自然の力を信じて

記者「堤田さんの牧場でのこだわりについてお聞かせいただきたいです。」

堤田さん「牧場のこだわりは、土壌分析と飼料分析を行うことです。土壌分析は、土の中にある成分を測定し、足りない成分を補う作業です。これにより、草の栄養価を高め、牛に最適な環境を作ります。土壌が豊かであれば、育つ草も栄養豊富になり、牛の健康や志向性が向上します。最終的に、病気の予防や治療にもつながるんですよ。」


記者「牛の健康管理にもつながるんですね。土からしか得られない成分もあるのでしょうか？」

堤田さん「そうですね。ビタミン剤や人工添加物では補えない繊維や、天然の栄養素があります。草から得られるエネルギーや栄養は、人工物とは異なり、自然の力を活かしたものです。これが牛の健康を支える重要な要素となります。」


記者「どのような草が牛にとって良いのですか？」

堤田さん「良い草とは、栄養価が高く、牛が好むものです。例えば、クローバーや短い新芽は栄養価が高く、牛の嗜好性も高いです。こうした草を提供することで、牛の健康と成長を促進します。」

記者「自然体での飼育にもこだわっていると聞きましたが、具体的にはどういった取り組みをしていますか？」

堤田さん「私たちの牧場では、できる限り薬や整腸剤を使わずに飼育しています。牛が自然の環境で、自身の免疫力で健康を維持できるようにしています。これにより、牛はその環境に適応し、より健康的に育ちます。」

Reporter: "I'd like to hear about the particularities you have at your ranch, Mr. Tsutsumida."

Tsutsumida: "The particularities of the ranch are soil and feed analysis. Soil analysis involves measuring the components in the soil and supplementing any that are lacking. This increases the nutritional value of the grass and creates the perfect environment for the cows. If the soil is rich, the grass that grows will be rich in nutrients, improving the health and motivation of the cows. Ultimately, it also leads to the prevention and treatment of diseases."


Reporter: "So it also leads to health management of the cows. Are there any components that can only be obtained from soil?"

Tsutsumida: "That's right. There is fiber and natural nutrients that cannot be obtained with vitamins or artificial additives. The energy and nutrients obtained from grass are different from those obtained from artificial sources, It utilizes the power of nature. This is an important factor in supporting the health of cows.


Reporter: "What kind of grass is good for cows?"

Tsutsumida: "Good grass is grass that is highly nutritious and that cows like. For example, clover and short shoots are highly nutritious and highly palatable to cows. Providing this kind of grass promotes the health and growth of cows."

Reporter: "I heard that you are also particular about raising cows in a natural environment. What specific efforts do you make?"

Tsutsumida: "At our farm, we raise cows without using medicines or intestinal regulators as much as possible. We allow the cows to maintain their health in a natural environment using their own immune system. This allows the cows to adapt to their environment and grow healthier."

草と水で育む牛たちの物語

記者「自分の牛に点数をつけるなら何点ですか？」

堤田さん「65点ですね。まず、病気になりにくい点です。特に分娩前後の体調管理がしっかりできています。健康状態が安定しているので、安心して育てることができるのが強みです。」

記者「残り35点の不足点はどこですか？」

堤田さん「足りない部分は、土壌分析を通じて改良中の土や牧草の品種ですね。牛の嗜好性がまだ十分に上がっていないので、飼料の改良が必要です。餌の食いつきが今一つなので、ここを改善したいです。」


記者「その不足を補うために具体的にどのようなアクションを取っていますか？」

堤田さん「土壌分析を行い、その土地に合った草を育てています。これにより、牛が好む栄養豊富な草を提供できるようにしています。」


記者「堤田さんの牧場で育てている草の種類について教えてください。」

堤田さん「白クローバー、赤クローバー、オーチャードグラス、ペレニアルライグラス、イタリアンライグラス、アルファルファです。それぞれ特徴があり、牛の好みや栄養価に応じて選んでいます。」


記者「それぞれの草の特徴について教えてください。」

堤田さん「白クローバーとアルファルファはマメ科でタンパク質が高く、土地に残りやすいです。オーチャードグラスは繁殖力が高く、生産性が良いです。ペレニアルライグラスは栄養価が高く、牛の嗜好性も高いです。イタリアンライグラスは生産性が高いですが、冬の寒さに弱いです。雪が積もると根が保護されますが、降らないと根が凍ってしまいます。」


記者「牧場で使用しているおすすめのアイテムはありますか？」

堤田さん「600リットルの大きな水槽です。放牧地に5つ設置していて、暑い時期でも牛がストレスなく水を飲めるようにしています。大きな水槽にすることで、牛同士の争いも減り、全員がしっかりと水を飲めるように工夫しています。」

Reporter: "If you were to give your cow a score, how many points would you give it?"

Tsutsumida: "65 points. First of all, they don't get sick easily. They are especially well-managed before and after calving. Their health is stable, so they can be raised with peace of mind, which is their strength."


Reporter: "What are the remaining 35 points that are lacking?"

Tsutsumida: "The areas that are lacking are the soil and grass varieties that we are improving through soil analysis. The cows' palatability has not yet improved sufficiently, so we need to improve the feed. The cows are not eating the feed very well, so we would like to improve that."


