はじめに
一頭一頭の牛が健康であるためには、日々のケアが欠かせません。さらに、そのケアを担当するのは人間であり仲間です。この仲間たちがどのように連携し、どう情報交換と切磋琢磨を重ねているのか。仲間の存在というのがこの畜産という大変な仕事を頑張るモチベーションとなるのです。
この記事では、日常のルーティンワーク、暑熱対策、そして最も大切な「仲間」について紹介していきます。
Daily care is essential to keep each and every cow healthy. Furthermore, it is humans and their colleagues who are responsible for this care. How do these colleagues work together, exchange information, and improve themselves through friendly competition? The presence of colleagues is what motivates people to work hard at the difficult job of livestock farming.
In this article, we will introduce the daily routine work, heat countermeasures, and the most important thing: colleagues. 日常と牛たちの微細なシグナル
ーー中村さんは日常におけるルーティンワークではどのようなことに気を付けていますか？
牛たちの異変にいち早く気付くよう心がけています。たとえば、牛が首を地面につけて寝ている場合、何か異常が起きている可能性が高いです。さらに、耳垂れが起きていると、マイコプラズマ（中耳炎）の可能性ががあります。 また反芻をあまり行わない牛がいたら要注意ですね。夏場の暑い季節では暑熱によるストレスで反芻の回数が減る牛もいたりするので。反芻がうまく行われないとルーメン内の微生物の活動効率が下がりうまく栄養を摂ることができないのです。熱を測ったり、考えられることをやって解決しないようだったら獣医さんを呼んで対処しています。 こうしたルーティンワークは、牛たちに起きる数々の問題に対して適切な処置を行うために不可欠です。
--What do you pay attention to in your daily routine work, Nakamura-san?
I try to be the first to notice anything unusual about the cows. For example, if a cow sleeps with its neck on the ground, there's a good chance something is wrong. Furthermore, if the cow has runny ears, it could be mycoplasma (otitis media). Also, if some cows don't ruminate much, you should be careful. In the hot summer months, some cows ruminate less due to heat stress. If rumination isn't done properly, the activity of the microorganisms in the rumen decreases, and they can't get enough nutrition. I take their temperature, and if nothing works, I call a veterinarian to deal with it. This kind of routine work is essential to take appropriate measures against the many problems that occur in the cows. 暑熱対策〜ソーカー〜
ーー牛たちが暑さにどのように対処しているのか教えてもらえますか？
牛舎の暑熱対策は非常に重要で、うちではソーカーと呼ばれる装置を10年前から使っています。ソーカーとは首元に水をかけて体温を下げる機械のことですね。人間は肌が露出しているので水にぬれて風が当たると涼しく感じますが、牛は毛で覆われているため体温調節が難しいんです。 5月くらいから10月くらいまで、特に気温が高い時期には、このソーカーを使用しています。 一般に使われる細霧は使い方が難しく、季節やタイミングを見て使わないと、湿度が上がりすぎるなど逆効果になってしまうこともあります。その点、ソーカーはタイマー式で調整可能なのでそういった心配がありません。ですから、牛舎環境を良好に保ちながら、暑熱対策しています。
--Can you tell me how the cows deal with the heat?
Heat prevention measures are very important in the cowshed, and we have been using a device called a soaker for the past 10 years. A soaker is a machine that pours water around the neck to lower body temperature. Humans have exposed skin, so when they get wet and the wind hits them, they feel cool, but cows are covered in hair, so it is difficult for them to regulate their body temperature. We use this soaker from around May to around October, when the temperature is particularly high. The fine mist that is commonly used is difficult to use, and if it is not used according to the season and timing, it can have the opposite effect, such as raising the humidity too much. In that respect, the soaker can be adjusted with a timer, so there is no need to worry about that. So we are able to prevent heat while maintaining a good cowshed environment. 仲間の力と至福のひととき
ーー畜産経営において「仲間」とどのように協力しているのかお聞かせください。
畜産経営は、一人では困難な作業がたくさんあります。だからこそ、情報交換や切磋琢磨が欠かせません。私の住んでいるこの木上地区は仲がいいと周りから言われていて、牧草の収穫など大きな作業が終わるたびに、打ち上げがてらみんなで集まって飲んでいます。これが仲間との絆を深める大事な時間です。 仲間と一緒に働き、共に問題を解決していく過程が、この仕事のやりがいなのかなぁと思いますね。
--Please tell us how you cooperate with your "colleagues" in livestock management.
Livestock management involves a lot of tasks that are difficult to do alone. That's why exchanging information and working hard together are essential. People say that the Kikami area where I live is a friendly place, and every time we finish a big job, like harvesting grass, we all get together for a drink to celebrate. This is an important time to deepen the bonds with our colleagues. I think the process of working together with colleagues and solving problems together is what makes this job rewarding.

個々のスキルや知識はもちろん重要ですが、それを高め合い、集結させて初めて大きな力となります。中村さんが語る「幸せ」とは、仲間とともに過ごす時間や、大きな作業を終えた後の打ち上げでみんなで笑い合っている瞬間です。この取材では、そのような独特の絆と共同体の美学が垣間見れました。おそらくこれが、農家の方々がこの厳しい仕事を続ける原動力であり、私たちが美味しい牛乳や肉を食べられる秘訣なのだと思いました。
Individual skills and knowledge are of course important, but only when they are improved and brought together can they become a powerful force. The "happiness" that Nakamura talks about is the time spent with his colleagues and the moment when everyone laughs together at the celebration after completing a big task. In this interview, we were able to catch a glimpse of such unique bonds and the aesthetics of the community. I think this is probably what drives farmers to continue this hard work, and the secret to our ability to eat delicious milk and meat.

ソーカーはタイマー式の噴水装置のことで牛の暑熱対策に用いられます。温度センサーも付いており設定の切り替えも自動でできるため気温の状態に合わせて最適な暑熱対策が行えるのだそうです。
A soaker is a timer-operated water fountain device used to protect cows from heatstroke. It is equipped with a temperature sensor and can automatically switch settings, so it can provide optimal heatstroke protection according to the temperature.
