酪農家牛舎は驚くほどきれいで、不思議と家畜臭が感じられず、森本さんに育てられた牛たちは毛づやがよく人懐っこい印象を受けました。
写真からも伝わってくるほど柔らかい雰囲気をお持ちのおふたりはどのような育て方をしているのでしょうか。森本さんの座右の銘は「愛」。牛が好きだから愛情をもって接するようにしているとのこと。今回は、そんな愛情あふれる森本夫妻にお話を伺いました。

The dairy farm's cowshed is surprisingly clean, and strangely there is no smell of livestock. The cows raised by Morimoto-san are shiny and friendly.
You can see this gentle aura just from the photos, but how do these couple raise their cows? Morimoto-san's motto is "love." He loves cows, so he tries to treat them with affection. We spoke to the loving Morimoto couple.

①ストレスなく健康に過ごせる環境づくり

こだわっていることは特にないですが、強いて言うなら「健康」なのだと思います。「病気にさせないこと」には気を付けています。
　病気にさせないために、まず「密飼い」をしないようにしています。牛も人間と同じで、狭いところに詰め込まれるとストレスを感じてしまい、よくわからない病気になって死んでしまうことがあるからです。また、経済面で見ても、頭数が多ければ多いほど良いというわけではなく、「密飼い」で20kgしか乳量が出ないより、適正量で30kg出たほうがいいですよね。それぐらい、畜産農家にとって「健康」に育てることはメリットがあるのです。
　　次に、餌に関しても強いこだわりがあるわけではありませんが、自分のところで育てた牧草をベースに鉄分やミネラル、ビタミンなどを適正量ブレンドして与えるようにしています。これも人間と同じで、過剰摂取してしまうと悪影響があるので、適正量を心がけています。
　最後に、牛舎の環境ですが、自分がきれいな状態を保ちたいというのもありますが、酪農を始めた当初から、機械が入れないような区画は毎日、手作業で掃除をするようにしています。少ない量を毎日掃除するほうが、作業をする人の負担を減らすことにもつながりますし、牛たちにとっても清潔でストレスが少ない環境になっていると思います。

I don't have any particular preferences, but if I had to say, it would be "health." I am careful to "prevent them from getting sick."

First of all, to prevent them from getting sick, I try not to "crowd house." Cows are like people, if they are crammed into a small space, they feel stressed and can develop unknown diseases and die. Also, from an economic standpoint, it is not necessarily the more the number of cows, but rather, it is better to have the right amount of milk, producing 30 kg, than to be "crowded" and only produce 20 kg. That is how beneficial it is for livestock farmers to raise their cows to be "healthy."

Secondly, I don't have any strong preferences when it comes to feed, but I try to give them an appropriate blend of iron, minerals, vitamins, etc., based on pasture grass that I have grown myself. Just like people, excessive intake can have adverse effects, so I try to give them the right amount.

Finally, as for the environment of the cowshed, I want to keep it clean, but since I started dairy farming, I have made it a rule to manually clean the areas that machines cannot enter every day. Cleaning a small amount every day reduces the burden on the people who do the cleaning, and I think it also creates a cleaner, less stressful environment for the cows.

②昨日との変化に気づく

これも病気にさせないということに繋がるのですが、牛たちに「目をみはらす」ようにしています。牛たちが人間の言葉を使って話してくれたら楽なのですが、言葉を話せるわけではないので、見ることに尽きますね。これは自分だけではなくて、一緒に働く人みんなで意識していることです。例えば、搾乳を担当している人は、「今日はこの牛が5kgしか出なかった」と報告をしてくれたり、掃除をしてくれている人が「この牛は下痢になっている」と気づいてくれたりします。こういったときに病気を疑い、すぐに対策をとるのです。
　また、発情がきているかを見抜くことも大事な仕事の一つです。牛にも個性があって、発情が分かりにくい牛もいるので、それぞれの牛に対して、昨日と変化があるかを目で見て確認するように心がけています。

This also helps to prevent the cows from getting sick, but I try to keep an eye on them. It would be easy if the cows could talk to me in human language, but they can't, so I have to watch. This is something that not only I but everyone who works with me is conscious of. For example, the person in charge of milking will report that "this cow only produced 5kg today," and the person cleaning will notice that "this cow has diarrhea." When this happens, we suspect illness and take immediate action. Another important part of my job is to tell if a cow is in heat. Cows have their own personalities, and some are hard to tell when they're in heat, so I try to visually check each cow to see if there have been any changes since yesterday.

③畜産のイメージを変えたい

畜産には「3K」と言われる言葉があります。３Kとは「汚い・きつい・臭い」。私が嫁いだ時もそのようなイメージでした。ある日、自分と同じような酪農家の奥さんが、とても綺麗な身なりをしていて、そのことに衝撃を受けました。その方からは一切３Kをイメージすることがなく、自分もこういう風にきれいでいようと心に決めました。酪農家の奥さんである自分がいつも綺麗な身なりをしていくことで、畜産のイメージを変えていきたいと考えています。

​また、畜産農家の中でも特に酪農家には、「酪友（ラクユウ）」と呼ばれる言葉があるほど、酪農家同士のつながりが強いです。このような繋がりがあることは良い伝統ですし、酪農家として、決して途絶えさせないようにしたいと思っています。

There is a term for livestock farming called the "3Ks." The 3Ks are "dirty, harsh, and smelly." That was the image I had when I got married. One day, I was shocked to see a wife of a dairy farmer, who was similar to me, dressed very neatly. She never made me think of the 3Ks, and I resolved to dress neatly like her. I, the wife of a dairy farmer, would like to change the image of livestock farming by always dressing neatly.

​Also, dairy farmers, especially livestock farmers, have such strong ties with each other that there is a term for them called "rakuyuu (dairy friends)." It is a good tradition to have such ties, and as a dairy farmer, I want to make sure that it never ends.

最後に、運営するうえで大事なことは？

仕事をするときには、怒らないようにしています。もちろん、従業員が危ないことをしていたら叱りますが、後から怒らなければよかったと後悔してしまうので。
いつもニコニコとしているほうが、相手にとっても自分にとっても気持ちがいいですからね。
育てる側が幸せでないと牛も健康に育たないと思います。
総合的な「愛」ですね。
ただ好きというだけではダメなのだと思いますが、やっぱり、「牛が好き」なのだろうと思います。

I try not to get angry when I'm working. Of course, I will scold my employees if they are doing something dangerous, but I end up regretting it later.
It makes both them and me feel better if I'm always smiling.
I don't think the cows will be healthy unless the people raising them are happy.

I don't think it's enough to just like them, but I think it's important to "love cows."
