はじめに
阿蘇の自然に囲まれた豊かな環境で牛を育てる山本牧場。その経営を支えるのは凄腕の酪農家、山本隼人さん。山本さんの働く牧場では、一頭当たりの搾乳量が平均を大きく超える驚異的な40㎏台を記録し、酪農業界でその名を轟かせています。話を伺ってみると、山本さんは気さくな人柄で、その中には牧場運営への熱い思いと、一貫したゆとりを持った運営スタイルが感じられます。この記事では山本さんの運営スタイルや取り組みについてご紹介します。
Yamamoto Farm raises cattle in the rich natural environment of Mt. Aso. The man behind the business is the accomplished dairy farmer, Hayato Yamamoto. At the farm where Yamamoto works, the milk yield per cow is an astonishing 40kg, far above average, making him a household name in the dairy industry. When we spoke, Yamamoto was a friendly person, and we could sense his passion for running the farm and his consistent, relaxed management style. In this article, we will introduce Yamamoto's management style and efforts.
牛への優しさ
ー山本さんの牧場の特徴やこだわりは何ですか？
私たちの牧場で重視しているのは、牛への最適な環境作りですね。健康面で言うなら、「アソード」というA飼料を使って、病気や下痢の予防に最大限に配慮しております。色々な飼料や添加剤を試してきた中で、牛たちが元気になり、食いつきよく食べるのでアソードを選びました。環境面では、牛舎内の清潔さにもこだわっています。牧場付近は牛の生活臭が漂うものですが、私たちの牧場はほとんど臭いません。 ー確かに場所によっては嫌な臭いがする農家さんも多いですが、山本さんの牧場は全く臭いませんね。 アソードにも臭いを吸着する作用がありますが、それに加えて隅々まで行き届いた日々の清掃があってこそだと思っています。堆肥場に行ってもほとんど臭いがしないので来場される方々にいつも驚かれています。
-What are the characteristics and particularities of Yamamoto's farm?
At our farm, we place great importance on creating the best environment for our cows. In terms of health, we use a type of feed called "Asode" to take maximum care to prevent illness and diarrhea. After trying various feeds and additives, we chose Asode because it makes our cows healthy and makes them eat well. In terms of the environment, we also pay attention to the cleanliness of the cowshed. The area around the farm is filled with the smell of cows living there, but our farm is almost odorless. -It's true that many farms have unpleasant odors in some places, but Yamamoto's farm has no odor at all. Asode also has the effect of absorbing odors, but I think that in addition to that, we also need to clean every corner every day. Visitors are always surprised that there is almost no odor even when they go to the compost site. 「遊び心」を持つこと
ー山本さんの牧場は業績を伸ばしているとお聞きしましたが具体的な実績など教えていただけますか？
一般的に乳牛の搾乳量は30kg程度と言われますが、うちでは1頭あたり40kg以上の搾乳を行っています。追い込み（※1）たくても追い込めないというのが酪農家の現状ですが、ストレスを与えないよう牛たちへ細かなケアを行うことで追い込むレベルを上げています。 ※1 追い込む：牛の健康状態を維持しながら乳量を最大化させること ーそのような実績を上げるために必要な考え方や姿勢はなんでしょうか？ 私が仕事において大切にしているのは、何より「遊び心」ですね。楽しみながらやれば、新しいことにもどんどん挑戦しやすくなるんですよ。この心構えこそが、私が常に新たな取り組みを始める原動力になっています。例えば、ウィンドレス牛舎の導入はその一つです。当時はまだあまり事例がなく、周囲から疑問の声を受けることもありましたが、「面白そうだ！これはうまくいく！」という気持ちで始めた結果、牛たちのストレスの軽減につながりました。 ー自分の「遊び心」をもって行動を起こしていくことが大事なのですね。 畜産業は大変な仕事だからこそその考え方が重要だと思います。だから、仕事以外でも趣味を楽しむ時間を設けるようにしています。それが、私の仕事への情熱を燃やし続け、新たな挑戦へと繋がっていくんです。
-I heard that Yamamoto-san's farm is doing well. Can you tell us about some of the specific results?
Generally, dairy cows produce about 30kg of milk, but we milk each cow more than 40kg. The reality for dairy farmers is that they can't push the cows as much as they want to, but we are pushing them to a higher level by providing detailed care to the cows so that they don't get stressed. *1 Push: Maximizing milk production while maintaining the health of the cows -What mindset and attitude do you need to achieve such results? What I value most in my work is a sense of playfulness. If you have fun while doing it, it's easier to try new things. This mindset is what drives me to always start new initiatives. For example, introducing a windowless barn is one example. At the time, there weren't many examples, and I was often asked questions by people around me, but I started with the feeling that "this looks interesting! This will work!", and it led to reducing the stress of the cows. -It's important to take action with your own "sense of playfulness." I think that mindset is important because livestock farming is hard work, so I try to make time for my hobbies outside of work. This keeps my passion for my work burning and leads to new challenges. 理想の経営とは
ー山本さんが理想とする畜産経営とはどのようなものですか？
理想的な畜産経営とは、何より「変化に対する恐怖を持たない」ことが大切だと私は思っています。今の畜産業は、社会の変化や技術の進歩により、その姿を常に変えています。かつては、「牛が好きだから」という理由だけで酪農を始めることができましたが、今はそうはいきません。そのような時代変化の中で私が最も大切にしているのは、「常に新しいことに挑戦する」という姿勢です。 自分自身が過去の概念に縛られることなく、新しい方法を取り入れて成功を収めてきた経験から言って、これが多くの畜産家にとって新たな指針になると確信しています。だからこそ、私の牧場ではこれからも新しいことにチャレンジし続けていくつもりです。
-What is your ideal livestock management, Mr. Yamamoto?
I think that the most important thing about ideal livestock management is to "not be afraid of change." Today's livestock industry is constantly changing due to social changes and technological advances. In the past, you could start a dairy farm just because you "love cows," but that's no longer the case. In these changing times, what I value most is the attitude of "always trying new things." Based on my own experience of adopting new methods and achieving success without being bound by past concepts, I am convinced that this will become a new guideline for many livestock farmers. That's why I intend to continue taking on new challenges at my farm.

At Yamamoto's farm, while striving to create a cow-friendly environment, I was impressed by his playful approach to his work. I believe that it is Yamamoto's unique efforts and strong beliefs that have enabled him to achieve sustainable milk production at his farm.

山本さんの牧場では「アソード」というA飼料を使用しています。牛の食いつきがよく病気になりにくいと効果を実感している、山本さんの愛用品なんだそうです。

ウィンドレス牛舎
ウィンドレス牛舎は舎内が暗いため牛たちにストレスを与えることなく元気に育つのだそうです。牛舎内は隅々まできれいに清掃されているため、ほとんど臭いがありませんでした。
The cows in the windowless barn are dark, so they grow up healthy and without stress. The barn is thoroughly cleaned, so there is almost no smell.
趣味
山本さんの独自の発想、そして何事にも挑戦する姿勢を生み出すのは「趣味」のおかげとおっしゃっています。
音楽に車にバイクに、様々な趣味を楽しむことで大変な畜産の仕事を乗り越えています。