Reporter: "What specific actions are you taking to make up for that deficiency?"

Tsutsumida: "We conduct soil analysis and grow grass that is suitable for the land. This allows us to provide the cows with nutritious grass that they like."


Reporter: "Please tell us about the types of grass you grow on your farm."

Tsutsumida: "White clover, red clover, orchard grass, etc. White clover, perennial ryegrass, Italian ryegrass, and alfalfa. Each has its own characteristics, and we choose them according to the cows' preferences and nutritional value.


Reporter: "Please tell us about the characteristics of each grass."

Tsutsumida: "White clover and alfalfa are legumes, high in protein, and tend to remain on the land. Orchard grass is highly fertile and productive. Perennial ryegrass is highly nutritious and has a high preference among cows. Italian ryegrass is highly productive, but vulnerable to the cold in winter. When snow accumulates, the roots are protected, but if it does not snow, the roots will freeze."

Reporter: "Are there any recommended items that you use at the ranch?"

Tsutsumida: "A large 600-liter water tank. We have five of them installed in the pasture so that the cows can drink water without stress even in hot weather. By using large water tanks, there is less fighting between the cows, and we make sure that everyone can drink water properly."

何度でも立ち上がる

記者「師匠や目標にしている方を教えてください。」

堤田さん「自分が目標にしているのは、隣町に住んでいる萩原牧場の萩原さんです。萩原さんは、新規就農者や周りの農家に対してとても親身になって接してくれる方です。色々な情報を提供してくれたり、困ったときには相談に乗ってくれたりと、本当に頼りになる存在です。」


記者「萩原さんはおいくつぐらいの方ですか？」

堤田さん「50代後半ですね。幼少期から彼の牧場の牛の育て方を見てきました。彼のように牛を育てたいと思ったのが、私がこの道に進んだきっかけです。」


記者「萩原さんの牧場の運営方針を教えてください。」

堤田さん「萩原さんは自然と共に牛を育てることを重視していて、その考え方が私に大きな影響を与えました。自然の力を最大限に活かし、薬や整腸剤に頼らない育て方を実践しています。彼のように自然体で牛を育てる姿勢が、私の目標です。」


記者「最後に、座右の銘を教えてください。」

堤田さん「『百折不撓』です。何度失敗しても立ち上がることを意味します。どんな困難があっても、諦めずに挑戦し続ける姿勢を大切にしています。」


記者「この言葉との出会いはいつでしょうか。」

堤田さん「学生時代の漢字検定の勉強で出会いました。その時、四字熟語を調べる課題があって、この言葉を知りました。意味を知ったときに、とても心に響きました。新規就農したばかりの頃、20歳で始めた1年目は特に大変でした。周りの農家から否定的な言葉を受けたり、自分のやり方に自信が持てなくなったりしました。でも、この四字熟語を思い出して、何度でも立ち上がろうと思いました。」


記者「それを続けることで、何か変わったことはありましたか？」

堤田さん「最近になって、人の意見を柔軟に取り入れるようになりました。以前は自分のやりたいことだけを追い求めていましたが、今は周りの意見や情報を取り入れることで、より良い方向に進めるようになりました。これは、何度も立ち上がる経験を通して気づいたことです。」

Reporter: "Please tell us about your mentor or role model."

Tsutsumida: "My role model is Mr. Hagiwara of Hagiwara Farm, who lives in the next town over. Mr. Hagiwara is very kind to new farmers and other farmers around him. He provides various information and gives advice when you are in trouble, so he is a really reliable person."

Reporter: "How old is Mr. Hagiwara?"

Tsutsumida: "He is in his late 50s. I have been watching how he raises cattle on his farm since I was a child. I wanted to raise cattle like him, and that is what led me to this path."


Reporter: "Please tell us about Mr. Hagiwara's farm management policy."

Tsutsumida: "Mr. Hagiwara places importance on raising cattle in harmony with nature, and that way of thinking has had a big influence on me. He practices a way of raising cattle that makes the most of the power of nature and does not rely on medicine or intestinal regulators. My goal is to raise cattle in a natural way like him."


Reporter: "Finally, please tell us your motto."

Tsutsumida: "Never give up." It means to get back up no matter how many times you fail. No matter how difficult it is, you have to keep trying without giving up. ”


Reporter: “When did you first encounter this phrase?”

Tsutsumida: “I encountered it when I was studying for the Kanji Proficiency Test in my student days. At that time, I was given an assignment to look up four-character idioms, and that’s how I learned this phrase. When I learned its meaning, it really struck me. When I first started farming, I was 20 years old, and the first year was particularly difficult. I received negative comments from the farmers around me, and I lost confidence in my methods. But I remembered this four-character idiom, and I decided to get back up again and again.”


Reporter: “Has anything changed by continuing to do that?”

Tsutsumida: “Recently, I’ve become more flexible in accepting other people’s opinions. In the past, I only pursued what I wanted to do, but now I can move in a better direction by incorporating the opinions and information of those around me. This is something I realized through the experience of getting back up again and again.”
