自分の牛を、自分の手で

記者「堀田牧場さんの中で特にこだわっていることは何でしょうか？」  

堀田さん「うちは自家育成にこだわっています。昔は外部から牛を購入することもありましたが、導入コストがかかりますし、自分たちの環境に合った牛を育てるのが難しいこともあります。そこで、自分たちで牛を育てることで、餌や環境に適応した牛を育成できるようにしました。自分たちの土地や飼育スタイルに合った牛を作ることで、管理もしやすくなりますし、何より愛着も湧きます。牛の特徴や成長具合を把握できるのもメリットですね。」  


記者「導入牛と自家育成牛でそんなに飼育の難易度が変わるのですね。」  

堀田さん「環境や育て方によって変わる部分もありますね。決して導入が悪いわけではなく、それぞれのやり方にメリットがあります。ただ、うちは自家育成にこだわりたいという思いが強いです。自家育成なら、小さいころから牛の状態を把握し、餌も自給飼料を中心にすることで、コストの管理もしやすくなります。牛の市場価格の変動もありますし、安定した経営を考えると、自分たちで育てるのが一番いいと考えています。」  


記者「Instagramを見ると、地域のイベントに積極的に参加されているようですが、その理由を教えてください。」  

堀田さん「畜産業をしている以上、地域への貢献は大切だと考えています。ただ牛を育てるだけでなく、人とのつながりを大事にしたいという想いがあります。イベントに参加することで、消費者の方々に地元の食材の魅力を伝えられますし、地元の農家さんや飲食店の方々と協力することで、新しい取り組みが生まれることもあります。お誘いをいただいたときは、できるだけ積極的に参加するようにしています。」  


記者「技能実習生を受け入れていると聞きましたが、どんな方が働かれていますか？」  

堀田さん「うちでは現在フィリピンの実習生が働いています。彼らは動物を大切にする気持ちを持っていて、牛の扱いにも愛情をもって接してくれます。もちろん、牛を蹴ったり叩いたりすることのないように指導していますが、何よりも大事なのは自分自身が模範を示すことだと思っています。実習生に伝えたいことは、まず自分が実践して見せる。それが一番の教育だと考えています。」  


記者「言葉の壁について不安に思う方もいると思うのですが、その点はどう対応されていますか？」  

堀田さん「ある程度フィリピンの日本語学校で勉強してくるので、多少は言葉は通じます。それでも言葉の壁はゼロではないので、携帯の翻訳アプリを使ったり、できるだけ簡単な言葉で伝えたりしています。今後は作業手順を紙に書いて貼るなど、誰でも分かる仕組みを作っていきたいですね。」

Reporter: "What is Horita Farm particularly particular about?"

Horita: "We are particular about raising our own cattle. In the past, we sometimes purchased cattle from outside, but it was costly to start with, and it was sometimes difficult to raise cattle that suited our environment. So by raising our own cattle, we were able to raise cattle that adapted to the feed and environment. By raising cattle that fit our land and breeding style, it is easier to manage them, and above all, you can grow attached to them. Another benefit is that you can understand the characteristics and growth of the cattle."

Reporter: "So the difficulty of raising cattle that differs so much between introduced cattle and self-raised cattle."

Horita: "There are some aspects that change depending on the environment and how you raise them. It's not that introducing cattle is bad, and each method has its own advantages. However, we have a strong desire to insist on raising our own cattle. With self-raising, you can understand the condition of the cattle from a young age, and by mainly using self-produced feed, it is easier to manage costs. There are fluctuations in the market price of cattle, and in terms of stable management, we think it is best to raise them ourselves."

Reporter: "Looking at your Instagram, it seems like you actively participate in local events. Can you tell us why?"

Horita: "As a livestock farmer, I think it's important to contribute to the community. I don't just want to raise cattle, I want to cherish connections with people. By participating in events, I can convey the appeal of local ingredients to consumers, and by working with local farmers and restaurants, new initiatives can be born. When I'm invited, I try to participate as actively as possible."

Reporter: "I heard that you accept technical trainees, but what kind of people work here?"

