常識を超える基本の力学

記者「今村さんの牧場では、自家育成を行っているとお聞きしました。その理由について詳しく教えていただけますか？」

今村さん「はい、自家育成を選んでいる理由は、自分の牧場に合った牛を作れるからですね。例えば、病気に強く、乳量も安定している牛を育てられる。自分で牛の特性を把握して改良できるので、より効率的な牧場運営が可能になります。また、他の方がやるような導入牛を買う方法もありますが、それだと初期費用は抑えられても、自分の理想の牛に育てるのは難しいんです。時間はかかりますが、自家育成には長期的なメリットがあります。」


記者「具体的には、今村さんが理想とする牛というのはどのような特徴がありますか？」

今村さん「そうですね、病気をしにくくて、餌効率が良く、小型から中型の牛が理想です。特に、うちの搾乳設備がパラレル方式なので、大型の牛は合わないんですよ。時代の流れもあって、最近は小型で高性能な牛が求められています。餌も少なくて済むし、乳量もしっかり出る。大型牛は食べる量が多いので、その分のコストがかかるので効率が悪いんです。」


記者「現在、1日平均45キロもの乳量が出ていると伺いましたが、それを維持する秘訣は何でしょう？」

今村さん「特別なことはしていないんです。当たり前のことを当たり前にやるだけです。牛が健康でいることが一番大切なので、基本的な管理を徹底しています。それに、就農当初から業界誌やセミナーで学んだことを実践し、自分で試行錯誤してきました。うまくいかないことも多かったですが、その経験が今に繋がっていますね。」


記者「コスト管理についても、特に餌代が重要と伺いました。その点で工夫されていることはありますか？」

今村さん「餌代はやはり一番大きな負担です。だから、コストを抑えるために安価な原料を探しつつ、品質も妥協しないようにしています。牧草は購入が6割、自給が4割の割合ですが、品質の良いものを選ばないと乳量や乳質に影響が出てしまいますから。さらに、牛の体調や乳量、乳質を見ながら餌を微調整していく。そこがコスト管理の鍵だと思っています。」

Reporter: "I heard that you raise your own cows at your farm. Could you tell me more about why?"

Imamura: "Yes, the reason I choose to raise my own cows is because I can breed cows that are resistant to disease and have stable milk production. I can understand and improve the characteristics of the cows myself, which allows for more efficient farm management. There is also the option of buying cows like other people do, but while that reduces the initial cost, it is difficult to raise the cows to your ideal size. It takes time, but there are long-term benefits to raising your own cows."

Reporter: "Specifically, what are the characteristics of your ideal cow?"

Imamura: "Well, I would like a cow that is resistant to disease, has good feed efficiency, and is small to medium-sized. In particular, our milking equipment is parallel, so large cows are not suitable. Due to the changing times, small, high-performance cows are in demand these days. They require less feed and produce a good amount of milk. Large cows eat a lot, so It's inefficient because it costs more to do that."

Reporter: "I heard that you're currently producing an average of 45 kg of milk per day. What's the secret to maintaining that?"

Imamura: "I'm not doing anything special. I just do the obvious things. The most important thing is that the cows are healthy, so I'm thorough with the basic management. Also, from the beginning of my farming career, I've put into practice what I learned from industry magazines and seminars, and I've been trying and failing on my own. There were many times when it didn't work out, but that experience has connected me to where I am now."

Reporter: "I heard that feed costs are especially important in cost management. Is there anything you've done in that regard?"

Imamura: "Feed costs are still the biggest burden. That's why I look for cheap ingredients to keep costs down, but I try not to compromise on quality. I buy 60% of the pasture and grow 40% myself, but if I don't choose high-quality grass, it will affect the amount and quality of the milk. I also fine-tune the feed while watching the cows' physical condition, milk volume, and milk quality. I think that's the key to cost management."

記者「今村さんの牧場の牛の状態に点数をつけるなら何点くらいになりますか？」

今村さん「そうですね、70点くらいでしょうか。ボディコンディションのばらつきが主な理由です。高泌乳を維持するために高エネルギー・高タンパクの飼料を与える必要がありますが、その影響で繁殖が遅れたり、泌乳後期の牛が太りやすくなったりします。これらは避けられない部分もありますが、繁殖を改善し、長期空胎牛を減らすことで、少しずつ理想の状態に近づけたいと考えています。」


記者「牛舎環境についても課題があると伺いましたが、どのような対策をされていますか？」

今村さん「暑熱対策が課題ですね。最近の気候変動で、牛舎内が非常に暑くなることがあります。建物自体の改築は難しいので、換気扇を増やしたり、屋根を二重構造にしたりしています。特に二重屋根は効果が高いです。コストはかかりますが、牛の快適性と生産性のためには重要な投資だと思っています。」


