女性ならではの視点が生む温かなケア

記者「牛舎に入った際、掃除が徹底されている印象を受けました。スタッフは全員女性ということで、女性ならではの視点が生かされていると感じましたが、その点についてはいかがでしょうか？」

山本さん「そうですね、私たちの牧場は女性だけで運営していて、やはり細かいところに気づく面があるかもしれません。牛舎の隅々まで掃除したり、牛の体調や些細な変化に敏感になったりと、女性の特性が活かされているのかもしれませんね。ただ、特別意識しているわけではなく自然とそうなっている感じです。それでもまだ手が行き届いていない部分もあると思うので、さらに改善していきたいと思っています。」


記者「山本さんの牧場で特にこだわっているポイントや技術について教えていただけますか？」

山本さん「私たちの牧場では、役割分担をしっかりと決めています。例えば娘が繁殖と管理を担当し、お姉さんは堆肥の処理を担当しています。そして、バイトの子には掃除を徹底してもらっています。牛舎の清潔さは牛の健康に直結するので、特に意識して取り組んでいます。全員で協力して、各々が自分の役割に責任を持つことで牧場全体が円滑に回るようにしていますね。」

記者「他にも牧場運営でこだわっていることがあれば教えてください。」

山本さん「例えば搾乳の際には乳房を丁寧に拭きますが、さらに牛の背中まで拭いてあげるようにしています。この時、牛の体調や痩せ具合をチェックできるので、単なる作業以上の意味を持っています。牛も背中を拭いてもらうとリラックスできるようで、ストレス軽減にもつながっているんです。小さなことですが、こうした配慮が牛の健康維持に役立っていると思います。」


記者「女性のみの作業体制で、例えば牛が病気になったときの対応はどのようにされていますか？」

山本さん「そういった場合は、まず体温を測って異変があればすぐに獣医さんに連絡しています。私たちの判断で対処するのは限界があるので、プロの意見を仰ぐことを優先しています。牛の健康に関して間違った判断はできないので、不安なことはすべて獣医さんに相談し、慎重に対応しています。」

Reporter: "When I entered the cowshed, I got the impression that it was thoroughly cleaned. Since the staff are all women, I felt that the unique perspective of women was being utilized. What do you think about that?"

Yamamoto: "Yes, our farm is run by women only, so it may be that we notice the small details. We clean every corner of the cowshed, and we are sensitive to the health of the cows and other small changes, so perhaps our feminine characteristics are being utilized. However, it's not something that we are particularly conscious of, it just happens naturally. However, I still think that there are areas that are not being taken care of, so I would like to improve further. "


​Reporter: "Could you tell us about the points and techniques that you are particularly particular about at your farm?"

Yamamoto: "At our farm, we have clearly defined roles. For example, the daughter is in charge of breeding and management, and the older sister is in charge of manure processing. We also have our part-timers thoroughly clean. The cleanliness of the cowshed is directly related to the health of the cows, so we are particularly conscious of this. By working together and each person taking responsibility for their own role, we ensure that the entire farm runs smoothly."


Reporter: "Could you tell us anything else you pay special attention to when running your farm?"

Yamamoto: "For example, when milking, I carefully wipe the udders, but I also make sure to wipe the backs of the cows as well. This is more than just a chore, as it allows me to check the cows' physical condition and how thin they are. It seems that the cows also relax when their backs are wiped, which also helps reduce stress. It's a small thing, but I think these kinds of considerations help maintain the health of the cows."


Reporter: "When you're working with only women, how do you respond when a cow gets sick, for example? "

Yamamoto: "In those cases, we first take their temperature and immediately contact a veterinarian if there is anything unusual. There is a limit to what we can do on our own, so we prioritize seeking professional advice. We cannot make the wrong decision regarding the health of our cows, so we consult with a veterinarian about any concerns we have and respond carefully."

