①牛にはいいものを

― 就農のきっかけを教えてください！
　学生時代は野球に没頭していたため、就農は全く考えていませんでした。酪農業は祖父の代から続く家業ですし、高校卒業後は農業系の大学に進学したので、ゆくゆくは農業関係の仕事に就ければという想いはあったと思います。大きなきっかけは結婚ですかね。結婚を機に家業を継ぐという覚悟ができ、父にも伝えました。しかし、「今すぐにはさせられない」と言われ、焼肉屋で２年くらいアルバイトをしましたね。
　その後、うちの牧場で働き始めましたが、酪農の知識はゼロに近い状態でした。とにかく周りの酪農家の話を聞いて、父の仕事ぶりを見て学ぶといった感じでしたね。そのとき20歳だったので、新規就農して11年になります。
 
― 飼料や飼育に関してこだわりはありますか？
　今は特に、飼料やその他経費も高騰している厳しい状況ですが、牛には常にいいものをあげたいと思っています。なかでもデントコーンにはこだわっています。というのも、うちはデントコーンサイレージを多めに給与しているため、牛への影響力が大きいんです。その他の飼料とのバランスは重要ですが、自給飼料でまかなえる餌の割合が増えるとコスト削減になります。ありがたいことに合志市は他の地域と比較してデントコーンの発育に適した環境です。現在、3月収穫分（1期作）で10町、8月収穫分（2期作）で５町、4月後半収穫するイタリアンを5町ほど作っています。
 
― やはり年によって品質や収量は違うのでしょうか？
　台風などの天候に左右されるため、その年によって出来は変わりますが、一番重要なのは刈る時期だと思います。もちろん、土壌の成分分析や雑草に栄養を摂られないように除草剤をまくことも大切です。しかし、天候や発育を常に意識し、刈る時期、植える時期を適期に行うことが品質の向上に繋がると考えます。

--What made you decide to start farming?

When I was a student, I was absorbed in baseball, so I never thought about farming. Dairy farming has been my family business since my grandfather's generation, and I went to an agricultural university after graduating from high school, so I think I had hoped to work in agriculture in the future. I think the biggest trigger was getting married. When I got married, I decided to take over the family business, and I told my father about it. However, he said, "I can't do it right now," so I worked part-time at a yakiniku restaurant for about two years.

After that, I started working on our farm, but I had almost no knowledge of dairy farming. I just listened to the stories of the dairy farmers around me and learned by watching my father's work. I was 20 years old at the time, so it's been 11 years since I started farming.

-Do you have any particular preferences regarding feed or breeding?

These days, especially, the situation is tough with feed and other expenses rising, but I always want to give my cows good food. I'm particularly particular about dent corn. Because we feed a lot of dent corn silage, it has a big impact on the cows. While the balance with other feed is important, increasing the proportion of feed that can be self-produced will reduce costs. Thankfully, Koshi City has an environment that is more suitable for the growth of dent corn than other regions. Currently, we grow about 10 cho of dent corn harvested in March (first crop), 5 cho of dent corn harvested in August (second crop), and 5 cho of dent corn harvested in late April.


-Do the quality and yield vary from year to year?

The yield varies from year to year because it is affected by weather such as typhoons, but I think the most important thing is the time of harvest. Of course, it is important to analyze the soil composition and spray herbicides to prevent weeds from taking nutrients. However, I think that always being aware of the weather and growth, and harvesting and planting at the appropriate time will lead to improved quality.

②先を見据えた行動を

 
― お父様の代と比較して飼料の内容は変わっていますか？
　主な内容は一緒ですが、少しずつ変えています。餌の内容を任せてもらえるようになってから、自分のなかで“もっとこうしたい”という想いが強くなりました。父も口を出したいことがたくさんあったと思いますが、やりたいようにやらせてくれました。主となる部分はほとんど変えていませんが、細かい部分はらくのうマザーズの方にアドバイスをいただきながら飼料設計しています。飼料をコロコロ変えることはあまり良くありませんが、牛の状態とサイレージの分析結果をもとに日々改良を続けています。草の品質や餌の価格など、いろんな人から情報を聞き、先手先手で行動することが大切だと思います。
 
― 先見の明が重要ということですね…！
　それは本当に重要だと思います。そのためには酪農家の先輩や仲間、関連業者さんたちからの情報収集は怠りません。周りには同世代の酪農家も多いので情報交換もしやすく、切磋琢磨しあえる関係性です。この環境は本当に恵まれていると思いますし、自分にとって大きな存在ですね。
 
― 以前から伺いたかったのですが、松野さんのコミュニケーションのコツを知りたいです！
　なんでしょうか…自分ではよくわかりませんね（笑）強いて言えば、周りを見ることですかね。自分もまだまだですが、視野を広くすることで相手の気持ちを理解することができるのかなと思います。牛も同じですね。1日中牛舎にいることはできないので、せめて牛舎にいるときは牛を見ることを意識しています。酪農家は皆さんそうだと思いますが、牛舎内を歩いているだけで常に牛に目がいきます。一方で、オフのときは野球をしたり趣味に没頭したり、オンオフをしっかり切り替えることも大切だと思います。

- Has the content of the feed changed since your father's generation?