記者「おすすめの道具やアイテムはありますか？」

今村さん「『アソード』という天然ミネラル補給剤を使っています。主に子牛のミネラル補給用ですが、経産牛にも与えています。本来、経産牛には鉄分は不要だと考えていますが、アソードを止めると便がゆるくなるような気がして続けています。特に牛の体調を観察しながら導入した結果、便や牛の状態の変化を感じることができました。確実な効果はまだ分かりませんが、使用感は良いので継続しています。」


記者「アソードはどのように知りましたか？」

今村さん「熊本の幸鷹牧場さんの紹介です。特に栄養の吸収量が上がるため育成牛の堆肥量が減ると聞いて使い始めました。堆肥量が減っているのかは厳密に計ったわけではないので何とも言えませんが、牛の体調にはプラスになっている気がします。他の牧場でも評価が高い製品なので、継続して使っていくつもりです。」

Reporter: "If you were to rate the condition of the cows on your farm, how many points would you give them?"

Imamura: "Well, I'd say about 70 points. The main reason is the variation in body condition. To maintain high milk production, it is necessary to feed them high-energy, high-protein feed, but this can slow down reproduction and make cows in late lactation more likely to gain weight. Some of this is unavoidable, but by improving reproduction and reducing the number of cows that are open for long periods, we hope to gradually get closer to the ideal condition."

Reporter: "I heard there are also issues with the cowshed environment. What measures are you taking?"

Imamura: "The challenge is dealing with the heat. With recent climate change, it can get very hot inside the cowshed. It's difficult to renovate the building itself, so we're increasing the number of ventilation fans and making the roof a double structure. The double roof is particularly effective. It's costly, but it's an important investment for the comfort and productivity of the cows. I think it's the best way to do it."

Reporter: "Any tools or items you'd recommend?"

Imamura: "I use a natural mineral supplement called 'Asode'. It's mainly for calves, but I also give it to cows. I don't think cows need iron, but I continue to give it to them because I feel like their stool becomes looser when I stop using Asode. I started using it while observing the cows' physical condition, and I could feel a change in their stool and their condition. I'm not sure of the exact effect yet, but I'm continuing to use it because it feels good to use."

Reporter: "How did you find out about Asode?"

Imamura: "It was introduced to me by Koutaka Farm in Kumamoto. I started using it because I heard that it increases the amount of nutrient absorbed, and therefore reduces the amount of compost for growing cows. I haven't measured it precisely, so I can't say for sure if the amount of compost is decreasing, but I feel like it's a positive thing for the cows' physical condition. It's a product that's highly rated by other farms, so I plan to continue using it."

すべての人に幸せを

記者「師匠や目標にされている方はいらっしゃいますか？」

今村さん「鳥取大山の真山さんですね。視察で初めてお会いしたのが、就農して2～3年目くらいの頃でした。あのエリア全体がレベルの高い酪農をされているんですが、特に真山さんの細やかな牛の管理に驚かされました。牛ごとに必要なビタミンやミネラルを個別に追加したり、残餌をきっちり食べさせるためにイーストカルチャーを使ったりと、丁寧な仕事ぶりでした。」

記者「真山さんの酪農に感銘を受けた理由は何だったんでしょうか？」

今村さん「当時、うちは1頭あたり30～35キロしか搾れなかったんですが、真山さんの牧場では40キロ以上の乳量が当たり前でした。その違いを目の当たりにして、ここまで細かく管理しないとこの乳量は出せないのか、と強く思いましたね。ただ、その後、自分たちの方法でも試行錯誤しながら45キロの乳量を達成できたので、真山さんに感銘を受けつつも、自分なりのやり方を確立してきたという感覚です。」


記者「もう一人、北海道の上田さんも目標にされていると伺いましたが、どのような酪農をされている方ですか？」

今村さん「上田さんは平均乳量50キロ以上を搾られている、いわば常識外れの酪農家です。通常、乳量を増やすには乾物摂取量を増やす必要があると考えられていますが、上田さんはその真逆を行っています。『いかに少ない乾物摂取で乳量を搾るか』に挑戦されていて、飼料効率を極限まで高めるために改良を重ねています。」


記者「真逆のアプローチをされているんですね。その成果を生むための工夫とはどのようなものですか？」

今村さん「ロボット搾乳を活用し、乳頭の配置や血統改良にも非常にこだわられています。例えば、乳頭の位置がクロスしているとロボットが感知できないので、そうならないように計画的な交配をしているんです。このような細かい部分にまで気を配ることで、高い効率と生産性を実現されています。」