牛たちの穏やかさが証

記者「山本さんが飼われている牛の状態を点数にするとしたら、何点くらいでしょうか？」

山本さん「そうですね、今のところ55点くらいですかね。まだまだ改善の余地があると感じています。でも、牛たちはおとなしくて、人に優しい性格に育てられている点は評価できる部分だと思います。搾乳中に蹴ったりすることも少ないので、そういう面では安心して世話ができています。」


記者「大人しくて優しい牛に育てるために、どのようなことに気を配っているのですか？」

山本さん「そうですね、搾乳中に落ち着いているかどうかを観察しています。蹴らないでじっとしている子は『いい子だな』と感じます。新しく牧場に来た牛以外は、普段からビビらせないように優しく接しているつもりです。それで牛もリラックスできるのか、穏やかな性格に育ってくれていますね。」


記者「55点ということですが、あと45点を加えて100点にするには、どんな改善が必要だと思われますか？」

山本さん「そうですね、一番の課題は暑熱対策ですね。今年の夏も暑かったので、来年の夏に向けて対策を考えています。屋根の色を変えて、できるだけ温度が下がるよう工夫しようと思っています。また、牛の乳量も今は1日30キロほどですが、35キロくらいまで増やしたいと思っています。これができれば、年間の目標乳量である10,500キロに近づけるかと思います。」


記者「暑熱対策や乳量増加を実現するために、具体的にどのような工夫をされていますか？」

山本さん「暑熱対策としては、屋根の色を変更して遮光効果を高め、少しでも温度を下げる予定です。乳量を増やすためには、何よりもたくさんの牧草を食べてもらうことが大事です。牧草の量や質に気を配って、牛たちにしっかりと栄養を与えるよう心がけています。」


記者「牧場作業で役立つアイテムがあれば教えていただけますか？」

山本さん「チェーンブロックですね。1頭に1本ずつ取り付けていて、特に牛が座り込んでしまった時に、これで吊り上げて立たせることができます。私たちの牛舎は後ろ方向にしか動かせない構造なので、座り込んだ時に上げるにはチェーンブロックが必要不可欠です。力仕事が女性だけだと限界もあるので、こうした道具が日常的に役立っていますね。」

Reporter: "If you were to rate the condition of the cows you keep, how many points would you give them?"

Yamamoto: "Well, I'd say about 55 points at the moment. I feel there is still room for improvement. But I think it's commendable that the cows are docile and have been raised to be kind to people. They rarely kick during milking, so I can take care of them with peace of mind in that respect. "


Reporter: "What do you pay attention to in order to raise cows that are calm and gentle?"

Yamamoto: "Well, I observe whether they are calm during milking. I think that the ones that stay still and don't kick are 'good cows.' I try to treat them gently so as not to scare them, except for the cows that have just come to the farm. Maybe that helps the cows relax, because they have grown into gentle characters."


Reporter: "You said they got 55 points, but what improvements do you think are needed to get 45 more points to get 100 points?"

Yamamoto: "Yes, that's right The biggest challenge is how to deal with the heat. This summer was hot, so we're thinking about how to deal with it for next summer. We're thinking about changing the color of the roof and trying to lower the temperature as much as possible. Also, the cows' milk production is currently about 30 kg a day, but we'd like to increase it to about 35 kg. If we can do this, we think we'll get closer to our annual target milk production of 15,000 kg.


Reporter: "What specific measures are you taking to deal with the heat and increase milk production?"

Yamamoto: "As a measure against the heat, we plan to change the color of the roof to increase the shading effect and lower the temperature as much as possible. In order to increase milk production, it is important for the cows to eat a lot of grass. We pay attention to the quantity and quality of grass and try to give the cows plenty of nutrition. ”


Reporter: “Could you tell us about any items that are useful for farm work?”

Yamamoto: “It’s a chain block. We have one attached to each cow, and when a cow sits down, we can use it to lift it up and stand it up. Our cowshed is designed so that it can only move backwards, so we need a chain block to lift it up when it sits down. There are limitations when it’s only women who can do heavy work. So these tools are useful on a daily basis."

