骨から皮膚まで、牛の選び方完全ガイド

記者「宮本牧場での修行を通じて、どのような知識や技術を得られましたか？」

田上さん「宮本牧場での修行は、本当に基礎から学ぶことができました。最初は牛の扱い方や機械の操作方法など、基本的なスキルを身につけることから始まりました。それから徐々に、飼料の混ぜ方、TMR（全混合飼料）の配合、さらには飼養管理や繁殖技術についても学び、実際に人工授精を行う機会もありました。」


記者「牛の選び方について詳しく教えてください。どのようなポイントに注目すればいいのですか？」

田上さん「牛を選ぶ際は、まず皮膚の質感が大切です。皮膚を引っ張ったときに、柔らかくて伸びる「シーツのような」皮膚を持つ牛と、硬くて伸びない「毛布のような」皮膚を持つ牛がいます。宮本さんからは、常にシーツのような柔らかい皮膚を持つ牛を選ぶようにと教わりました。この質感は触ることで判断でき、牛の健康状態や飼料の吸収率にも関連しています。」


記者「それ以外にも選び方のポイントはありますか？」

田上さん「はい、乳頭の形状も重要なチェックポイントです。小指のような形をした乳頭が理想的で、これは搾乳性にも影響を及ぼします。さらに、骨格に注目し、角が尖っているような、カクカクした骨格の牛を選ぶことが重要です。」


記者「腹がしっかりしているかどうかも選び方の一つとして挙げられていましたが、その見分け方はありますか？」

田上さん「腹がしっかりしているかどうかは、肋骨の開き具合や腹部の形状で判断します。例えば、前から見てリンゴのように肋骨が張っている牛は、飼料の食い込みが良い傾向があると言われています。反対に、洋梨のような形の牛は食い込みが悪いとされます。このように、見た目からも牛の健康状態や飼料の食い込みを判断することが大切です。」

Reporter: "What knowledge and skills did you gain through your training at Miyamoto Farm?"

​Tanoue: "My training at Miyamoto Farm really taught me from the very basics. I started by learning basic skills like how to handle cows and how to operate machines. Then I gradually learned how to mix feed, how to mix TMR (total mixed ration), and even how to manage and breed. I even had the opportunity to perform artificial insemination."


Reporter: "Please tell me more about how to choose cows. What should I look for?"

Tanoue: "When choosing cows, the first thing to consider is the texture of the skin. When you pull on the skin, there are cows with skin that is soft and stretchy, like a sheet, and cows with skin that is hard and doesn't stretch, like a blanket. Miyamoto taught me to always choose cows with skin that is soft like a sheet. This texture can be judged by touch and is also related to the cow's health and the rate at which the feed is absorbed. "


Reporter: "Any other points to consider when selecting cows?"

Tanoue: "Yes, the shape of the teats is also an important checkpoint. Ideally, teats should be pinky-shaped, as this also affects milking. It is also important to pay attention to the bone structure and select cows with sharp, angular bone structures."

Reporter: "You mentioned that one way to select cows is to see if their stomachs are firm. Is there a way to tell?"

Tanoue: "You can tell if a cow has a firm stomach by how open its ribs are and the shape of its abdomen. For example, cows with ribs that look like apples from the front are said to have good feed intake. On the other hand, cows that are pear-shaped are said to have poor feed intake. In this way, it is important to judge the health of the cow and its feed intake from its appearance."

カウコンフォートの改善を求めて

記者「自分の牛の状態に点数をつけるとしたら、どのように評価しますか？」

田上さん「カウコンフォートは比較的できていると思うので70点くらいだと考えています。その理由は、主に牛舎の環境や飼育方法にあると思います。強いて言うなら牛舎が狭く、牛たちがストレスを感じやすい環境にあるため、マイナスポイントとして30点引いています。また、一部の牛が若干痩せ気味で、エネルギー不足に陥っている点も改善が必要です。」


記者「その改善点について、具体的にどのような対策を考えていますか？」

田上さん「12月から飼料の調整を始めて、少しずつ状態が改善してきています。飼料の量を増やし、乾物摂取量も上げることで、牛たちの体調を良好に保とうとしています。これにより、牛たちのエネルギー不足を解消し、体がふっくらしてくることを目指しています。」


記者「配合飼料を増やすことに関連するリスクはありますか？」

田上さん「はい、配合飼料を急に増やすことにはリスクが伴います。特に足の健康や胃の酸性度、下痢のリスクが上がる可能性があります。ですから、増やす際には慎重に行い、牛たちの健康状態を細かく観察しながら調整しています。配合飼料を増やした結果、足の裏が赤くなったり、鼻水が出たりするサインを見逃さないようにしています。これらはアシドーシスの兆候であり、早期に対処することが重要です。」


