社長は牛のこと、土のこと、堆肥のことについて大変勉強させていただきました。いい堆肥にはミミズができて悪いものには蛆が湧く、発酵してるのか腐ってるのか、そのことを深堀して教えていただいていました。

--Please tell us about the particularities you give to your cows when it comes to feed.

You are particular about pasture grass. If the pasture is not cultivated properly, it will not taste good. There is a way to tell the difference between pasture grass and fertilizer. If the fertilizer is bad, the grass will be black, but if it is grown with good fertilizer, it will be a clear blue color like a tropical sea. When it is exposed to the setting sun, it looks a beautiful pale blue, so I always go to see it in the spring to judge the growth of the grass this year.

--Who was your mentor when learning about pasture grass?

It was President Higashide of Farm Tech Japan. I learned a lot from President Higashide about cows, soil, and compost. He taught me in depth about things like good compost that produces earthworms and bad compost that produces maggots, and whether it is fermented or rotten.

努力と結果、そして「積み木理論」

ーー渡邊さんが畜産経営において考えている理念などあれば教えてください。

努力すれば結果が出るっていいますが、こんなの当たり前だと思っていて、それに加えて結果があるものに対して努力 しなくちゃいけないという考えはあります。結果が先を行ってるから努力しても努力しても追いつけないぐらいでなければいけないと20代の時に言われました。その当時は何を言ってるのかわからなかったのですが、ようやくその理屈がわかり始めたかなと思っています。つまりお客様の持つ次から次に湧き上がる需要を満たし続けるために絶え間ない供給を続けていくことが大事ということです。

ーー自分に厳しく努力をし続けることが大事なのですね。そのモチベーションを維持するための秘訣は何ですか？

目標を持つことです。1年間の目標を私の頭の中で考えて「これは絶対やり遂げる！」と決めて1日ずつ達成に向けたハードルを越えていくことが重要です。その際に他人と競争してはいけません。「あの人に勝つんだ」と努力して本当に勝った時にまた「次のあの人に勝つ！」と次々に目標を探すことになりキリがないです。なので自分の目標を自分で作って、「どうその目標をクリアするか？」を常に考えるようにしています。

ーー目標に向かって進む際に経営者として悩むことは多々あると思いますがその悩みとどう向き合っているか教えてください。

私の場合は必要なもの、不必要なものを「積み木理論」で組み立てて判断するようにしています。「これをするためにはこれが必要」というのを積み木のパーツで例えて詰んでいくのです。そうすることで「今何をしなければいけないか」が明確になるので無駄に悩むことがなくなります。また、物事を「点で見る」ことを「線で見る」ように変えていくことで見る世界が変わった経験もしました。「自分は朝早くから仕事してようやくここまできたのに、あの人はもっと先まで進んでる。なんて自分はできないやつなんだ」と思っていた時期もありました。ですが実はその人たちは私がやっていることをやっていなかったりと、そこに至るまでのプロセスが自分と大きく違っていたのです。その瞬間「点」だけではなく過程「線」に視点を変えることが悩みの解決に結びつくことがあるのだと実感しました。

ーーPlease tell us if you have any philosophy about livestock management.

They say that if you work hard, you will get results, but I think that's normal, and I also think that you have to work hard for things that have results. I was told in my 20s that because the results are ahead of you, you have to work so hard that you can't catch up no matter how hard you work. I didn't understand what they were saying at the time, but I think I'm finally starting to understand the logic. In other words, it's important to continue to supply continuously in order to continue to meet the ever-growing demands of customers.

ーーSo it's important to continue to work hard and be strict with yourself. What's the secret to maintaining that motivation?

It's important to have goals. It's important to think about my goals for the year in my head, decide "I'm going to do this!", and overcome the hurdles to achieve them one day at a time. When doing so, don't compete with others. If you work hard thinking "I'm going to beat that person," and when you really do win, you'll start looking for goals one after another, and it's endless. So I make my own goals and always think "How do I clear those goals?"


--As a manager, you probably have a lot of worries when moving towards your goals. Please tell us how you deal with those worries.

In my case, I use the "building block theory" to determine what is necessary and what is unnecessary. I compare "this is necessary to do this" to building blocks. By doing so, you can clearly see "what you need to do now" and avoid worrying unnecessarily. I also experienced a change in the way I see the world by changing from "seeing things as points" to "seeing them as lines." There was a time when I thought, "I've finally come this far by working from early in the morning, but that person has gone further. I'm such a failure." But in fact, those people weren't doing what I was doing, and the process of getting there was very different from mine. At that moment, I realized that changing my perspective from not just "points" to "lines" can sometimes lead to solving my worries.

人生哲学と妻の支え

ーー今から就農される若者に伝えたいことなどありますか？

私の持論で人生は3段跳びと似ていると思っています。10代、20代は助走期間で、ここで助走を頑張った人が30代でステップを跳べます。またこの30代でも失敗する人は出てしまうのですが、助走を最大限に生かして大きくステップを踏めたら40代でジャンプに繋がります。この40代で体制崩さず躍進できれば60代で着地できると思います。60代まで跳び続けることが必ずしもその人の幸せとは限りませんが若いうちにサボってしまうと30代のステップで跳べないので一生懸命助走してほしいです。

ーー最後に渡邊さんを影で支えているかおるさんの存在について教えてください。

そうですね。家内がいなかったらやはりここまで大きくはならなかったと思います。家のことも一人でやってくれています。最初はまだ子供も小さかったので牛のことは全て私一人でやっていたのですが一人ではだんだん手が回らなくなっていきました。それを見て家内が子牛を見てくれるようになりました。子牛が手から離れたのはすごく大きかったですね。経営をしていく中で社長にしかわからない悩みというのはありますがそこを一番理解してくれる唯一の存在が家内です。いつも感謝しています。

--Is there anything you would like to say to young people who are just starting out in farming?

I believe that life is like a triple jump. Your teens and twenties are the run-up period, and those who work hard on that run-up can take the next step in their thirties. Some people will fail in their thirties, but if you can make the most of your run-up and take a big step, you will be able to jump in your forties. If you can keep moving forward in your forties without losing your balance, I think you can land in your sixties. It doesn't necessarily mean that you will be happy to keep jumping until your sixties, but if you slack off when you're young, you won't be able to take the next step in your thirties, so I hope you will work hard to get there.

--Finally, please tell us about Kaoru, who supports you behind the scenes.

That's right. I don't think we would have gotten this big without my wife. She also does all the housework by herself. At first, my children were still small, so I was doing all the work with the cows by myself, but it gradually became too much for me to do it alone. Seeing that, my wife started looking after the calves for me. It was a big thing for me to be able to let go of the calf. There are worries that only the president of a business can understand, and my wife is the only person who understands those issues the most. I am always grateful to her.

What I felt most when talking with Watanabe was gratitude. I think he has been successful because he has worked hard while showing gratitude for everything, from his family, nature, cows, and even meeting his master. I think Watanabe's unique commitment is not simply to aiming for business success, but to having a heart of gratitude for all the elements involved. Through this interview, I strongly felt that this heart is what is important as a manager and as a person.

タンカー

写真にも納まりきれないスケールを持ち、周囲も「あの巨大なタンカーの会社」と言うほどのインパクトです。株式会社COLLECTのシンボルとなるほどのこのタンカーは30トンもの堆肥を積載できるそうです。堆肥作業が圧倒的に楽になったと話されていました。

Its scale is too large to even fit in a photograph, and it has such an impact that people in the area call it "that giant tanker company." This tanker, which has become the symbol of COLLECT Co., Ltd., can carry up to 30 tons of compost. They said that composting has become overwhelmingly easier.