記者「牧場経営の方針を象徴する言葉として『BE HAPPY』を掲げていらっしゃいますが、この言葉にはどのような思いが込められていますか？」

今村さん「この言葉には、牧場に関わる全ての人と動物が幸せであるように、という思いを込めました。牛たちも、従業員も、業者さんも、みんなが満足できる環境を作ることが、長期的な成功につながると信じています。それに、牛は愛情をかけた分だけ必ず応えてくれるんです。その点で、この言葉が牧場経営の本質を表していると思います。」


記者「外国人技能実習生の方も多く働いているようですが、この言葉を英語で掲げたことと関係がありますか？」

今村さん「そうですね、実習生たちに分かりやすいようにというのもありますが、シンプルで誰にでも伝わる言葉にしたかったんです。牧場の中で全員が目指す方向性を共有できるようにと思っています。」


記者「『牛も家族』という姿勢がホームページにも表れていましたが、従業員や牛を家族として考えるようになったきっかけは何ですか？」

今村さん「特別なきっかけがあったというわけではありませんが、就農から20年以上の間に多くの失敗や経験を積んできた中で、自然とそう考えるようになりました。人も牛も、愛情を注ぐことで良い結果が返ってくる。それを実感する出来事がいくつもありましたね。」

Reporter: "Is there anyone you look up to or look up to?"

Imamura: "Mayama from Daisen, Tottori. I first met him on a visit when I had been farming for about 2-3 years. The entire area is a high-level dairy farm, but I was particularly impressed by Mayama's meticulous management of his cows. He individually adds the necessary vitamins and minerals to each cow, and uses yeast culture to ensure that the cows eat all the leftover feed. He does his job carefully."

Reporter: "What impressed you about Mayama's dairy farming?"

Imamura: "At the time, we could only milk 30-35 kg per cow, but at Mayama's farm, it was normal to produce more than 40 kg of milk. Seeing the difference, I strongly felt that you couldn't produce that much milk without such detailed management. However, after that, we were able to achieve 45 kg of milk with our own methods through trial and error, so while I was impressed by Mayama, I felt that I had established my own way of doing things. "

Reporter: "I heard that another dairy farmer, Ueda from Hokkaido, is also aiming for this. What kind of dairy farming does he do?"

Imamura: "Ueda is an unconventional dairy farmer, milking an average of over 50 kg of milk. It is generally believed that in order to increase milk production, it is necessary to increase dry matter intake, but Ueda is doing the exact opposite. He is challenging himself to "produce milk with as little dry matter intake as possible," and is making repeated improvements to maximize feed efficiency."

Reporter: "So you are taking the exact opposite approach. What kind of ingenuity has been used to achieve this result?"

Imamura: "Ueda uses robotic milking and is very particular about teat placement and bloodline improvement. For example, if the teats are crossed, the robot cannot detect them, so he does planned breeding to prevent this. By paying attention to such small details, he has achieved high efficiency and productivity."

Reporter: "You have adopted the phrase 'BE HAPPY' as a symbol of your farm management policy. What kind of thoughts do you have behind this phrase?"

Imamura: "In this phrase, I put my wish for all the people and animals involved in the farm to be happy. I believe that creating an environment in which the cows, employees, and vendors are all satisfied will lead to long-term success. Also, cows will always respond to the love you give them. In that sense, I think this phrase represents the essence of farm management. "

Reporter: "It seems that you have a lot of foreign technical intern trainees working here. Is there a connection with the fact that you put up this phrase in English?"

Imamura: "Yes, it's because we want the trainees to understand, but we also wanted the words to be simple and understandable to everyone. We want everyone on the farm to share the same direction."

Reporter: "Your attitude that 'cows are family' is also reflected on your website, but what made you start thinking of your employees and cows as family?"

Imamura: "There wasn't a particular trigger, but I naturally began to think that way after experiencing many failures and gaining experience over the 20 years since I started farming. For both people and cows, good results come from showing love. There were many events that made me realize this."

アソードは、牛の健康と飼育環境の改善をサポートする阿蘇の赤土由来の添加剤です。今村さんの牧場では子牛のミネラル・鉄分補給としても効果があり、天然由来の成分で鉄分を含む栄養を補います。経産牛では、一般的な飼料で十分とされる鉄分も、アソードを使用し続けることで便の状態が安定し、使用を中断すると牛の体調が崩れるため欠かすことができない添加剤であると話していました。

Asode is an additive derived from the red soil of Aso that helps improve the health of cows and their rearing environment. At Imamura's farm, it is also effective as a mineral and iron supplement for calves, supplementing nutrition including iron with naturally derived ingredients. For multiparous cows, the iron content of general feed is considered sufficient, but continued use of Asode stabilizes the condition of the stool, and stopping use of the additive causes the cow's physical condition to deteriorate, so it is an indispensable additive.
