はじめに

美味しい牛乳は、牛の健康と飼育環境によって大きく左右される。この度、人吉の酪農家である谷川さんを取材しました。谷川さんは自家牧草の栽培や竹サイレージの導入、子牛のケアなど、独自の飼育方法で牛の健康を維持し、高品質な牛乳を生産しています。この記事では、「青春は牛と共に」という谷川さんの思いのもと行う飼育方法やこだわりについて紹介していきます。

Delicious milk depends largely on the health of the cows and the environment in which they are raised. We interviewed Tanigawa, a dairy farmer in Hitoyoshi. Tanigawa maintains the health of his cows through unique breeding methods, including cultivating his own pasture, using bamboo silage, and caring for his calves, and produces high-quality milk. In this article, we will introduce the breeding methods and attention to detail that Tanigawa employs, based on his belief that "youth is spent with cows."

酪農家の魅力的な給餌戦略

ーーまずは牛舎と飼料について、大切にしているポイントを教えていただけますか？

うちでは飼料については、自給飼料とオーツヘイ、そしてビールかす等を積極的に給与しています。特に、大和フロンティアさんが提供する竹サイレージは、臭いの問題を解決するために大変役立っています。竹サイレージの導入以降、周辺住民からのクレームも減り、地域との良好な関係を築いています。また、ビールかすは乳脂肪率の向上に貢献し、品質の高い牛乳を生産する基盤を提供しています。


ーー自家牧草についてもう少し詳しく教えていただけますか？

自家牧草の栽培において、私たちは環境への負荷を最小限に抑えることを心がけています。これは、経済的な観点だけでなく、持続可能な農業を実践するための取り組みでもあります。人工肥料を過度に使用することは、財政的な課題につながるだけでなく、周辺地域への悪影響も考慮しなければなりません。そのため、自分のところで出た堆肥を使って自家牧草の栽培をしています。

--First of all, could you tell us what you value about the cowshed and feed?

We actively feed our cows with self-produced feed, oat hay, and beer lees. In particular, the bamboo silage provided by Yamato Frontier has been very helpful in solving the odor problem. Since we started using bamboo silage, we have received fewer complaints from local residents and have built a good relationship with the local community. Beer lees also contribute to improving the milk fat percentage, providing a foundation for producing high-quality milk.

--Could you tell us more about your own pasture?

When cultivating our own pasture, we try to minimize the burden on the environment. This is not only from an economic perspective, but also as an effort to practice sustainable agriculture. Excessive use of artificial fertilizers not only leads to financial challenges, but also requires consideration of the negative impact on the surrounding area. For this reason, we cultivate our own pasture using compost produced at our own farm.

子牛への目配り・気配り・心配り

ーー子牛の成長に合わせた飼養方法について教えていただけますか？

生まれて7日間ほどは、子牛を自分たちの目の届く範囲に置いて、ホルダーでしっかり飲めるようになるまで細かく面倒を見るようにしています。子牛が十分な量の初乳を摂取できているか、下痢や肺炎などになっていないかなど。生まれたばかりの子牛はデリケートなため細心の注意を払っています。その後哺乳ロボットに移行した後も哺乳ロボットに対して恐怖や不信感を持たないようにサポートしながら切り替えていきます。


ーーしっかり自分で哺乳ができるまで特別にサポートしてあげるのですね。

そうですね。今はまだできないのですがいつかは哺乳ロボットの近くに個別飼育できるようなペンを作ってあげたいですね。子牛たちも私たち自身も安心して育てることができる牛舎にしていきたいです。

--Can you tell us about the rearing method according to the growth of the calves?

For about seven days after birth, we keep the calves within our sight and take good care of them until they can drink properly in the holder. We check whether the calves are getting enough colostrum, whether they have diarrhea or pneumonia, etc. Newborn calves are delicate, so we take great care. After that, even after they are switched to the feeding robot, we support them so that they do not become afraid or distrustful of the robot.

--So you provide special support until they can feed properly on their own.

That's right. It's not possible at the moment, but one day I'd like to build a pen where they can be raised individually near the feeding robot. I want to make this a barn where both the calves and ourselves can raise them with peace of mind.

手順の工夫が牧場の成功へ

ーー牧場の実績とそこに至るまでの努力について教えていただけますか？

​私たちの牧場は、搾乳手順の改善により、乳質が向上しました。以前の体細胞数は17万程度でしたが、2年間通った札幌の専門学校の八紘学園で学んだ知識のおかげで現在は10万を切る水準に改善されました。この改善により、牛乳の品質が向上し、消費者により美味しい牛乳を提供できるようになりました。ただし、乳脂肪率が下がってしまったため、この課題に対処する方法を模索中です。去年、県の乳質の良さを決める大会で優良賞を受賞し、それ以降も改善に努めています。これからもより質の高い牛乳を提供できるよう、努力を続けていきます。

--Could you tell us about the farm's achievements and the efforts that led to it?

​Our farm has improved the quality of its milk by improving its milking procedures. Previously, the somatic cell count was around 170,000, but thanks to the knowledge I gained at Hakko Gakuen, a vocational school in Sapporo where I attended for two years, it has now improved to a level of less than 100,000. This improvement has improved the quality of the milk and allowed us to provide more delicious milk to consumers. However, the milk fat percentage has decreased, so we are currently looking for ways to address this issue. Last year, we won an award for excellence at a competition to determine the best milk quality in the prefecture, and we have been working hard to improve since then. We will continue to work hard to provide higher quality milk in the future.

谷川さんの牧場を訪れて、私たちは改めて酪農家の青春と情熱を感じました。谷川さんは、牛たちを大切に思う気持ちと、より良い牛乳をつくりたいという想いが強く、そのこだわりが給餌戦略にも表れています。
竹サイレージの導入や自家牧草の栽培、子牛への手厚いケアなど、谷川さんの独自の取り組みは、酪農を青春のように楽しむ姿があってのものなのでしょう。これからも、谷川さんが「青春」の気持ちを持ってより美味しい牛乳を届けてくれるのが楽しみです。

Visiting Tanigawa's farm, we were reminded of the youth and passion of the dairy farmer. Tanigawa cares deeply for his cows and has a strong desire to produce better milk, and this commitment is also reflected in his feeding strategy.
Tanigawa's unique efforts, such as introducing bamboo silage, cultivating his own pasture, and providing thorough care for his calves, are likely the result of his enjoying dairy farming like a youth. We look forward to seeing Tanigawa continue to deliver even more delicious milk with that "youthful" spirit.