好きだからこそできること

記者「山本さんには、師匠や目標にしている方はいらっしゃいますか？」

山本さん「そうですね、一番の師匠は父です。7年前に亡くなってしまったんですが、父の背中を追いかけて、少しでも超えられるように頑張っているんです。父とは仲が良くて、家族内でも私は父派でしたね。今思うと、もっと多くのことを聞いておけば良かったと後悔することもありますが、その分、父が残してくれた牛たちや技術を守り、さらに発展させていきたいと思っています。」

記者「お父様を超えるために、具体的にどんな目標を立てているのでしょうか？」

山本さん「父が牧場を経営していた頃は、1日あたりの乳量が28キロ程度だったんです。でも、父が亡くなってから12,000キロを目指して改革を進めて、2年ほど前から達成できるようになりました。餌の内容や業者を見直したり、牛の頭数も増やしたりして、かなりの努力を重ねました。今では15,000キロを目指して挑戦中です。目標があると頑張れるので、いつかその目標を達成させてみせたいです。」


記者「その目標を達成するために、牧場の運営にはどんな工夫をされていますか？」

山本さん「今は餌の手間を減らすために種類を1種類に統一したり、手間のかかる部分を減らす工夫をしています。昔は自動給餌機も使っていましたが、今は人力でしっかりと手をかけて給餌しています。細やかな手入れと効率化を進めたことで、乳量の目標に近づいていると感じますし、父の頃よりもさらに良い結果が出せているのではと思います。」


記者「最後に、山本さんの座右の銘を教えていただけますか？」

山本さん「『動物が好き』という気持ちが、全ての原点です。実は高校までは牛舎に入ることも少なく、牧場を継ぐとは思っていませんでした。20歳の時、父が怪我をして会社員を辞めて牧場を継ぐことになったんですが、最初はそれほど好きだったわけでもなかったかもしれません。けれど、自分が母になってから、牛が子供を産む姿や育てる様子を見て、牛たちへの愛情が深まりました。今では心配でたまらない存在です。ヘルパーさんが来ていても、哺乳だけは必ず自分でやりたいくらいなんです。牛たちは裏切らない、私が注いだ愛情をそのまま返してくれると感じるので、この仕事を心から大切に思っています。」

Reporter: "Do you have a master or role model?"

Yamamoto: "When my father was running the farm, the milk yield per day was about 28 kg.However, after my father passed away, we started reforming our production with the aim of producing 12,000 kg, and about two years ago we started producing milk of 12,000 kg. Now you can achieve it. I've made a lot of effort by reviewing the content and suppliers and increasing the number of cows.I'm currently aiming for 15,000 kilos, so I'm hoping to reach that goal someday. I want to show you."

Reporter: "What specific goals have you set to surpass your father?"

Yamamoto: "When my father was running the farm, the daily milk production was about 700 kg. But after my father passed away, we made reforms with the aim of 1,200 kg, and we have been able to achieve this for about two years now. We have made considerable efforts, such as reviewing the type of feed and the supplier, and increasing the number of cows. Now we are challenging ourselves to reach 1,500 kg. Having a goal makes you work hard, so I would like to surpass my father's achievements someday."


Reporter: "What kind of ideas have you put into running the farm to achieve that goal?"

Yamamoto: "Nowadays, we have standardized the type of feed to one type to reduce the effort of feeding, and we are making efforts to reduce the labor-intensive parts. In the past, we used automatic feeders, but now we feed the cows by hand. It is a very careful and careful care. By improving efficiency, I feel that we are getting closer to our milk production target, and I think we are achieving even better results than my father's time.


Reporter: "Finally, could you tell us your motto, Mr. Yamamoto?"

Yamamoto: "The feeling that 'I love animals' is the origin of everything. In fact, I rarely went into the barn until high school, and I never thought I would take over the farm. When I was 20, my father got injured, so I quit my job and took over the farm, but I may not have liked it that much at first. However, after I became a mother, I saw the cows give birth and raise them, and my love for the cows deepened. Now I worry about them so much. Even if a helper comes, I always want to feed them myself. I feel that the cows never betray me, and they return the love I give them, so I truly cherish this job."