The main content is the same, but we are making small changes. Since I was entrusted with the content of the feed, I have had a strong desire to "do more in this way." I think my father also wanted to have a lot of say, but he let me do what I wanted. The main parts have hardly changed, but we design the feed with advice from the people at Rakunou Mothers for the finer details. It's not good to change the feed frequently, but we continue to improve it every day based on the condition of the cows and the results of silage analysis. I think it's important to listen to information from various people about things like grass quality and feed prices, and to act proactively.


- So foresight is important...!

I think that's really important. To do that, I don't neglect to collect information from senior dairy farmers, colleagues, and related businesses. There are many dairy farmers of the same generation around me, so it's easy to exchange information and we have a relationship where we can improve each other. I think I'm really blessed to have this environment, and it's a big presence for me.

-- I've been wanting to ask this for a while, but I'd like to know your tips for communication!

What is it... I'm not really sure myself (laughs) But if I had to say, I guess it would be to look around you. I still have a long way to go, but I think broadening your perspective can help you understand other people's feelings. It's the same with cows. I can't stay in the cowshed all day, so at least when I'm there, I make a conscious effort to look at the cows. I think all dairy farmers are like that, but just walking around the cowshed my eyes are always drawn to the cows. On the other hand, I think it's important to be able to properly switch between work and home, playing baseball or immersing yourself in your hobbies when you're off.

③常に高みを目指す

― 一昨年、代表に就任されて心境の変化はありましたか？
　特別変わらないですね。正直始めたばかりのときは何がなんだかわからないし、毎日同じことの繰り返しで何事もやらされている感覚でした。しかし、いつの間にか“俺が変えてやる”や“もっと良くしていきたい”という感情が芽生えていました。両親を追い越せという気持ちで、オンワード・ホルスタイン*¹という冠名にあるように常に向上心あるのみですね。今は情勢的にも厳しいですが、やれることをやっていかなければいけないと思います。

― 松野さんは共進会にも参加されていますよね？
　就農した当時、父が共進会に参加していたことがきっかけです。自分も共進会に牛を出し始めると、徐々に楽しさがわかるようになっていきました。自分にとっては酪農に対して熱を持つことができたきっかけの一つであったと思います。共進会との出会いが自分を変えてくれた気がしないでもないですね。最初はどんな牛がいい牛なのかもわからなかったので、同世代の仲間と一緒に全国の牧場や共進会、時には海外にも行き、いろんな牛を見ました。この経験は私の財産となっています。
 
― 印象に残っている大会はありますか？
　第34回熊本県乳牛共進会です。この熊本県大会でグランドチャンピオンを獲ることができ、北海道の全共に繋がりました。すごくプレッシャーがありましたが、自分の牛を北海道まで連れ行き、酪農王国の牛たちと並び、あの場に立てたことは本当にいい経験になりました。プレッシャーというか緊張…本当に緊張していましたね（笑）
両親に牧場をお願いできたことで、自分はいろんな場所でいろんな経験ができ、本当に勉強になりました。
 
― 野球で培った集中力もプラスになったのではないでしょうか？
　それもあるかもしれませんが、認めてもらいたい気持ちが大きかったかもしれません。両親が築いた牛群、基盤があったので始めた酪農ですが、認めてもらいたい気持ちや全国のトップレベルの人達に早く追いつきたい気持ちがあったのも確かです。共進会はいい交流の場でしたし、学んだことがたくさんあります。やっぱり共進会の存在は大きいですね。

- Has your mindset changed since you became the CEO two years ago?

Nothing has really changed. To be honest, when I first started, I didn't know what was going on, and I felt like I was being forced to do everything every day. But before I knew it, I started to feel like "I'm going to change things" and "I want to make things better." I want to surpass my parents, and just keep striving to improve, as the Onward Holstein*¹ brand name suggests. The situation is tough right now, but I think we have to do what we can.

- Mr. Matsuno, you also participate in the dairy fairs, right?

When I started farming, my father participated in the fairs. When I started to enter my cows in the fairs, I gradually began to understand the fun of it. I think that was one of the reasons I became passionate about dairy farming. I feel like my encounter with the fairs changed me. At first, I didn't know what kind of cows were good, so I went to farms and exhibitions all over the country with my peers, and sometimes even overseas, to see all kinds of cows. This experience has become a treasure to me.


- Is there any competition that left an impression on you?

The 34th Kumamoto Prefecture Dairy Cattle Exhibition. I was able to win the Grand Champion title at this Kumamoto Prefecture competition, which led to the All Japan Dairy Cattle Exhibition in Hokkaido. There was a lot of pressure, but it was a really good experience to take my cows to Hokkaido and stand there next to the cows of the dairy kingdom. It was more like pressure or tension...I was really nervous (laughs).

Being able to ask my parents to run the farm allowed me to have a lot of different experiences in different places, and it was a really good learning experience.

- Didn't the concentration you developed through baseball also help?

That may have been a factor, but I think I also had a strong desire to be recognized. I started dairy farming because of the herd and foundation my parents had built, but I also had a strong desire to be recognized and to catch up with the top people in the country. The exhibition was a good place to interact, and I learned a lot from it. The presence of the Kyoshinkai is definitely significant.

― 最後に今後の展望を教えてください！
　個体のレベルアップですね。今後はゲノム検査を活用しながら個体のレベルを上げ、牧場全体のレベルを上げていく必要があると思います。より高みを目指して頑張っていきたいと思います！

--Finally, please tell us about your future plans!
Leveling up the individuals. I think that in the future we will need to utilize genome testing to raise the level of individuals and the entire farm. I will continue to work hard and aim for even greater heights!