Horita: "We currently have trainees from the Philippines working for us. They have a strong desire to cherish animals, and they treat the cattle with love. Of course, we instruct them not to kick or hit the cattle, but I think the most important thing is to set an example myself. What I want to tell the trainees, I first show them by practicing it. I think that's the best education."

Reporter: "I think some people are worried about the language barrier. How do you deal with that? "

Horita: "I studied Japanese at a Japanese language school in the Philippines, so I can communicate to some extent. But the language barrier is not zero, so I use a translation app on my phone and try to communicate in as simple terms as possible. In the future, I'd like to create a system that anyone can understand, such as writing down the work procedures on paper and posting them up."

設備を味方に、理想の牛づくりへ

記者「堀田牧場さんの牛の状態に点数をつけるなら、何点くらいでしょうか？」  

堀田さん「60点ですね。まだまだ伸びしろがあるからです。現状に満足はしていません。牛たちの健康状態にはある程度自信がありますし、授精師さんからもエサの食いがいいという評価もいただいています。でも、もっといい牛を育てたいという気持ちがあるんです。個体の乳量や繁殖の成績も含めて、まだ改善の余地があると考えています。」  


記者「60点というのは、決して悪い点数ではないと思いますが、具体的にどこを改善したいと考えていますか？」  

堀田さん「課題はいくつかありますが、大きなところで言えば牛舎の環境ですね。ただ、新しい牛舎を建てるとなると、すぐには難しい。だから、今ある環境の中で、どうやったらベストを尽くせるかを考えています。技能実習生を採用したことで牛の管理がより細かくできるようになったのは大きな進歩ですね。発情の早期発見や、病気の兆候を見逃さないようにすることで、もっと良い牛を育てていけると思います。」  


記者「牛の管理をする上で、おすすめの道具やアイテムはありますか？」  

堀田さん「うちは防犯カメラを活用していますね。今から5年ほど前に導入しました。最初は防犯目的だったんですが、今では牛のお産管理にも役立っています。携帯と連携しているので、夜中でも牛舎の様子をリアルタイムで確認できるんです。例えば、『そろそろ産まれそうだな』と思ったら、ピンポイントで牛舎に向かえます。昔は1時間おきに様子を見に行っていましたが、今は必要なタイミングだけ行けばいいので、負担がかなり減りました。ちなみに、特別な畜産用カメラではなく、Amazonで購入した防犯カメラを使っています。8台で6万円くらいだったので、コストも抑えられました。月々契約のカメラサービスよりも手軽で、うちには十分ですね。」

Reporter: "If you were to give a score to the condition of the cows at Horita Farm, how many would you give them?"

Horita: "60 points. There is still room for improvement. I'm not satisfied with the current situation. I'm fairly confident about the health of the cows, and the insemination technicians have also said that they eat well. But I want to raise better cows. I think there is still room for improvement, including milk production and reproductive performance."

Reporter: "I don't think 60 points is a bad score, but what specifically do you want to improve?"

Horita: "There are a few issues, but the biggest one is the environment of the cowshed. However, it would be difficult to build a new cowshed right away. So we are thinking about how we can do our best within the current environment. Hiring technical trainees has allowed us to manage the cows more closely, which is a big step forward. By detecting heat early and making sure not to miss any signs of illness, I think we can raise better cows."

Reporter: "Are there any tools or items that you would recommend for managing the cows?"

Horita: We use security cameras. We introduced them about five years ago. At first, it was for security purposes, but now it helps us manage the births of our cows. It is connected to our mobile phones, so we can check the state of the cowshed in real time even at night. For example, if we think that the cow is about to give birth, we can head to the cowshed at that exact spot. In the past, we used to go to check on the cows every hour, but now we only need to go when necessary, so the burden has been greatly reduced. By the way, we do not use special livestock cameras, but security cameras purchased from Amazon. We were able to keep costs down, as we paid about 60,000 yen for eight cameras. It is easier than monthly camera contracts, and is enough for us.