記者「100点満点に向けてどのような取り組みが必要だと思いますか？」

田上さん「100点に近づけるためには、まずは飼料の質と量の最適化から始めています。そして、牛舎の環境改善を進めて、牛たちがストレスなく生活できる空間を作ることも重要です。これらの基本的な条件が整えば、牛たちの健康はもちろん、乳量や繁殖能力にも良い影響を与えることができると考えています。常に牛たちの状態を観察し、適切なケアを行うことが、目標達成には不可欠です。」

Reporter: "If you were to rate the condition of your cows, how would you rate them?"

Tanoue: "I think the cow comfort is relatively good, so I'd give it about 70 points. I think the reason for this is mainly the environment of the cowshed and the rearing method. If I had to say one thing, I would deduct 30 points as a negative point because the cowshed is small and the cows are in an environment where they are easily stressed. Also, some of the cows are a little thin and have an energy deficiency, which needs to be improved."


Reporter: "What specific measures are you considering to improve this point?"

Tanoue: "We started adjusting the feed in December, and the condition is gradually improving. We are trying to keep the cows in good physical condition by increasing the amount of feed and increasing the dry matter intake. This will eliminate the cows' energy deficiency and make them plumper."


Reporter: "Are there any risks associated with increasing the amount of compound feed?"

Tanoue: " Yes, there are risks in suddenly increasing the amount of compound feed. In particular, it can increase the risk of foot health, stomach acidity, and diarrhea. Therefore, we increase the amount carefully and adjust it while closely monitoring the health of the cows. We are careful not to overlook signs such as red soles of the feet and runny noses as a result of increasing the amount of compound feed. These are signs of acidosis, and it is important to deal with them early. ”

Reporter: “What efforts do you think are necessary to achieve a perfect score of 100 points?”

Tanoue: “To get closer to 100 points, we start by optimizing the quality and quantity of feed. It is also important to improve the environment of the cowshed and create a space where the cows can live without stress. We believe that if these basic conditions are in place, it will have a positive effect on the health of the cows, as well as milk production and reproductive ability. Constantly observing the condition of the cows and providing appropriate care is essential to achieving our goal.”

田上さん「宮本さんの最も印象的な点は、彼の牛に対する飼養管理の技術や、見る目の鋭さです。彼ほど牛のことを深く理解している人は他にいないと思います。また、宮本さんは新規の牧場経営者として、自分自身で牧場を立ち上げ、多くの成功を収めてきました。彼の経営技術や牛への深い理解は、私が学びたいと思う大きな理由です。宮本さんから学んだことは、私の経営のベースになっています。」

記者「座右の銘について教えてください。」

田上さん「私の座右の銘は、『STEP by STEP』です。これは、ゆっくりでもいいので一歩一歩前進し続けようという意味です。しかし、同時に停滞を許さない、現状維持は後退だという強い意志を持っています。農業の現状は厳しいものがありますが、その中でいかに自分の牧場を成長させ、収入を上げていけるか、常に挑戦する心が大切です。失敗を恐れず、挑戦し続けることで、失敗から学び、それが結果的に成功へとつながると信じています。」

Reporter: "Are there any items or tools you would recommend for farm management?"

Tanoue: "We especially value the rotary tiller and tractor on our farm. The rotary tiller is essential for plowing the compost bin twice a day. This promotes fermentation and uses heat to kill pathogens. It also helps keep the cows' bedding fluffy, providing a stress-free environment for even older cows. This also helps prevent mastitis and lowers somatic cell counts, and is extremely effective in maintaining the health of the cows."


Reporter: "Tell me more about the respected Miyamoto-san. What is his personality like and why is he your goal? ”

Tanoue: “The most impressive thing about Miyamoto is his cattle breeding management technique and his keen eye. I don’t think there is anyone else who understands cattle as deeply as he does. Miyamoto also started his own ranch as a new ranch owner and has had a lot of success. His management technique and deep understanding of cattle are the main reasons why I want to learn from him. What I learned from Miyamoto is the basis of my management.”

Reporter: “Please tell us your motto.”

Tanoue: “My motto is ‘STEP by STEP.’ This means that I should continue to move forward step by step, even if it’s slowly. However, at the same time, I have a strong will to not allow stagnation and to maintain the status quo as a setback. The current situation in agriculture is tough, but it is important to always have a challenging spirit to see how you can grow your ranch and increase your income. I believe that by not being afraid of failure and continuing to challenge yourself, you will learn from your failures and that this will ultimately lead to success.”