支え合う若手畜産家たち

記者「堀田牧場さんには、師匠や目標にしている方はいらっしゃいますか？」  

堀田さん「楽酪農業のメンバー全員ですね。元々は福岡県久留米市の若手酪農家や和牛繁殖農家が集まって発足したグループです。SNSを中心に情報発信しながら、みんなで農業を盛り上げようという活動をしていますそのメンバーの中でいうとしたら、特に倉重ファームの三小田祐弥さんですね。彼は人を惹きつける力がすごいんです。信念を貫いて、みんなを引っ張っていくリーダーシップがある。『自分の利益よりも、畜産業全体を盛り上げたい』という想いが強くて、実際にいろんな活動をされています。」  


記者「具体的にどのような活動をされているのでしょう？」  

堀田さん「例えば、消費拡大運動ですね。久留米や近隣のイベントで農業祭りなどに参加し、酪農家として乳製品を提供したりしています。三小田さんは、みんなのために積極的に動いて、農業全体を盛り上げようとしているんです。」  


記者「自分の利益だけでなく、畜産業全体を考えて活動されているんですね。」  

堀田さん「そうですね。それに、将来的には農業代行や酪農ヘルパーの仕組みも作りたいと話しています。酪農家は高齢化が進んでいて、新しく始める人が少ない。そんな状況の中で、人手不足の農家を支える仕組みがあれば、畜産を続けやすくなる。そういうことを真剣に考えて、行動しているのがすごいですね。」  


記者「堀田牧場さんの座右の銘を教えてください。」  

堀田さん「『牛と人に感謝』ですね。牛がいるからこそ、自分たちは生きていける。そして、牛を育てるうえで関わる仲間や消費者がいるからこそ、牧場が成り立っている。畜産は一人でできるものじゃなくて、本当にみんなのおかげで成り立っている仕事なんです。だから、人とのつながりを大切にしたいし、感謝の気持ちを忘れずにいたいですね。」  


記者「最後に、今後の目標を教えてください。」  

堀田さん「個人的には乳牛と和牛繁殖の両立を安定させていくこと。そして、楽酪農業としては、みんなが喜ぶような活動を続けていきたいですね。楽々農業の理念は、『自分のためだけじゃなく、みんなのために』。それを形にするために、これからも仲間と一緒に動いていきます。」

Reporter: Do you have a mentor or someone you look up to at Horita Farm?

Horita: All the members of Raku Dairy Farm. The group was originally formed by young dairy farmers and Wagyu breeders from Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture. We are working to promote agriculture together, disseminating information mainly through SNS. Among the members, I would say Yuya Mikoda of Kurashige Farm in particular. He has a great ability to attract people. He has the leadership skills to lead everyone by sticking to his beliefs. He has a strong desire to "promote the livestock industry as a whole, rather than focusing on his own profits," and he is actually involved in various activities. "

Reporter: "What kind of activities are you doing specifically?"

Horita: "For example, we are campaigning to increase consumption. We participate in agricultural festivals in Kurume and other events in the neighborhood, and provide dairy products as a dairy farmer. Mikoda is proactively working for everyone and trying to liven up the agricultural industry as a whole."

Reporter: "So you're not just thinking about your own profits, but also the livestock industry as a whole."

Horita: "That's right. Also, he says that in the future he wants to create a system for agricultural agents and dairy helpers. Dairy farmers are aging, and there are not many new people starting out. In such a situation, if there was a system to support farmers who are short on manpower, it would be easier to continue livestock farming. It's amazing that he is thinking about such things so seriously and acting on them."

Reporter: "What is Horita Farm's motto?"

Horita: "Thank you to the cows and the people. We can survive because of the cows. And the farm exists because of the colleagues and consumers involved in raising the cows. Livestock farming is not something you can do alone, it's a job that really exists thanks to everyone. That's why I want to cherish the connections with people and never forget to be grateful."

Reporter: "Finally, what are your future goals?"

Horita: "Personally, I want to stabilize the balance between dairy cows and Wagyu breeding. And as for Rakuraku Farming, I want to continue activities that make everyone happy. The philosophy of Rakuraku Farming is 'Not just for myself, but for everyone.' I will continue to work with my colleagues to make that a reality."

Previously, we had to check every hour, but now we can respond pinpoint the problem by watching the camera footage, so we can manage it efficiently. The security cameras we purchased on Amazon are excellent value for money, costing about 60,000 yen for eight cameras. Even compared to cameras that require expensive monthly subscriptions, it performs well enough and supports ranch management.
